Chuck Pagano Hire Means......peyton Is Staying

Chuck Pagano hiring today means in my opinion that Manning (if healthy and cleard to play) is staying in Indy.

Why you ask

1 all experts said to groom a rookie QB you need a offensive type of coach- Pagano is not

2 the defense needs upgrade, with a healthy Manning the offense has no major issues

Pagano is a good defensive coach, the Ravens fan board is upset of the hire by the Colts

3 Pagano-will hire a defensive assistant from Baltimore or someone he trusts and worked for in the past

to bring in the smash mouth defense that the Ravens had for the last 10 yrs

4 Clyde Christian was the only guy not fired by Irsay-hint-so the offense can stay the same for Manning

so it doesn't miss a beat in 2012

Manning and CC can groom Luck/Griffin. Though I still think the Colts can do better than CC.

I like this sentiment but again were reading into this too much. I believe there is only 1 variable that determines Peyton's future. The outcome of his evaluation. Irsay and Grigson are just hoping for the best, planning for the worse.

This hire can work with Manning or without.

Dude if we have both Manning and Luck on the roster we will have ZERO money to go after players to improve this defense which Pagano will want to do. We are rebuilding, and going to the future with Luck, and will sign an impact FA or 2.

Some very good, sound reasons there. Just one question... what happens if Manning can't play because the nerve never regenerates?

Or we are reloading our defense by giving Pagano several high draft picks to use on the defense from trading the #1 pick...

I'm not so sure anymore, I have been on this the past week. Looking frantically for reasons or the possibility of Manning staying, but I can't find any. If anything, it shows they are heading in a more defensive direction overall. Manning really doesn't sound like a guy who's comfortable with these changes, and doesn't sound like he feels he's coming back.

Disregarding the thread title for a minute because it's premature as is the rest of the what-if talk prior to March 8th......

I like the HC hire. He's got strong experience in all the areas we need the most help over the past decade: Defensive Coordinator, Secondary, Special Teams, LBs.

This backs-up Irsay's presser stating more balance and attention to defense. Excellent.

This isn't entirely true. With Manning and Luck on the roster, the Colts would have about as much money tied up in the QB position as they did this year with Manning, Painter, Dan O, and Collins.

I think to the Colts can do better than Christiansen. I could easily see them going after the hottest OC that is out there to develop Luck!

Then the team declines to make good on the $28 million payment, thank Peyton for being a great Colt, releases him and move on and draft a new QB for a new era of Colts football.

Don't despair! This hire is flexible to Manning's situation. Not being so QB or offensively minded will take pressure off Manning and Luck/RG3.

You know he did say healthy in the post... so that means that Peyton is healthy in his scenario.

That's nice but that negates reasons #1 and #4

Luck and Manning would cost somewhere in the low $20 million cap hit. Peyton has a $17 million cap hit, and Cam Newton, on the new rookie contracts, cost the Panthers $4 million. That leaves the team with >$100 million to play with? I don't know the cap space of the Colts.

Well what if we cut Manning and Luck turns out unlucky? Then we are back in the same boat as when Manning was injured and no reliable QB! We will keep Manning and Luck or some other rookie QB that Grigson has scouted.

It could be that while he may be uncomfortable with the changes (who is?), that ESPN is blowing it way out of proportion. No one likes uncertainty. After Manning and Irsay talk, they will work out what's happening. It's like getting a new boss. No one likes it.

In terms of the team, I'd like to see Manning stay for a year or two, mentor Luck, and retire as a Colt. Manning in another uniform would be an abomination.

Good point...

Hey I could be wrong , just throwing my 2 cents out like everyone else ( Shef, Mort, Berman, Ditka and so on)

MAnning isn't Grigson's decision. I don't think he is going anywhere if he is healthy. Thats like throwing away and old $1000 bill for a newly printed $100. Yes we are rebuilding but honestly I see some money cleared up in the D to make room for new, drafted players.

According to Adam, Steve and everyone at ESPN.. they KNOW hes done in Indy. REALLY??

I really hate ESPN and they are always wrong, go figure.

Yep. According to just about everyone at ESPN, Manning has his bags packed and is deciding where he wants to go.

I think I've heard 6 teams. Today they talked about him going to SF so he can win SBs. Miami, NY, Skins, Jets, even Houston was mentioned.

The more they talk, the more they prove they know nothing.

I'm interested in how much say Pagano is going to have in the Draft in free agency. I know I'm in the minority here, but I wish we wouldn't get Luck if Peyton is healthy. I think there are way too many holes in the defense. Not to mention the fact that we need a tackle and a center and possibly a wide receiver, we could benefit from not taking Luck. I think a good defense could really cover up a lot of things

You do realize that Collins/Orlovski/Painter together made more this past season than Luck will make next year, right? And you do realize that we will have more than one QB on our roster, right?

This means nothing about pm at all. We have needed help on d for a long time and Irsay said the d was going to be an important issue this offseason. Peyton will NOT be s colt next year.

I dont know how you can say that peyton wont be a colt next year when we dont even know what his health status is going to be. Irsay has clearly said several times that if peyton is healthy he WILL be a colt next year. I dont think any of us are gonna know that answer until it gets closer to march 8th!

    • I’m not a religious person, but since you’re an educator I think you’re doing Gods work!   In these crazy insane times we’re all living in you’re doing one of the toughest jobs on earth.  And you’re teaching perhaps the most difficult generation to deal with.     From a distance it feels like you’re being very unfair to you.  I’m hoping in time you’ll see yourself in a completely different light.    Someone highly thought of.  A leader in the community.  A protector of young minds.   I couldn’t admire a teacher more.
    • You are too self-deprecating. You are one of the most respected and bright members here. You should never feel that you are failing. I'm sure your wife and children don't feel that way.  Indiana does not pay teachers what they deserve. But money is overrated. Having good morals and good character should be valued a lot more. JMO.
    • They make a heck of a lot more money than I do. Even those on the practice squad are making life changing money.    To be completely honest, as an educator I feel more like trash nowadays. One of those moments where I feel like I’m failing as a man, a husband, a father and a teacher. I would absolutely never consider an honest working NFL player as trash.
    • Food for thought… Once again, you continue to be your own worst enemy.     The Colts overall TE room is loaded with young players most of whom have had very little playing time for a variety of reasons.   So if you want to say the room might not be ranked high, that’s fair.    But you don’t say that.  You call them “trash”.  Why you feel that’s appropriate is a mystery.   Whenever you try the internet tough guy approach it typically blows up on you.     No one is trash.     You ignore the last three years and the QB and HC carousel the Colts have dealt with.  All of which has impacted the Colts weapons, especially the TE’s.   Ballard has publicly talked about how promising he thinks his TE room might be.   Woods, Granson, Ogletree, Mallory and MAC.    Only MAC is questionable and that’s because the salary hasn’t matched expectations.  But the first four?   All are promising.   They’re just young and looking for opportunity.  But they are NOT trash.     There’s a difference.
    • Some of the coaches?   That sounds plural to me.   To the best of my knowledge the focus in this community has only been on one coach who may not be maximizing the players the Colts have.   And that’s the defensive coordinator.  He’s been a hot topic of conversation.  But I’m not aware of any other coach being viewed in a negative light.
