Why Did Moncrief Fall So Far in the Draft?

He was the 14th WR selected in the draft.

I know it was a very deep group of talent at the position this year, but I don't watch much college ball so I was wondering what the knocks on him were coming out of college? He is big, fast and appears to have good hands from what we've seen in his limited game time.

His dress game is also on point;

No it doesn't. Saying the draft was deep does not answer my question.

Was it his hands? Route running? Ability to pick up the playbook? etc.

Saying he fell because the draft was deep gives no information whatsoever.

I'll check out the article you posted, hopefully for a real answer.

Anybody know how the WRs taken ahead of him are doing?

Most of them are doing terrific. Better than Moncrief. Watkins, Evans, Beckaham JR., Brandin Cooks (before IR), Kelvin Benjamin, Marquise Lee, Jordan Matthews, Davante Adams, Allen Robinson (before IR), and Jarvis Landry all went before Moncrief and all have made great plays.

I have read the article, and it was good, thank you.

Still, your initial response of, "because it was a deep draft" wasn't particularly helpful.

Well, it may not be the most helpful, but it is a valid answer.  The more competition there is, the harder it will be to get into the first round, second round, etc.  While there's this philosophy that you draft the best player available, that doesnt' mean teams won't forego the 33rd prospect overall to take the 35th prospect overall that fills a bigger need.  When you got that many good receivers in the draft, it turns a second round prospect into a 3rd.  Just the nature of hte beast.

But the artile gives at least some insight as to why he ranked where he did amongst other WRs

Not sure I understand how the Colts picking him at 90 is a reason for his fall in the draft.

Badly punctuated by me. Baically I was say that it was a very deep draft at WR and 11 going in the first 89 picks is way more than what would be a normal amount. So the fact that 11 wre taken before him would be my answer . Now if someone wants to say that he was rated ahead of many of those 11 .. then yes .. why did he drop ?

Yeah, I understand that teams draft for their own needs rather than picking the best best players.

I was wondering what made the other WRs picked before him seem more valuable. Your article helped answer that question.

He came out early to help his family. He would be a first rounder this year. He is raw as a player that's why. He still has tons of routes to learn. I'll say this though we were "LUCKY" yet again. Have to see him up against better corners. He is big, strong and fast. Because of playing time it looks like the others are doing better. I'd have to disagree with that. Haven't really heard to much about the guys in front of him besides Evans.

A few are doing really good.

Some guy called Huff plays for the Eagles and hasn't done anything, nor has Latimer for the Broncos, but obviously their offense is stacked.

lmao our offense is stack and moncreif still gets it done

Many reasons he was younger than some so less experience didn't run all the routes was known to body catch . Put that with maybe the deepest draft class in history and a lot of good receivers that were in FA made him drop to us . Very happy it went down that way he could go down as the steal of the draft .

TY was a third rounder...

Marcus Colston was a sixth rounder

Wes Welker, Eric Decker, and on and on ..    NFL scouts don't know as much as they think they do.   It is nothing more than a human crap shoot.

Go back and do the 12 draft over and Luck, Allen, and TY would all be top 15 picks.   That draft could go down as an ALL TIME great draft for the team.

Be honest when answering this rather than just being a homer, but who do you think will be the top 3 WRs from this draft class when it's all said and done?

Mine are in no particular order...

Jordan Matthews(He will have a good young QB and offensive minded HC for a while, and he's a very smart and quality route running WR with size)

Donte Moncrief(He has a stud QB throwing to him for many years, and has the size, speed combo that you look for in a #1 WR)

Sammy Watkins(He is too talented to not be listed on here, and I feel like Buffalo will be featuring him and will eventually find their franchise QB)

Considering he was a receiver for Ole Miss he was never given a chance to really shine, and together with a few other issues he fell to the Colts... and I'm glad he did. I also think getting to learn from a guy like Reggie will have a huge payoff as well when it comes to his hands. In the end he may very well be the biggest pickup in the draft for us. A true partner to T.Y. Hilton who was also a big draft pick for us.

    • The Colts handed Taylor a boat load of money which is unheard for a running back in today’s NFL.  You don’t do that and take him off the field in crucial situations for Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson.  Shane has done just that in two of the last three games he’s coached.  Not playing maybe your best offensive weapon for a whole fourth quarter is criminal.  Shane is trying to be too cute and over thinking things trying to fool other teams and it’s not working in the slightest.  Play your best players at the most critical points of games.  That’s why you paid them.
    • People come up with the strangest over reactions ever when the Colts lose.
    • I agree 100 Ballard time is up , him and Bradley. You can preach accountability and retain Bradley another year….Ballard loves to say guys just need to hit the layup… he should take his own advice we all knew we needed help in the secondary this year no moves, we all knew we needed help last year at corner , oline year before. I talking about obvious weaknesses media calls him out on it year after year and he plays it off like he smarter than everyone then admit mistakes at the end of year and does the same thing. Bradley doesn’t make any adjustment like he runs what he runs and that it
    • To be honest this is malpractice by Ballard ….. like I know they think us fans are stupid but some of us played sports , coached sports , watched sports etc… we know what we are seeing like everyone knew we needed depth in the second. But Ballard doesn’t bring vets in and makes guys compete for a job he hands them to players he thinks are nice people a deserve a shot. Ala Pinter, NFL is a league where you get what you earn ,you eat what you kill , not what you deserve. Ballard need to take a hard look at him self at look at how other teams that win are built. We need speed at the corner position and a scheme shift. Like no HC under Ballard has been able to pick they DC he normally has one before they get hired and they retain Ballard guy
