He was also a Canadian Football player who Grigson somehow thought he'd pan out.

He gave him a piddly contract & a chance to compete in training camp. That's it. I still don't know where the notion came from that Grigson "thought he'd pan out." If anything, I'd guess Grigson gave Carter maybe a 20% chance to make the 53 man roster.

This dude is extra small.  Shorter and lighter than Mathis.

I'm pumping my breaks on the CFL guys.  Same type of hype

people gave to Mwamba and he wasn't anything.   Kids gotta show me something.

I agree. His hilight video didn't show much really.

Happy grigs is turning rocks tho.

i'd like to see mathis back as assistant coach.  Similar to what joey porter is doing. I think he has knowledge (all his and freeney's tricks), and would bring attitude, work ethic, and accountability to the position.

Because he signed him, maybe.

I'm assuming when you say "similar to what Joey porter is doing" you aren't referring to his recent arrest.

Bad timing for a comparison haha.

Robert Mathis was called the same. Hes no robert mathis but at least give him a chance

Mathis was nowhere near that small though.  This dude is smaller than most NFL QBs and Running Backs.

For the record, I don't have a chance to give here...just an opinion.

Mathis was 6'2 235 coming out of college.  But this guy isn't a kid,  doubtful he is gonna get thicker

correction, he never earned a chance to do anything.

What other players are available to be signed right now?  Would you rather Grigson just sit around and do nothing right now?  You probably would, just so you could then complain about him not doing anything right now to try to improve the team.  Classic case of damned if he does...damned if he doesn't.

Why are you riding my jock? I made a comment about the post dude might get cut anyway nothing much is gonna happen until the season is over obviously

If he gains 10 to 15 pounds of muscle by the beginning of the season, he'll have a chance to compete for a spot on the roster. We don't know how his talent level in the CFL will translate to the NFL, nobody does, but luckily, he's cheap, and he's basically a $1 scratch ticket with a lot of lower profitable prizes. As long as it doesn't stop us from loading up on pass rush, he's as good as anyone available right now.

I'm not talking about who to sign obviously there's nothing because the season is not over yet I just wouldn't waste my time with the CFL period

I bet Miami is glad they did.  They got Cameron Wake.  Jerrell Freeman was also from the cfl.

Yeah, he signed him to a whopping $25,000 guaranteed deal. They have to sign everyone on the 90 man training camp roster to some type of contract. They're not allowed to just have a random bunch of dudes on the field.

Yes, I understand this but I'm not sure why he's spending time with the CFL, Rugby players, etc. This is my point, which apparently, I didn't articulate very well.

Why wouldn't he?  Every team looks at players in the cfl, arena league,  small colleges every year

I realize that there is an issue of not being able to find your starter, but I'd rather go with players who understand NFL defenses and who could potentially make your roster-to avoid Adongoizing a player.

So,  college kids shouldn't be drafted?  They have never played against or on an nfl defense.    Adongo was a rugby player they tried to coach up.  It didn't work,  who cares.  Swoope is working out pretty well,  as did Freeman

With that mindset there would be no Antonio Gates and some of the other successful conversions around the league. There would be no Jimmy Graham as no one would take out the time to develop them. They'd just go with more NFL ready players. There's plenty of people who understand the game who get put on the 90 man roster in preseason and off season who don't have a chance in hell of making the roster. They are both in the same boat as the guy whose being trained. Neither has much of a shot initially. Might as well give them all a look.

Literally no other players available right now. As far as understanding NFL defense, he's an edge rusher, he really only has one job.

I watched, and unfortunately had to listen to, 1:20 of the 6:10 video before I saw any actual footage of him doing anything.  Who puts this stuff together?

Well it's the new age and you need to know if a guy is going to be able to strut around and act like he saved the world after every play he makes...clearly this guy makes the cut...should be an instant star

All of this talk about him being 6'1" and 227.

For what it's worth....   the colts list him at 6'2" and 240.

It's right here in a story on Colts.com.

Who cares about his height?  Can he ball?  Thta's what people should be asking...

I'm kinda skeptical about any CFL signings after we signed the best linemen in their league and he never played a down for us, and we signed one of their standout WRs and he just filled a roster spot.

Yeah, but we also signed an LB who was a solid contributor for several years.  You never know with CFL guys. Just because they whale in the CFL doesn't mean they'll make it to stardom here.  You look for certain traits and hope for the best.  Really, the best way to look at these guys is as a UDFA with professional experience.  Chances are they fall off, there's a small chance they stick around as special teams and maybe even sub package guys, and in the rarest cases, they turn into all-pros.

    • So damn classy as always. I still rewatch their pandemic golf game from 2020. They just have awesome chemistry together. Hopefully they can get Tom on the Manningcast again for more hilarity.
    • Uuuugh.     I think it would’ve been better if I had preached a healthy dose of patience and NOT patients.
    • Feel the need to clarify something.   The writer of the article, Bob McGinn, is one of the top-10 football writers there is.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) McGinn does NOT have an opinion on Mitchell.  It’s the unnamed scouts who have the negative opinions.  McGinn is quoting them which is his job.  He is supposed to do that.     Ballard even acknowledged that in his own way.  He literally said “put your name on it!”   Well, McGinn’s name IS on it.  it’s his column.   But it’s the scouts who are saying things anonymously.   If there’s an issue, (if) it’s with them, not McGinn.
    • And when/if a team signs one of those safeties they’ll be made to look like a genius while Ballard is called a fool.    I think what’s more likely is that an injury will inevitably happen and a team will bring in an available free agent. That could be training camp. That could early in the season. You just never know.
    • But if the Colts sign someone next week or the week after then it really doesn’t matter.    I would’ve preferred we sign some two weeks ago.   Get them familiar with the DC and position coach.   But once we didn’t then it really doesn’t matter when.  It just matters that we do it before camp opens.  At least to me.    And the fact no one else is signing these top FA safeties tells me the market just isn’t there yet.   I’m preaching a healthy dose of patients.
