Allen Vs. Fleener

29 posts in this topic

Im just curious as to what everyone's opinion are on these two and who's playing better.

Im a huge Fleener fan ive followed him at Stanford but IMO, I think Dwayne Allen has emerged as the better overall TE. This kid does it all, he is the better blocker more elusive and a better receiver if you ask me. One thing that ive realized is that Allen has amazing hands and makes some great tough grabs. If you watch film on him from the previous games when he is targeted more often than not he catches the ball, and amazingly makes an acrobatic catch or two. Don't get me wrong Fleener has been very serviceable but i don't think he has emerged as that play maker that we were expecting him to be. Allen on the other hand has exceeded expectations and is making a huge impact.

Any thoughts on this everyone?

Allen is playing his strongest football as yet. Fleener's will come.......this should be titled.....Allen AND Fleener. Weapons for years to come. Allen is a bad Jose! Fleener is athletic.... :td: :pass: :helmet::coltshelmet::coltslogo::coltshorse::coltsfb::colts: :colts: :colts: :colts:

There's no 'versus'.....they compliment each other.....and neither is playing as well as I hope they will..

......we need Coby back for the final stretch of games

allen seems better at catching what's thrown his way but if we can get both back playing at a high level we will be unstoppable

Allen is playing better but in no way should they switch roles.

Allen is a stud. Period.

I like Fleener, but I'm more than happy with Saunders blocking ability. Our running game has improved since his arrival.

I thought Allen really, really outplayed Fleener yesterday.

In fact, I thought Fleener played his worst game of the season. He flat out sucked!! (can we say that here?)

It was almost as if he disappeared from the team! Where was that guy? He was useless to Luck!

What? He was hurt? He didn't play? Not at all? Not a single down?

Then why are we having this conversation?!?

^ I think someone has had too much caffeine already today. On topic, I like Allen's ability in the middle of the field. While I like Fleener to be able to get a lot of jump balls. Both TE's, actually all three TE's complement each other perfectly.

I'll take Allen all day, any day. Been saying he'd be better since draft day.

But I certainly would welcome Fleener proving me wrong.

Allen seems to have already met his ceiling, I don't see him getting a whole lot better catching the ball and blocking.

Fleener seems to be the one that has the raw talent.

Allen hands down..we didnt miss a beat yesterday with Fleener being gone..dont think I could say the same if Allen wasnt there..also somebody in this thread mentioned Wesley Saunders who I really like also..overall I like our trio of Tight ends..

I don't really see it as a Competition. But more as the TE Duo up in NE of Hernadez & Gronk. One compliments the other, but BOTH cause problems for Defenses. Now as time goes on, they'll both get better & they will put up good numbers. But I'm just glad we got both of them, definitely a "Steal" imo

i like allen better so far. since the beginning of the season ive been wanting to see more of him, and was pleased with yesterday with the opportunities he got. he fights for literally every yard. nothing against coby fleener, who has also been really great. allen is more of an antonio gates IMO and coby fleener is like a dallas clark.

I think Allen has out performed Fleener all year, and I for one did not expect it. Fleener's hands have seemingly been an issue, even as far back as training camp. I think he's having some growing pains transitioning to the NFL, but I still think Fleener, in the long run, has the tools to be the better TE. I think Fleener has the physicals to be one of the best ever if he can turn that into production.

Sorry, I was just trying to have a little fun with you. Don't take it personally.

You asked a valid question. My only problem is that (A) we've probably had 5-10 different threads on who is better, Allen/Fleener, or what's wrong with Fleener... etc, etc. And (B) Fleener didn't play yesterday, while Allen did and played well. So perceptions are going to be shaped by the most recent game. Based on that, Allen really did outplay Fleener yesterday.

Just one fans point of view.... Sorry, didn't mean to rub you the wrong way...

Allen has been the better tightend, and it was obvious very early on that he was going to be. Fleener struggled badly early, but i will say that he was coming on a little bit before he got hurt. Looked a bit more confident and actually started catching the ball. But Allen is just on another level right now and it's not even that close. He's going to be a stud for a long time.

Allen hasn't outplayed him before yesterday?

Both have been utilized in 7 games, Dwayne wasn't used week one, Allen has played better.

The Fleenor bashers have been here from day 1. He can`t play cornerback, boohooo!

Fleenor had played just as well as Allen overall. We need both of them in the rotation for sure.

Two rookies. Two totally different type of players.. Both have the talent to be special players.

Through 8 weeks their receiving numbers are nearly identical. Allen has 23 for 249, 2 TDs, 10.8 yards per catch, one fumble. Fleener has 21 for 222, 10.6 yards per catch. YAC goes to Fleener by about 20 yards, but he has also been targeted more than Allen. Allen has 15 catches for first downs, Fleener 10. For whatever reason, Allen may be winning the 'eye' test, but I'm really happy with both players. The Colts got the best two TEs in the draft class by nearly all accounts, and by miles in production so far this year too. One thing I feel like I see is the TEs sitting down on routes a lot, turn in the soft spot of the zone and wait to get the ball. Yesterday Allen got hit in stride a few times and ran a bit, and I think that matters, impacts how one 'feels' about produciton. It looks better. But the reality is, in terms of receiving, Allen and Fleener have been nearly identical.

Of course he has. I know that. You know that. We ALL know that!

Sorry, I just grew tired of the least Allen/Fleener thread. Feels like we've had one every week since the start of training camp.

If we all had just $1 for every post on every thread about these two guys, we could all retire right now!!

Sorry, I can't talk much longer. I have to get ready for the latest Allen/Fleener thread. It'll start Friday. Allen is going to catch many more passes than Fleener Thursday night. Yes, Fleener is hurt and not playing, but that's no excuse! He should still be catching passes. And we can talk it about AGAIN later this week in a brand new thread?

OK?

I am in a keeper league and have been banking on pairing Fleener with Luck, but now I'm not so sure... Allen might be a good pick as he appears to be comfortable in the offense, but I am also considering Hilton due to his great upside and we also get points for returns... Any advice?

    • Let's talk UDFA: Tevaun Smith
Smith is one of my favorite UDFA's. My buddy is a Hawks fan so I have seen him play a lot.  He has speed, breaks tackles, is a willing blocker, and the most important thing catches anything close to him. His route tree is limited mainly because Iowa plays such a conservative offense.    I was surprised he went undrafted after his pro day. He is a hard worker and I think he at least makes the PS. I just mentioned him in another thread. The kid has a future on Sunday. He's the WR I'll be watching.    I think Tyms has an advantage over all the WR's because he's proven he can be a good gunner in the league during his time in NE. Bray obviously has an advantage because of return duties

    • Haeg got first team rels at RG over Clark?
I don't think Reitz or Good are going anywhere. In fact one will start at RT. I would be surprised if Harrison isn't around 1 more year at least to be our back up C. I'm not sure only having 2 rookies at the C position is the way we go.    I guess we keep 10 or stash Blythe on the PS keep 9.  Castonzo Mewhort Kelly Thorton Reitz/Good start Harrison and Haeg are the primary back ups. Clark gets a red shirt year for the most part.    I think Blythe can be a fine pro but he needs to get stronger. If he was a 3 position back up out of the shoot you think we get him in the 7th?  We cut the dead weight in Holmes.
    • Extremly early prediction...
In my mind he'd be the 4th back. Turbin is here to be the back up. I think it's his job lose maybe Vsrga takes it but he'd need a really good preseason.    I'm hoping we keep Ferguson or Williams as a scat back. I can't remember a guy like that on our O. Ferguson looks to have really good hands. We could do different things with him. He's another guy that many had being drafted.    That would leave Varga fighting it out for 4th spot or as you mentioned we could stash him on the PS and keep 3. That would leave the door open for an extra WR.   A guy like Tevaun Smith. My buddy is a Hawkeye fan so I fell asleep watching them ast year.  When he did wake me up it was often with the name Tevaun Smith. I was surprised he wasn't drafted after he blew up his pro day. I really like that kid

When I first saw this thread, I thought I was late to the party, but then I saw that this thread has been going since 2012.   I'm still late to the party, but story of my life.  I joined in 2015, but have been a Colts fan since I was a kid.   My first Colts memory is getting a hat signed by Quentin Coryatt at training camp, and that same year almost going to the SB.   My favorite Colts memory is beating the Pats to get to the SB in 2006.   Favorite Colts:   1. Peyton Manning 2. Marvin Harrison 3. Reggie Wayne 4. Dallas Clark 5. Brandon Stokely   Needless to say, Peyton (#1) and everyone he threw the ball to (#2-5) won me many, many fantasy football games, and are my guys for eternity.   You might assume from my top 5 Colts that I am a "new-age" "fairweather" fan who only likes offense and points.  You are wrong.  I am grateful for the offensive Renaissance in Indy, but Defense is my passion.  My secret top 5 Colts: Bob Sanders, Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Cato June, Gary Brackett.   I want Henry Anderson to help lead a Defensive Renaissance in Indy.  Luck and TY are great, and I hope the OLine is outstanding, but the D is the Key.

Hey guys,   I have been posting for probably a year or so now.  I reside in Brazil, IN, which is about 20 minutes East of Terre Haute on I-70.  I'm 28 years old and have been a Colts fan since Harbaugh days, but really started following and rooting hard for them after they drafted Manning in 98.  I love our team and my family and I make sure we are ready to rock for every game.  We always have viewing parties at my father-in-laws or my house and are known to holler and scream at the TV!  Hope all is well with all of you, and GO COLTS!
