Evan Mathis Visiting Seattle

I guess it makes no difference to some that there is a cap limit and Grigson is not going to put the Colts in the position they were in when he was hired. It could be Grigson is looking out for next season with who on the team needs new contracts. None of us really know for sure if he has even talked to Mathis or his agent.

I hear you!! And some wonder why fans have a problem with Grigson.

In the middle of contract talks with people were going to have to pay tons and then there's luck, you want to bring in and pay a guard who is going to demand tons of money?

I just wonder if some fans have common sense.

If Evan Mathis was the best guard in football, he wouldn't be currently unemployed

Mathis is the best guard in football?

He's certainly one of the best.  I think there are two reasons why he is currently unemployed.  The first is that he's asking for/expecting more money than teams are willing to give him.  Secondly, I don't think he's in any rush to get signed during training camp.  He's been through training camp several times and I've heard a lot of veterans say they really hate the grind of training camp.  I think he'll probably sign somewhere in a week or two so he doesn't have to put his body through training camp, but will still have enough time to learn the offense.

I don't think Mathis is the best guard in the NFL by any means, but I'm still not sure how we didn't even bring him in for a workout.

Guard is our weakest spot now that Mewhort moved to Tackle.

Coming from Philly I'm going to trust Grigson to have done enough homework to know EXACTLY what Mathis would bring to the Colts...and I am going to assume that Evan Mathis history is well known to Grigson along with his age and contract requirements probably are not in line with our current teams vision.

He's not chopped liver that's for sure, but to call him the best guard in football, as the other poster did, is hyperbole.

Wasn't he the top ranked guard by PFF standards last year?

To be honest PFF is fine but I personally do not believe it to be the be all and end all when it comes to ranking/evaluating players. As I wrote previously Mathis is a very good player, but he is not, IMO, the best guard in football.

Which do you think is better at Evaluating players, PFF or MADDEN???

Well, I am not sure how Madden rates it's players, but given how upset some posters get over player rankings in that game it is probably pretty close to PFF in importance.

No it isn't. He's been the best guard in the league for years.

This "Evan Mathis is overrated" meme needs to die.

I didn't say he was overrated, but I don't believe most would say he is the best guard either. If he was the best he would not have been cut nor would he have been unemployed for this long, not for 5 or 6 million a year.

That's irrelevant, because he is.

Well, he would. Because he is the best guard, and those things happened.

who has been better?

Off the top of my head I would say either guard for the Cowboys and Yanda for the Ravens. If I felt like going thru everyone's roster I'd guess there may be a couple more. Again he is very good and would be an upgrade, but not the best in football.

He may or may not be the best guard,  but he's clearly top-5 and possibly top-3.

So then you have to ask yourself.......    Why is Evan Mathis currently a free agent?

The team that had him tried to trade him and couldn't.    So, they cut him.   Why?

He's been a free agent for how many months now?    And still,  no team has signed him.

Something is going on.....

Either he's asking for too much money at this point in the pre-season,  or he's not as good as he thinks he is,  or both.

But something is not right here.

    • Time for this weeks prediction. I'm 1-1 thus far. I really didn't think we could conceivably lose to a qb who had only thrown 6 career passes heading into last Sundays game, but as they say."on any given Sunday the Irsay's can lose to any inferior opponent while making a journeyman qb look like an all-pro"(I paraphrased that a little, but it is historically accurate). So, onto todays game, facing a rookie qb making just his 3rd nfl. start, 4 fewer than ours, so that really balances out. If we use the offensive game plan against the Bears that we used against the Texans and mix in some deep throws we will shut up the yapping Bears defense and win. If we use the pedestrian, bland offensive game plan we used against the Packers we will lose. I am going to flip a coin, hold on-------------the coin says we will win! So I'll go with the win today. Game time at 1 o'clock, go Colts!!!!
    • I watched a Mike Tyson documentary last night, what stood out was Tyson ALWAYS took the fight to the opponent, he NEVER sat back and waited for his opponent to attack him. Maybe Gus and the Colt defense should take note of that. Against the Texans we attacked down field, the Packer game we threw ONE pass over 50 yards(last play of the game). Disappointing thus far, but onto to the Bears.
    • Where is Davis at? Also why is Grover not playing nose instead? This makes no sense to me.
    • You?    Disagree with me?!?    Gee, that only happens 24/7/365.   🙄
    • It's easy for other people to say for someone else to walk away from like $160 million guaranteed. We know your health, especially mental, is more important than money. But generation wealth & financial security for your self and family is hard to turn your back to
