I think its funny that a lot of people on this thread are taking that flight to california thing seriously...if you look at the TIME on that link, it clearly shows that it could NOT have been Irsay lol he was in Indy for a press conference at 4pm...but was in california at the same time? strange lol

Not believing anything what the media is saying now. After today and how 24 hours make and how the media was still saying that Caldwell was staying to the very end of the breaking news. BOOM he got canned. I will wait and see what Irsay and Ryan says. Also who would in their right mind thinks that Caldwell is a great coach, and wants under him?

How true, I think we all learned a lesson today, I know I did.

I've been saying Zimmer or Fisher as HC Tom Clements (Packers QB Coach) as OC and Steve Spagnuolo since the beginning and I'm stickin with it.

And man, I've seen Wade Phillips, Brad Childress, Peyton Manning and Joe Paterno as suggestions. :whew:

Nobody who talked about the flight said anything about Irsay or Grigson being on it, and as they both were at the presser, it was clear neither could be on it. Why couldn't a plane be sent to pick someone up, or drop somone off in Van Nuys? If that is Irsay's plane, that's what it would be used for at a moment like this. To pick up candidates to bring them to the owner and GM for interviews for the job. Of course Irsay could have simply wanted his favorite fish tacos from some SoCal joint too. Who knows. I would suggest watching where the plane goes is of more value than wishing Fisher had waited or hoping Gruden leaves ESPN, something he has repeatedly said he is not interested in doing right now. I have no idea if that's Irsay's plane, but some believe it is and post it's location and travels all the time. Maybe it was Peyton seeing his doctor in Marina Del Ray too - a 30 minute drive from Van Nuys to Marina Del Ray. Or the doc coming to town to see Peyton. This whole thread is speculation and fan opinion. The plane, if owned by Irsay, is an interesting thing to watch in my opinion. Not in a weird stalking way - in a HC candidate way.

I am now convinced you are right. Based on Irsay's last tweet, he clearly won a rare vinyl copy of James McMurtry's Too Long in The Wasteland album, and was playing the song Angeline. I mean, to tweet those lyrics, there is no other plausible explanation.

First Post Hoorah, I would like to keep going with the young blood, get a coach younger than 50, with some playing experience. Looking at the playoff teams this year, We have Tomlin 39, Jim and John Harbaugh 48 and 49 respectively, Sean Payton 48, Gary Kubiak 49, and over the past few years the form teams consistently making play offs have been Steelers, Packers, Saints and Ravens. Obviously I haven't mentioned Bellichick and NE, but I think its worth a shot.

I'm sorry for everyone that wants Bill. He isn't a good head coach at all. You have to do some research and you'll find out that Dick Lebeau is the mastermind behind the Steelers success. I've put this in another thread but in the 90's when Dick left the team Bill did nothing until 2004 when Dick came back. Wikipedia it if you want to. I'd consider having Dick Lebeau coach the team, but I can't stand the Stealers.

I have been trying to get people on this board to see Cowher for what his record says he is for years. He took one of the most storied franchised in the NFL and won one Super Bowl in 14 years. I believe that his teams lost more home conference championships than any team ever. He is not a great coach, but some people love him because he knows how to scream and spit on the sidelines.

I know it's an outside shot and I doubt he would want to leave but I think anyone be dumb not to call Nick Saban on the phone and offer him a job.........watching the National Championship proves the guy can coach, not to mention San Fran proves college coaches can transition in one year to the NFL.......

i like the way you overlook the fact that gruden took the tampa team to sb after dungy continually underachieved with it. and dungy didn't build anything, he was just the coach. and gruden did an excellent job in oakland...considering he was working for al davis.

not that i'm for hiring gruden...

Tony built that team in TB.

After the SB, the TB team literally fell apart..... With Gruden at the helm.

He was let go

In Oakland, I believe Gruden had 2 good years.

Gruden might be a decent coach.....BUT...... Doesnt deserve the mystical praise given to him, by some

on this board.

In reality, there are a few coaches that might work out here.

After so many years of an average defense I would love the HC to at least have some strengths on the defensive side of the field.

A great OC, paired with a defensive minded coach, could be what we need.

  • Jim Tressel
  • Mike Zimmer
  • Rob Chudzinski
  • Brian Billick
  • Wade Phillips

I would love to see Zimmer or Wade Phillips as HC. Wade Phillips is a great Defensive minded coach that would fix this Indy D. With the right fit for OC, the colts would be a dangerous team.

That was also the theory of Phillips in Denver, Buffalo, and Dallas as a head coach. It didn't pan out there and while I am for giving someone a second chance I think if by the time you are asking for a fourth chance at something it's pretty clear it's not going to work.

I agree with you 100% that I think Phillips is a great defensive mind but I also think he's just a great coordnator and he's just not cut out to be a head coach. Nothing wrong with that. Tom Moore felt that way about himself for years and I think he had a great career.

dungy didn't build the team in tampa....he was never the gm. it believe it was rich makay. and it was sam wyche who drafted the core of that defense in warren sapp, john lynch and derrick brooks.

Tony was a huge factor as a head coach and being a driving factor of turning that team around.

I never said that he was the GM.

Before Tony........... That team went only one season of 10 wins...... Over a 20 year period.

You may be down-playing the impact that he had on that team..... By a great bit

You heard it here first. The new HC of the Indianapolis Colts is going to be Lane Kiffin, HC USC Trojans. He took over a USC team that was ineligible for post season play, many of the best players left to go to other schools and recruiting was tough because of the suspensions. But he recruited well, is very organized, great at developing a game plan and has learned a lot since his brief stint as HC of the Oakland Raiders.

And Bob Hope airport in Van Nuys, CA is only about 20 miles from the USC campus. :mindblow:

Fisher had a worse winning percentage than Caldwell, only made it to the playoffs 6 times in 17 years and only one SB in which he lost. What, exactly, makes him a good answer.

Would be a great hire in my opinion. We need a guy who has HC experience and is a great leader and Kelly is just that. Also Kelly is very smart so I think his transition to the NFL would be a success especially with talent at QB and bringing in more young talent.

The way I want to say no cannot be said here without A) A 24 hour Ban B) Making someone cry C) blowing up the chat room and D) Making Jim Irsay flip out. As much as I like Kelly as a coach for Oregon, the way he runs offense I can't see it being effective in the NFL. The whole Oregon Blur game wouldn't work in the NFL. Coaching College works for him extremely well and he should stay at that level. The NFL would be a disaster in my opinion...

No. Kiffin is not surviving the sanctions just to walk away from getting Barkley to return, and a real national championship chance. Kiffin's history of bouncing is established, but not now. USC is loaded, he won't walk this year. More to the point, we've seen existing OCs and DCs being sought on day one, and Grigson himself said in the presser yesterday something to the effect that there are 600 NFL coaches, and he'll find the right one. I think they will exclusively look at NFL assistants/coordinators.

"A three-year starter at Notre Dame (1972-74) under Ara Parseghian, Clements led the Irish to a 29-5 record, including an unblemished national championship season in 1973. An All-American in 1974, he finished fourth in Heisman Trophy balloting when Archie Griffin earned the award. Clements received his degree in economics from Notre Dame in 1975."

I don't know if this guy has been talked about, if so sorry,but I was thinking that Bruce Arians would be a great choice. He comes from one of the best fun franchises in the game and is familiar with the Colts. I think it would be a great fit.

I can't make an official thread about it because I don't have enough posts yet, but for those asking for Bruce Arians as head coach, word from the Steelers camp is he just retired:

From reading the reaction from Steelers fans, they seem to be happy about it. Like I said earlier, the guy wasn't getting interviews for a reason. Makes me wonder if he finally called it quits because he wasn't getting any phone calls..
