CONFIRMED: The Colts today have released Dwight Freeney and Austin Collie.

Mod edit: Renamed the thread, because technically neither player was released.

Confused. What's the whole point of releasing them if they are set to become FA's anyway?

Freeney was not "released" since hes set to be a FA. They just pretty much told him they aren't going to resign him. Collie on the other hand was released.

Freeney must indeed be the square peg....Austin is just a true shame for such a talented guy decimated by injuries.  Two of my favorite Colts of all time.....a sad day for the old linebacker!!!

They were just told they are not going to be re-signed.

Sad news, but neither guy surprises me. They were both fun and exciting to watch! As a former DE, Freeney was an idol of mine in high school... Thank you both from the bottom of my heart!

Collie was signed to a 4 yr. contract in 2009, so he is a FA too. So, both of them were bid adieu without re-signing.

Bleacher Report also cited the Kravitz tweet. Not released, but told they wouldn't be signed.

it's a courtesy so they can start looking for a new gig before free agency begins

technically they are not free agents until march 12th when free agency starts. so they were still on the team and therefor released.

Right call on both players......Freeney was a great player, but at his age and given the current defensive system isn't worth what he's gonna want to be paid.

Hopefully he can go someplace else and have a nice end to his career.

Sad news, but not surprising.

Thanks for everything Dwight. You've been the heart and soul of our defense for years. You'll always be a Colt.

Best of luck.

Collie was Great over the middle.
Larry Foote that was some Forearm smash followed by the knee to the head. No penalty, No Fine.

That was $1.166 Million a tackle OR $2.8 Million a sack. And they still had me worried. TY Jim & Grigs.

I think we shall say a big "Thank You!" for both guys.

Freeney doesn't fit the new system, and Collie...I think he shall retire.

Good luck boys! It was a honor rooting for you!

Sorry to see Freeney go, he has been my favorite defensive player for years. Having said that, it is absolutely the right move not to re-sign him. Good luck #93 wherever you end up

I find it hard to believe Freeney was "Very surprised."

This was coming all year IMO.
In another moment, down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

I feel that guys like Bob Sanders and Austin who contributed so much...only to have careers shortened deserve the love too.....

Poor old Steve Emtman would have been a beast too....not sure on Trev Alberts...:)

Such sad news for Austin Collie, but that move is for the best. I would rather see the man walk away than be carried off the field again. Freeney was a great player for a lot of years.
We may have sucked to get Luck, but we won't suck with him.

Wound up not being about the money. I thought it was all offseason, but I was wrong. The dead cap hit would have been $5m. We carried him for $19m. I still think it was a mistake.

Again, let me reiterate, Freeney and Collie were not released (both are FA), both were told they would not be retained.

OK: Today is a new day. I went to a blood draw yesterday on a fasting blood draw. I did what I was told as usual and they could not draw blood. I drank 3 cups of water, sat 30 minutes...still no blood? I found out a couple of weeks ago I was heartless...now bloodless? I guess we have proven what we have known all along!! :)
