I'm not necessarily supporting the decision, but there's some logic behind it. We've seen multiple successful hail mary attempts this season already. We've never seen a successful 68 yard FG. Also, we're really talking about one play, not the entire possession. The Colts didn't play hail mary prevent from the beginning, they gradually moved back on each play. The first play was deflected and almost intercepted because the second level was only about 10 yards back. And on the last pass play, the coaches were signaling the defenders to move up, recognizing that the Pats weren't just going to throw the hail mary. Still too passive and conservative IMO, and Maye had options on every play that might have yielded more yards. I question whether the Pats entire plan was to get into FG range. I think it's possible they adjusted to the Colts defense on each play. Even if they were playing for the FG from the beginning, I think they obviously wanted more than 20 yards. Slye's career long is 63 yards, in much better conditions. They probably wanted 25+, given the 30 degree weather. I think Tice's criticism is a little harsh because a) the Colts weren't playing hail mary prevent for the entire possession, so it's not like they ignored the possibility of the Pats trying to gain 25 yards from the beginning; and b) the defense adjusted on each play. Finishing with a record length FG attempt isn't totally egregious. Side point: I bet if we had a list of historical FG kickers' career bests, a good number of them are vs the Colts. Career high, playoff career high, career high game winner, etc. Kickers seem to show out vs the Colts. Part of that is probably playing in a dome, but I don't know how to explain a kick that would have been good from 64/65 yards, in 30 degree weather in Foxborough.
