After hearing his asking rate, then they went

Adam Schefter reported this as well. I don’t think all the teams called. Only a contender would make sense given the potential asking price and new contract he would receive. This tells me the Colts view themselves as Super Bowl contenders with a window that is now open. And they are prepared to make moves that could help them take advantage of that window. We are back on the cusp. -
Those contracts are standard. The NFL has made it so the players and the teams can't really squabble over anything important. Everything that is left to negotiate is minor details - like schedule of payment or off-set language(it seems like this last one has in generally been lost by the players and the rookie contracts with favorable off-set language to the player are nowadays few and far between), or whether the team can suspend payments for some reasons(for example, if the player gets suspended by the league). The reason Mitchell's contract wasn't signed until today might have been super trivial ... like... maybe his agent wanted to meet Ballard and make the signing official in person, but his scheduling didn't allow them to meet until now... or maybe they did have some minor thing to negotiate. In any case - AD hasn't been anything but professional so far(both Steichen and Reggie have been complimentary about the way he's worked). He participated in rookie mini-camp, and he has participated in every single OTA so far, despite not having signed his contract. We should be a big more generous with our assumptions about players. Unless we explicitly hear there is some type of problem IMO we should just assume there is none.

And if I know Ballard, I’m sure they were factoring him coming back from injury and competing into their plans at safety. I think you have to go get a veteran now for depth if nothing else. Idk if Cross, Blackmon, and Thomas is enough for 17 games.

Yep, agree. If both hands had a chance to get them, you got to get them. That is what Bill Polian would say "if it hits your hands (plural), you need to come down with it". Didn't say fingers, didn't say singular hand.
