Mathis for MVP?

Considering he has 11.5 sacks and has already tied the record for most sacks in a season. Imagine that its only halfway through the season and the first half was the hardest part of our schedule. Now we're entering the easy part of the schedule. Man he is going to kill this record.

What do you think??

What are you talking about? That's not close to the record.

Plus wouldn't you have to be the most valuable member of your own team before you could be considered most valuable in the league? There are good reasons why QBs dominate the MVP award.

The record is 22.5 sacks.

Personally I don't think Mathis will get the record. I think somewhere down the line he'll have a few more "San Diego goos eggs" where his pass rush is countered (by uncalled holding or good line play) and even his decent run defense looks bad. Still have high hopes that he'll get that record and don't really see a reason why he shouldn't. Just a gut feeling

Mathis isn't even the MVP of our own team -- Andrew Luck would win that award.

Don't get me wrong -- Mathis is playing great, and he definitely should be up there in the voting for DPOY, but as others have noted there is some solid D being played right now in KC and I think the edge would go to Tamba Hali if voting were today.

The other thing with having a defensive player win MVP is that there seems to be more 'specialists' on D now a days than ever before.  Mathis is doing a great job pressuring the QB, and he looked excellent vs. the run against Denver, but the way he was being used (over-pursuit of the QB) against SD led to some huge plays.  While Mathis is greatly improving as an overall LB since making the transition last year, I still think he is too one-dimensional as a pass-rusher to be considered for MVP.  Of course, getting sacks is very important, and should count huge for DPOY voting.

Offense is also seeing more 'specialists' (e.g., other than AP there are very few every-down, do-it-all RBs in the league any more -- there is value in rotations and having guys like Darren Sproles, Reggie Bush, Donnie Brown, etc. that can come in and have a few explosive plays here and there but probably would not be able to withstand the every down abuse).  For that reason, I think unless there is an RB that is the main focal point of an offense putting up outstanding numbers and changing game (e.g., AP putting up 2,000 yards on the ground when there are 8 stacked in the box every single play), quarterbacks should be the most-likely to win MVP awards, as they touch the ball every play, often times have to change plays at the line, and are ultimately in charge of distributing the ball and not being 'specialists'.  Unfortunately, stats need to be considered and that makes it extremely difficult for WR's to have valid shots at winning MVP -- Megatron's performance against Dallas was MVP-esque, because he put up amazing numbers and was facing combinations of double/triple coverage at times, but being double/triple teamed can really reduce stats.... I think there is an argument that could be made for a WR like that though, because by taking 2 or 3 defenders to focus on one WR, there will always be a mismatch to allow the offense to exploit another area of defense  -- of course, there are no measurable stats for this.... which, IMO, should benefit a QB's chance at winning MVP because it is often up to him to find these mismatches and exploit them.

Still, we have 9 games left -- let's just hope Mathis and the rest of our team stay healthy.  A whole lot can happen in 9 weeks in the NFL (heck, a whole lot can happen in 1 week to change the dynamic of a team or the chance of a player winning any individual awards).

First off, 11.5 is not the record. Second, strahan didn't wi mvp when he set the record

Mathis should be the guy to beat for DPOY, but all anyone talks about is either Watt, Hali and mainly Houston. It's crazy that Mathis isn't the headliner because he doesn't have a great line or even a decent pass rushing partner. Houston and Hali are both great but they compliment each other and have caused sacks for one another. Who does Mathis have?

Peyton would have to do something dramatic in the 2nd half to not win the MVP, though I think Brady being 6-2 with that team is more impressive. Stats don't always equate to "MVP", that's what offensive POY is for. What they are doing in New England is shocking with that roster.

That's what a good defense will do for you. New england is winning most of their games in spite of their offense.

Yeah good D, but there were a couple games like the NO game that was on Brady elevating and undrafted rookie to hero status.

He would have to be an all around type defensive player to even be seriously brought up in the discussion and he simply isn't, He is great at getting sacks and putting pressure on the QB but he is a liability against the run

I agree with you, but will say that he should get some DPOY love if he breaks the sack record... I think he has a very good shot to do it.. imagine how many 3rd and longs the Rams, Cardinals, and Jags will have in those games...

I agree...unless Mathis manages to get like 30 sacks and 20 forced fumbles.  And Peyton might still get it anyway.

Who was the last LB/D-line MVP..

Lawrence Taylor in the 80s?? Alan Page in the 60s?

Just saw on NFL Network that they were picking Tom Brady for MVP. The fans agreed.

How in the world could you even make that case at this point?

Seriously dude...have you seen his sweaters?

    • Only if Sheldon isn’t available.
    • Yeah, Ebukam almost looks clumsy next to Latu. He's just so fluid.
    • Did Hou actually get that much better? This really does remain to be seen. I am of the opinion that the signing of Diggs is a signing that has been made about 2 years too late. He won't be bad, but he isn't a top 10 WR in the NFL anymore. I wouldn't put him as any more dangerous that Pittman, so WR's are a push. We have the better RB, Mixon is great and all, but he is not JT. We have the better Oline, and it isn't even close. TE's are a push, we have a lot of upside, but until it is realised im very "meh" on our TEs. QB - I would argue that Stroud is probably more likely to regress to the mean in year 2 vs improve. That rookie season of his was a bit silly, and they had an easier schedule last season too. If he really does build on last year and get even better, then our entire discourse here is probably irrelevant as we will have another Mahomes level QB on our hands to deal with in the AFC and within the AFC South no less. So unless Richardson is also a Mahomes level talent in that scenario, we are done for anyways. To me, our success in this coming season comes down to 2 groups on this entire team. 1. The QB (because... duh) 2. Our DBs. If we even get average play from the DBs, I think this team has the ability to win the whole damned thing (supposing Richardson stays healthy and is what we all hope he is). I would also argue that Houston are paper thin. If they lose a OL starter, Mixon or even one of their starting WRs.... they have a very big drop off. And injuries happen in the NFL. Just sayin...
    • If he wasn’t fast enough or athletic enough anymore for linebacker, then he’s not going to be able to cut it at Safety where speed , quickness, athleticism are even more important.    Wish it wasn’t so….
