EDGE was always the clear 1st need, IMO.  Ebukam is only a stop gap.  There is a bigger pure vacancy at FS, if you assume Cross is a SS, but That position can be more easily filled.  And this Latu pick has long term implications.

Is it safe to say you liked the pick?  Just curious.  I did.

Ebukam is a free agent. You know Ballard isn't letting one of his draft picks out the door for a guy on a short term contract. And Dayo is more of an interior lineman who can play edge. He isn't a full time edge. I don't think we ever were fooled by what Paye was when we drafted him. We knew he wasn't a high sack player. Both of the edges in this D don't have to be high sack guys. One guy can be more of the run stuffer. And the other guy more of the high sack guy. It's good if you can get big numbers out of both but one of them is the more run stuff specialist.

He let his first ever draft pick leave after four years.  He doesn’t just automatically re-sign all his high picks.

Is this an admission of failure on Paye?  They literally had their pick of any defensive player in this draft and they go EDGE again?!   I’m losing my patience with Ballard.

appears the Vikings were shocked as well.

I said it before. Paye is the weak link on the line.  Ebukam, Buck, and Grover all ranked in the top 20 in pass and/or run win rate.  Qwitty was the only one who didn’t place top 20 in either.

So he had a cervical fusion... this is a surgery I do frequently.  Once it heals the surgery is more or less the strongest part of the neck.  The biggest problems with a fusion in this context are:

(1) loss of nerve function prior to surgery may or may not recover after surgery, usually over the next 3-12 months (but his production after surgery implies no major concern on this)

(2) the patient will have somewhat accelerated wear/arthritis at non fused levels.  While this is a real concern, it will unfortunately be more of an issue for him later in life, after his NFL career.

Peyton had this surgery as his final neck surgery before playing for the broncos, but his problem was number one above, he apparently never had the same arm strength as before.

Ahmad Bradshaw also had this same surgery in 2013, he already had I think 6 years of RB play prior to that.  His YPC held up but was utilized less, but this may mirror more a tapering RB career.

I'm not personally worried about the medical status of this player, but I have no idea the actual details obviously.  I will say that very few surgeons would be eager to clear the player to play afterwards, mostly for the stupid liability things in medicine.

I think it's fair to say we got a really nice pick here for value.

Thanks for sharing

That means not complaining about what Ballard did which is what this poster was going to do regardless of the pick.  Pretty easy to tell if you read the poster’s posts.  He just wants to rail on Ballard so fine rail.

I admit, I didnt read his previous posts.

I  get so comfused as to why so many people just seem to have no interest in finding a positive thing to say, like ever.

You have to be in the top 20 to be good enough?

I thought all of the options were good options, even a RT.  Would have been disappointed if we picked DeJean at 15.

Yes, I like the pick because it sets us up with long term solutions at the three most important positions on an NFL team, QB, LT, and EDGE, so things fell right for us.  And we have Paye for the other side.

As far as Latu specifically, I am concerned about his bend.  From the tape, he seems to run around the OTs sort of straight up instead of ducking around them.  But I may not be seeing it right.  But yes, I like the pick.

Hopefully with his traits he can be coached up too!

You and me both.  Some just work really hard at being unhappy and then want others to be unhappy with them.

Yeah let the better pass rusher walk and keep the drafted players. Go Colts

No honestly don’t. More just wondering out loud why you’d make a post saying you’re leaving yet… here you are.

Also, I hope Latu can draw attention and help Paye as well as Buckner.  Should be fun to watch.

When have we kept any of these short contract guys? Paye is the run stuffing edge in this D. That's his job. He doesn't have to be Freeneys.

meh, not saying that.  But in this scheme, we need to be able to rush with our front 4 because we’re not blitzing.  We know Grover know isn’t here to rush the passer, so that falls on Ebukam, Buck, and qwitty.  So that puts more pressure on those 3 to get the job done, and if one of those 3 can’t get it done, then it makes it easier for the opposing offensive line to prevent pressure.  On another team, Paye may be a stud, but on this one he’s just serviceable.

Or maybe you just have unrealistic expectations?

He is entering his 4th year. He has gotten better every year. He should continue to get better.

A guy who put up 16.5 sacks last year, Trey Hendrickson, had only 6.5 sacks over his first 3 seasons combined. Kwity has 3 times that many. Hes been very good.

People have to stop expecting guys to make the HOF in their early 20s.

I have no clue what colts will do tomorrow because I have no clue if there is any WR left or what CB could be there. Doesn’t seem to be a very deep class after this first round.

Those are arguably the two deepest positions in the draft
