Report: Vontae Davis found dead

Recommended Posts

Mods, feel free to delete or merge if this has already been posted.

I came across a few posts on Twitter suggesting that Vontae Davis passed away at age 35. However, it is April 1, and I have yet to find any sort of verified source for this. I’m hoping this is a bad prank in poor taste, but my gut is telling me otherwise.

Has anybody come across any other sources for this news? If this is true, it is so tragic. Vontae had his challenges in life, but by all accounts he was a pretty good guy. I have always been biased, since I had loved him when he played for university of Illinois as well.

Below, I will link the article I came across.

I think you posted a legit source.  TV stations don’t post stories like that as an April fools joke.

Agreed. I’m seeing a couple of other outlets like CBS repost that original article about the death investigation. It sounds legitimate.

I’m pretty bummed out…

People are definitely running with it.

I agree the story is vague and could be a different male?

I'll hold comments till confirmation. Sad if true, too many are dying way to early.

I've been to 2 funerals in the last month. Ages (54 + 43)

That's sad to hear. He played for 9 years & didn't get a chance to enjoy 9 years of retirement.

honestly, I’m pretty sure this is the exact point that is making this so difficult for me to process. I’m very curious to hear more of the details once everything comes out. 35 is just way too young…

When I first saw this a couple hours ago, I thought it was just a really stupid April Fools joke. Now it's looking legit, and that really sucks.

Couldn’t agree more. I just want to know why/how.

They just talked about it a bit on Pat's show.

So sad to hear. Between how he retired, what we saw of him via Hard Knocks, I imagine this is unfortunately mental health related. He always struck me as a guy that was dealing with some demons and I hope he's at peace.

This is exactly what I am most afraid of.

Darius Butler talking about it now. He's crushed and is struggling getting through it. Sounds like he received confirmation via some close friends/family.

Definitely sounds like Vontae was struggling a bit based on some of the comments.

I would like to see the NFL ramp up additional supports for current and former players. Kicking the stigma is good, but it’s going to take a much more intentional and targeted effort to curb some of these emerging trends with mental wellness.

well wiki is a pretty trusted source and they have it.........I take that back they just took it off their website, not sure if anyone knows. 1 second it was on he passed the next it was gone. mods may want to lock this until we find out this is not a terrible joke. sorry for the misinformation

Anyone can edit wikipedia, someone edited it earlier to say Vontae "retired from life", before it was changed.

Seems the confirmation I have seen, has been the tweet from the Illinois coach

Hopefully untrue, but seeming like it very well could be.

Unfortunately, it seems that this is accurate. The TMZ article has a quote from one of Vontae’s personal friend’s facebook post.

The players union needs to step it up. I remember Eric Dickerson talked about this on Speak for Yourself a few years ago after the new CBA was ratified. The current players didn't want to expand the benefits for the retirees. Eric Dickerson was trying to get them to understand by taking care of the retirees, they'd be taking care of themselves in the future. He was upset because a lot of former players he played with are struggling mentally.

This is the first I have heard of that; however, I haven’t actively been looking for any content on this topic.

If true, that seems like a very shortsighted approach for the players to take…

Gosh this is so very sad. I hate this stuff. I was looking through his instagram and he removed all of his pictures of him and his wife. I wonder if something was going on there. Dealing with some inner demons. Really sad!

Fox59 is reporting it now so I’d say it’s a sad truth

Making this especially sad….  When Vonte announced his retirement he said he was getting out of the NFL while he was still young and healthy and he could enjoy life.

And now this.   Awful.   Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

RIP Vonte….

I wouldn’t go that far — yet.   It’s just as likely he had an accidental overdose, or an allergic reaction.   More details will come out soon enough.

    • Oh no doubt about that. I absolutely value the fact that people like Brugler, Cosell, Jeremiah, etc. actually do the work and take their job seriously. And I also agree that others do very surface level stuff(more akin to what most of us here are doing here as a hoby. Except... they get paid for it).    My angle is not exactly "everyone is the same", they are not. That's why I value extremely highly the work some do and not so much others. And I agree that just because a player doesn't hit, it doesn't mean the evaluation was faulty... or just because a player hits unexpectedly, I don't think the evaluation was necessarily faulty either. It's important to see the reasoning behind the projections and it is important to recognize the uncertainty in any projection really. IMO the uncertainty covers for a lot of shoddy "work" and rankings because a lot of talking heads can just parrot hits and omit misses. So they are not all the same, but their results might be very close to each other. Just like in the NFL - the difference between good and bad GMs in hit rate is in single digit number over the long term. You won't get one GM that hits 80% and another that hits 20%(Although... Grigson probably was close to that one).   Part of it is because the ones that don't do the work, actually copy and plagiarize the work that the great ones do... example, they will take the Jeremiah and Brugler's big boards and will mash them together and just switch a few names around, or if they have a favorite they will bump him up while dropping a specific one they don't like, but in the grand scheme of things the results wouldn't be dramatically different. So the value for me is from the actual verifiable work those people do and the way they present information. WIth people like Brugler or Cosell you can actually tell that it's them that are doing the work. They give you detailed reports on why they think what they think about those prospects. And they are almost never extreme in their opinions - i.e. "this player is trash, he would never succeed in the league". You know they actually sit down and watch those guys play and actually do scouting reports from what they see on tape, rather than from what they've heard someone else say about those players. And with Brugler, even furthermore, you see a ton of background information about those players. He's pretty much doing what scouts for the teams are doing. He's digging about the childhood and adolescence of those players, he's digging up red flags, medical information(whatever is available), etc. And he's just one person. And he's doing it for 400+ players every year. You can only respect that. And I derive a ton of more value out of it than I do out of a random pundit's QB ranking for which I probably have watched more tape than he has.
    • Agreed   By mid year, this offense might be special,    I wonder if our defense can at least get to 15, in points allowed   Having an offense that grinds it our, will help the defense stay fresh
    • You’re welcome! I agree, some really good information and worth a watch.
    • Bortolini was very good at the Senior Bowl. Technically sound and quick. I would not be surprised at all if either him or Concalves starts right guard this year, and I like Fries, I'm one of the few on here who doesn't think he sucks. We may be so good running the ball this year Richardson won't have to throw much(20-25 times a game?) This offense is going to be fun to watch and we should win a lot of games as long as we aren't playing cb's 10 yards off the line and dropping linebackers 12 yards deep on 3rd and 3. Go Colts!
