@stitches  Do you like any of the QBs this year?  I hear that the ones projected to be in the draft next year are a lot more top franchise-caliber QBs.  Thoughts?

All of the QBs this year are either projects or low ceiling types. I personally like Malik Willis and Desmond Ridder the best.

Willis has elite physical and athletic traits(best athlete and best arm in the class) but has some way to go when it comes to the mental part of the game - command of the offense, anticipation...

Ridder has been growing on me more and more lately. He doesn't look like an elite athlete on film but tested like one... Tested better than any of the super athletes at QB that have entered the league lately(Lamar refused to test at the combine). Everything in his tests is above the 90th percentile. And in addition, there are raving reviews of his leadership and mental qualities from interviews and blackboard work with teams. And you can see it on tape too... He does look like a QB, looks like he knows what he's doing, goes through progressions well, finds his hot reads and his outlets with consistency. The knock on him is - he looks a bit robotic with his throwing and his accuracy and placement are inconsistent. His arm strength is not great too(might be improved if he fixes some of his mechanics issues), some of his deeper balls die in the air.

About the next draft - it's very possible there will be better all around QBs in the next draft - Stroud, Young both seem to project like top 5 picks... But after that I'm not sure what will happen. For example, last year at the same time people thought Spencer Rattler would be top 5 pick this year, but instead he lost his starting job in Oklahoma and has now transferred and noone really would project him to go high anymore. My point is - we don't really know what will happen next year... Maybe some new stars emerge, maybe the ones we think highly of now falter. Anthony Richardson is another potential high pick. I personally have a dark horse for next year already - while watching Wan'dale Robinson, I kind of started falling in love with his QB - Will Levis. He looks very promising to me. He was a big recruit for Penn State, but it seems like for whatever reason he couldn't win the starting spot so he transferred and he has the look of a starting NFL QB to me - big, strong, athletic, good arm... I have to watch more of him but that's my very early favorite.

So... To sum up , it's very possible next year will give us better QB class, but that doesn't really tell us much about whether or not teams like the Vikings or the Colts will be able to get in position to draft those better QBs. Maybe what's left after the teams in the top 3 pick their QBs is players of similar uncertainty and question marks as the QBs in this current draft...

That's why I'm advocating for going to get our guy now if our GM and coach actually love any of the prospects and think they can develop him into a franchise QB in this year's draft.

Thanks! It was a bit earlier than I would of taken him, but I like that Dan did trade down and do it, rather than just take him at 42. I can work with McBride and Austin. We'll have to see what happens the rest of the draft! :)

I didn't even realize he took Austin at 56, that sly dog lmao

Was Quay Walker your guy?  You should have tried to trade with the 49ers.  It was a Commissioner's Pick and I would have traded that away.  I know you asked about a trade but you did not address me directly. I thought you were asking the whole group.

Let me know if you want to go another round. I have not heard from enough people. In the past we have gone 4 to 5 rounds.

@csmopar may be right that there is less enthusiasm for this draft. It may be because there is not a top QB.

No it’s not just lack of a top QB, it’s really a lack of star power at every position. It’s entirely possible that this draft gets only one maybe two long term starters in it and those will likely be WR. And I don’t see anyone that’s a threat at this point to light the world on fire. But that is not a given at this point either. You never know. I just have a bad feeling about this entire draft class

Thank you. I appreciate it. Ridder sounds like the best one. The mental aspect of the game is underrated. I like intelligent QBs -- not necessarily book-smart QBs but those who can quickly analyze a situation and respond appropriately. And I like those who are leaders. I would rather have a leader like Josh McCown than someone like Kirk Cousins.

He sounds a bit like Teddy Bridgewater in that his arm strength is not great and has difficulty with very deep balls. But Teddy was a leader and he was very smart. After his injury, he did not play as well. We were so excited about him during his first and second year.  He did not put up great numbers but a lot had to do with Zimmer. Zimmer wanted us to win 10-3, 14-6.

I want so much for the Vikings to get a rookie quarterback. No more trading for the Favre or Bradford or signing QBs like Cousins.  I wanted us to draft Mills last year but we drafted Mond. I was not pleased but many thought Mond would be a better pro.

Wow. That bad??  I did not follow college football at all last year. That is why I did not participate in selecting players for the Vikings or another team. This time last year, my favorite player was Patrick Surtain and I wanted my team to draft him. We got a good player in Darrisaw.

I’m judging this off historical hype trends. Even amongst the talking heads in the sports world, there just isn’t much hype around very many players like there normally is. And much much fewer articles than normal. The last time it was this “quiet”, 2013... which is ranked the second to worst class in the last 25 years

I do think I’m done for this go around too. Maybe next year more gms will be involved

Okay. While fewer people were involved, almost everyone made their picks. There were less than 10 in over 100 selections that missed their picks altogether. That is not bad.  And there was no bickering. No one was lambasting Ballard. Reich or the QB. I thought it went well.

If we have enough folks to do a quick round on Monday, I will do it. I work from home on Monday; so, I will not have to rush home to do this.

I thought that it was just me not paying attention. I wonder why that is.  Do you have a favorite player?  You seem to like David Bell.

Btw, I meant to ask anyone including @stitches what they thought of Brock Purdy. He is one of the few players I know because of this Iowa alum that I know who has talked about him. He looked okay when I saw him play a few times in 2020.

Who was drafted in 2013? I think that is the draft when the Vikes had three draft picks -- Rhodes, Sharif Floyd, and Cordarelle Patterson. I liked Floyd a lot. If that surgeon did not make that error when operating on him, he may still be playing.

Really enjoyed the experience, and I think the Jags did pretty well--was a bit worried Otton would be picked before my pick.  Can imagine how stressful it could be for a GM if they have their heart set on a particular player and have to sit and wait until they can pick--they may want to trade up, but to do so, you need a team that is prepared to trade back.  I don't have another pick until rd 6 I think, so I'm OK with whatever decision is made re continuing.

No actually I don’t. David bell I think is a WR that is better than his draft stock. The kid has good hands, just not super fast and just not that aggressive. But he manages to get open even against some better CBs. I think he’ll be a solid WR for someone. But I don’t think he’s gonna be a super YAC or home run threat kind of guy.  He’s my sleeper pick for round two. Maybe round 3 depending on how the board falls.

But I wouldn’t say he’s a favorite or a target of mine for the Colts. Honestly, there’s not a player anywhere in the draft that moves the needle one way or the other for me. Maybe that CB who hasn’t allowed a TD pass in his entire football career, high school or college, he’d be intriguing but even then, I question who he played against

Had we gone another round, Houston had two of the next three picks.  I would have added significant physicality to their defense:

107  Quay Walker, ILB, Georgia

108  Smoke Monday, S, Auburn

I selected Quay Walker for the 49ers.

Would you like to play tomorrow?

I was looking at the Vikings site and there was a thread about who is everyone's draft crush. What I got out of it:

1) Many feel this is a great draft for safeties.

2) The most popular among Vikes fans is Jordan Davis @PRnum1.  However, they do like Hamilton a lot which @VikingsFanInChennai selected for the Vikes.

3) Some wrote that Jalen Pitre was among their favorite players. He dropped in this draft. He was a Commissioners pick.

4) The only QB mentioned is Willis.

5) Jameson Williams is being compared to Megatron.

6) Cole Strange was mentioned as a late rounder.

Okay. I will put the times up today. What is a good time to start for you? I thought of starting an hour earlier, as I will be working from home.

So far you, @stitches, @Jared Cisneros (newly appointed Colts GM),@VikingsFanInChennai and @Kangaroo have expressed interest in doing a final round.

Others who may be interested in doing one more round tomorrow (let me know):

@John Hammonds, @Archer, @Clem-Dog, @SaturdayAllDay, @RNGDShobby, @PRnum1, @LV-FrontRow, @PureLuck

@WarGhost21, @Colt.45, @runthepost

(Participating via PM -- sending me a list -- is fine too.)

My original thought was for a 3-round mock draft.  After that, it just gets messy, fewer people pay attention, etc.

So you took Quay Walker already?  Hmmm....

This is the spot in the draft where all of the TE's were gonna come off.  But I already chose one.

Maybe Sam Williams, Edge, Ole Miss

On the Vikings site, they are on Week 5 or 6 now. They started earlier.

Ok, I can pick Sam Williams for the Texans with your first pick, if he is not scooped up before that. I wrote early in the thread that Williams rated in the 40s on another Big Board.

I will run the draft with whoever is here and will end it at the end of the 4th.

Note: Please post a list of your picks for each team for which you selected players. That will make it easier to compare them at a later time.

For example, @John Hammonds listed the Texans picks:

Quote

Starting to think I've had the best draft of anyone so far:

1/3  Evan Neal, LT, Alabama

1/13 Chris Olave, WR, Ohio St

I think the Jets should hire @coltsfanej as GM. :) I do like their GM Joe Douglas but the Jets need to give players time to develop. If I was the Vikes GM, I might offer the Jets mid round pick in next year's draft for Denzel Mims. He was in the coach's doghouse last year. I think Mims would play with a chip on his shoulder.

Thank you @NFLfan

One more round will help me select from the draft picks that I traded down to round 4  :D

Okay. You may want to check out the article on DN about the fans' "draft crushes".  Krauser always has great comments. I think all the players he likes have been taken except one.

You guys should go all 7 rounds, makes you do this Happy Season 4 GIF by The Simpsons, isn't Mr Irrelevant the best part of a fantasy draft?

I think we already have Mr. Irrelevant, no? @Mr. Irrelevant

Seriously, things slow down a lot after the 4th round. I think we once went all 7 but we started early, like in mid-March.

The Eagles traded the #18 overall pick for the Titans # 26, 90, 169

Jets traded pick #4 overall pick for Seahawks #9, #40, #109

After I put up the list for tomorrow, can you check to make sure that I did not miss a trade? I would appreciate it. Thank you .

I do not see any Vikings picks in the 4th. Did you get any in the trade?

Thanks for organizing and running it, NFLfan.

I can participate in another round or two... But most probably through PM again.

I believe that you will have two picks for the Packers and one for the Bengals, in the bottom half of the draft.  You can send me the PM any time before the draft or before your scheduled time to select, which I will post soon. Have a good day/night.

Colts get #56

Cowboys get 73 122 150

@NFLfan This was the trade between the Colts and Cowboys that happened. Went through a lot of this to find it lol. So ironically enough, unless I trade up, the Colts don't have a 4th round pick in this draft because it was traded away earlier. I also traded away pick 206 for the Broncos to move up, but that's irrelevant except for trade-up purposes. Letting you know for tomorrow so you can change it!
