This is a typical Pats move but, I love reading about things like this because it shows that some organizations are thinking in ways that others don't expect.

I am a huge fan of how the Pats do this.

Danny Woodhead

Jake Ballard

Tyler Gaffney

Who is next?

Ballard never suited up for the pats. Gaffney probably won't either

So...

It disrupts the plans of organizations around the league. They are playing a better game of football because they don't stop playing when off of the gridiron.

They are punishing other teams because they can! The confidence in making moves like this is astounding to me.

I was sad to hear about Gaffney's injury. I was looking forward to seeing him play. He was such a beast at Stanford last year.

Not sure how much he would've played this year for Carolina....

He's still behind Williams and Stewart....   and they get almost all of the carries for the Panthers....

That's true. I just wanted to see what he could do in any capacity. I'm sure he'll be back though.

Hard to say they're punishing the Panthers when the Panthers would rather have a camp body on the roster than wait 4 more weeks to put Gaffney on the IR.

Yeah, this is a nice move. They are always surveying the waiver wires for talented guys that they can get on the cheap.

This is why the Colts haven't IR'd Ballard yet. Since he is not yet a vested veteran, he'd have to clear waivers.

Wouldn't the Colts have to waive Ballard in order for him to go on waivers, not just put him on IR?

Jake Ballard

Yeah, they had high hopes for Ballard but he never made it out of TC last year. I had a friend that went to a few of the TCs and said Ballard looked great in his view but they cut him at the end of August. He just wasn't the same player as he was with the Giants. A shame as with Gronk going down he would have been key to help keep the TE position viable.

Oh so you can't put anyone on IR until the season actually starts?

I would agree with you there, it would have made more sense to just wait and put him on IR unless you are already convinced that you wouldn't have wanted the player anyways.

In order to put a player on IR while the rosters are at 90 players it has to be a "vested veteran". (The Colts had to do the waive/injured reserve thing with Ben Ijalana a couple years ago.) It's also the reason Ballard isn't on the IR yet. If the Panthers wanted to keep Gaffney all they would have had to do was wait until the final cuts and IR him. My guess is he was on the roster bubble anyways with Williams, Stewart and Tolbert being there and the Panthers weren't all that impressed with him.

The Patriots sure do seem to like to sign guys with knee injuries.

This is a long-term-plan type of move. Three of their RBs (Vereen, Ridley, and Bolden) are in the final years of their contracts. I seriously doubt all three will be back for 2015.

During the 90 man roster period, a player must FIRST go through waivers in order to go to IR.  Unless the player is a veteran, which in this case, Ballard is not.

If we want to put Ballard on IR, we will wait until the rosters are cut down and he will have to take up a spot until then.  Or....we could try to pass him through waivers and move him to IR now, but the other 31 teams would have a chance to claim him before he was on our IR.

Imagine that. Pats cherry picking other teams players on IR. It's an unwritten rule throughout the league that you don't really do that.

Maybe the NFL should change that rule so teams don't have to be scared of other teams taking their IR'd players.

Plenty of teams have done it. Not just the Pats. It is not rule so don't try to paint them like they are doing something illegal or against the code of ethics. They have had their players cherry picked too over the years.

I didn't say it was illegal, it's just frowned upon.

And there's really no argument you can make that would paint the Pats ethical. Sorry man.

What are you talking about? It's standard practice league wide.

It's not frowned upon. That is the basic flaw in your premise. And no team is ethical least of all the Colts. Sorry man.

What? It's not frowned upon. The player was on waivers and therefore can be picked up. If the Panthers wanted to keep him then they should have just carried him.

Does anyone have a link or list of how many times this has happened. Not very often is my guess

I remember that the Browns put rookie cornerback Don Carey on IR and the Jags picked him up. I think that was in 2010. It is really easy to prevent this. Just wait to put them on IR. Teams used to hoard young talent before this rule came about. Once a player reaches their four season, they no longer have to go to waivers.
