I assume you mean the catch over the middle of the pass that was thrown behind him? Yes, that was a fantastic catch, the type of catch that he typically hasn't made for us. He played a very good game, hopefully, he is getting it together.

It was a poor throw by Andrew, but Fleener made a great adjustment to catch it. I think with Fleener all of us are just asking for a bit more consistency. Allen is more explosive and the more reliable target at this moment, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

He had a good game, and personally, I wouldn't consider him soft, but he does need to make more of those tougher catches.

He's a good player but he's soft

The play last year against the Titans I believe it was on the Thursday night game. When Fleener was having his mini coming out season. Threw a pass up the sideline for him.

He's running alone and a CB is in his way. Instead of running the CB over, he runs out of bounds. Never should a TE run from a CB, it just shouldn't happen.

That's just one of the soft examples. He seriously has the measures to be a poor man's Jimmy Graham but he needs to find that mean streak.

I'm not saying go out and take unnecessary hits but when he's coming across the middle or having jump balls in the Redzone/end zone..... He should be winning 9/10 times

It should have started a few weeks back against Tennessee.     Fleener has a terrific sliding catch inside the 5 for a gain of about 30 years.    A very hard catch that most tight ends couldn't dream of making.     Then, the next play,  Fleener was in tight and got mugged at the line of scrimmage by a linebacker.    Fleener tossed him off like a rag doll and went into the end zone and caught Luck's TD pass.

 

The plays were either back to back or pretty close to back to back.    Either way they were both very good plays and should've helped calm down all the "soft" talk....    but not with this crowd....   that's going to keep coming for many more years to come.

 

Folks here are very, very slow to change their opinions.    Apparently,  Crow doesn't taste good......

Dwayne Allen is a legitimate tight end and will be one of the best in the league if he continues to play like he is.

 

Fleener is a luxury and will be shipped out when the rookie contracts end and Luck, Hilton, Allen get the big bucks.

The thing is those plays have been few and far between with him. He's been more likely to drop a fairly easy catch than haul in a tough catch like the one yesterday or the one vs the Titans. I'm not saying he's soft (I hate that term), but he's been inconsistent and often plays like he's not confident in himself.

As I said, yesterday was a very good game for him and no one can take that away from him (blocking and receiving). I hope he builds on it.

I don't want to turn this into a negative Fleener thread. I'm just explaining my view.

You may or may not be right,  but for right now, it's all speculation.

 

But right now Fleener is much more than a luxury.  He's a key part of the best offense in the league (at least, statistically speaking)

 

Instead of enjoying him for what he brings to the table,  all you can think about is a year and a half from now when we can get rid of him......

If you really think we took Fleener in the second round because he was friends with Luck or they played on the same team watching a game may not help you. You probably need someone to sit down and explain what is actually happening to you. Then please go practice on a different board for a few years come back we will see how far you have come. I didn't say he was taken in the second round because he's friends with Luck. I said being friends with Luck isn't going to help the fact Allen is twice the player he is.

Fleener is fine, but not special.  I think he gets a bad rep because he got selected ahead of Allen and went to school with Luck so there was this expectation that Luck and Fleener would have this great connection out of the gate.

 

Instead Allen has outplayed Fleener pretty much from day 1.  

 

So he's sort of in the tough position of being beat out by a player selected behind him in the same draft.  But he's not a bad player or anything.  Heck when the Seahawks contacted us, word is they wanted to trade Harvin for Fleener straight up.

However I think it's possible Fleener might get extended anyways because they use a lot of 2 TE sets and split the TE's out wide.  Even with Allen back we still use Fleener a good amount.

This is the first game this year where Fleener didn't play scared, and he did great. That catch was very impressive.

I don't know about re-signed but he's not going to be cut, that's silly.  

 

Even if we wanted to get rid of him, he'd have trade value, cutting him would be beyond stupid.

Its frustrating because you can see the talent that's there - speed, athleticism, size, decent hands - the pro game is meant for him.  He should be a mismatch for defenses all over the field.  His lack of consistency and poor blocking skills has cost him snaps this season.  I have said this before, Fleener left the door open for Doyle.    Aside from the drop against TN, Fleener has been good in the red zone but his inability to block LBs costs him snaps.

Agreed.. fleener isnt exactly physical.. doyle is a better blocker.. even though i see fleener make great blocks one play then the next play he gets blown by

Well it's obvious because he's soft. Judged by people sitting online typing criticisms on the Internet. It's so blatantly obvious to these folks because they know what it takes to play in the NFL.
