It’s week two of free agency not the start of training camp.  Give it time.

Also, I know people don’t want to hear this but I don’t think Ballard feels the corner room is as bad as some think.  They have three young corners they like plus Kenny.  Yes safety needs work but that could also be addressed in the draft.

Also, maybe they did kick the tires on Sneed and decided yep nope.  It will take a little time to recalibrate from that and adjust their focus.

Well you have Flowers returning ,an undrafted player ,who is coming back from a severe injury.  Jones a 7th rd pick who played because Flowers couldn’t play and had more bad days than good and Brent’s a second round pick who missed a number of games also with injuries which continues a history of injuries in college.  Brent’s is the only player who showed promise last year.  I think Ballard would be risking the season if he just rolled with those three considering the quarterbacks we will be facing.  The safety room isn’t a ball of fire right now either.  Plenty of time left.  Ballard has some work to do I would think.

What makes you think that Ballard is all that interested in this upcoming season?

There are several threads on reddit with a lot of people acting like the team should have gotten this done no matter what.

As if the asking price didnt matter and CB blew it big time.

Thats why i posted some of the comments that i did.  The internet really went wild over this.

lol doug. what?

We are not all in for the SB right now, as in spare no expense and over pay to fill needs.

To me the secondary is probably not acceptable right now today either though

First it doesn’t matter where you were drafted if you can play.  New England didn’t go well that Brady kid had a really good season and won the Super Bowl but he was taken in the sixth round so we better stick with Bledsoe who was taken first overall.

Flowers had a very good season going until he got hurt.  He should be healthy this year and the Colts have said from the start they thought he could develop into a really good corner for them.

Then when Jones got in there he played very well according to just about everyone here.  Go back and look at the post game threads if you don’t believe me.  He was the unsung hero of the secondary most of the season.

Brents shows a lot of promise and there is no reason to think he wouldn’t make a jump going into his second year.

Then there is Kenny Moore who is maybe the best slot corner in the league.

While I have no problem adding another body to the secondary, rather it’s in free agency or the draft, the corner room is hardly bare like some are making it out to be.  To be honest I am much more concerned about safety than I am corner.

Yeah I did and he was probably exaggerating.  I spend too much time on reddit myself and have read a lot of extreme takes.

Not referring to doug specifically but too many people out there are acting like you are either all in all the time or you dont care.  I do think they care but they are not doing everything imaginable to go all in at the moment.

Ballard better get a FA CB still. There are a few guys still out there. I don't care if it's Sneed, but going young again at CB with our first rounder would be dumb. Primarily because if we go DB in the first, we are relying on his mid round picks for what he himself labeled a concern on the roster of 'explosive' playmakers. I don't trust that he just won't pick Alec Pierce v2 if that's his only choice, an athletic prospect who can run one route well... AR needs a more talented receiving room (WR/TE) if we want to see him have to rely on his feet less. Most great young QBs in this league have been paired up with a great receiver early on in their career. The Colts don't have that yet, and it would be stupid if they don't take advantage of a draft that have multiple potential blue chip receiving threats at the top of the draft...

I'm okay with whatever happens though. If Ballard wants to play it safe with 'his guys', and he trades down and drafts a CB, he doesn't hold the excuse anymore of not having his franchise QB. It's put up or shut up now and if his philosophy fails again, get him out of here.

After starting like 4-5 games (can't remember the exact timeframe), Jones was rated as one of the top rookie CBs and well among all CBs. He definitely had some rough spots, but there were a lot of good things there as well. I'd like to add a veteran CB and S, but I'm rather bullish on the CBs we already have (besides Baker Jr).

The price generally doesn't matter too much if it's a couple million higher as we can do restructures, extensions, and cuts to make up for it. For me, the only excuses not to get the deal done are if the draft capital is overwhelming (a 1st rounder+), or if Sneed just said no. If the difference is a 3-year deal to a 4-year deal, then that's on Ballard for being stubborn.

Ballard should be under scrutiny for this, as he would have not only not gotten the deal done (if we miss out on Sneed), but also wasting valuable time in FA and missing out on possible players. We'll probably never hear on which specific players we missed out while going after Sneed, but there were some.

We already saw what our secondary is capable of doing. Or not doing, as it would be.

Running it back is not exactly a bright prospect, and wouldn’t you know what it seems Ballard is fine with if they didn’t go after Sneed, or seemingly anyone else.

Its “I like the guys we’ve got at WR” all over again.

As we still need a WR who can make any kind of impact in the first or second round of this draft just two years after the last time we spent our first draft pick on a WR.

The pattern is there, you just have to pick up on it.

I think his asking price and injury history made the Colts decide to move on from him and he was told last week, hence him unfollowing the Colts on twitter.  It’s telling the Colts pretty much had media day with all their own they kept and nothing was done with Blackmon.

The money does matter and like it or not there is no real reason for this team to over pay right now.  We are not going all in for the SB because that doesnt actually make sense

We dont know what we have at QB and that affects this.

Is this team better today than it was in December?

That is interesting.  Is Flacco better than Minshew?

Weird that it comes down to the backup QB but that was a big deal last year.

This next season?  Ballrd gets judged on that?  By whom?

I'd think he'd be interested in doing what it takes to build a SB team within the next 4 years, not just a team that wins the Division or a Wild Card this season.  I don't think that getting a Sneed and maximizing the cap gets us anywhere near the SB this coming season.   Maybe the Division.  Maybe.

Its like everybody thinks AR is as good as Stroud already, and that Ballard should be building the Colts now as urgently as the Texans are.

How can it be?

A backup DT and Joe Flacco are our additions.

And I don’t want to sit here and muse whether or not Joe * Flacco makes this team better than it was 3 months ago because his impact needs to be as close to nil as possible. We drafted a guy for that very reason.

It just feels like I'm having the exact same thoughts and feelings about what's happening with the Colts and Ballard's approach every single year. There hasn't been a single season since... 2020 when I felt like... "oh we got better this off-season... nice" :dunno:

Pretty much the only hope is that Ballard has another 2018 type of draft and that's where the strengthening of the team comes from... but it's just so rare for rookies to be really great positive contributors... it's hard to be optimistic about it... at least in the immediate.

Id sure like to see us bring in a pass rusher. Haven’t seen much talk about it but 9.5 sacks being the leader in the clubhouse with buck and Grover on the inside feels almost criminal. How many of those are a result of buck and Grover shoving lineman back in the qbs face and being clean up sacks? I’d have to bet 2-3 which would put our leader on the outside at 6.5 or 7.5. That’s what you call terrible.

From what I've read from Stephen Holder, we tried for Sneed, didn't get him, and repaid our guys.

Im assuming we get a couple more FA, maybe even 1 or 2 after the draft. But cheap budget guys, as Ballard has done for the last half-decade. So I think Ballard is doing what you want him to do, playing for the accumulation of wins over multiple seasons.

it would be dishonest to ignore the fact that his seat is warming up. if he missed on AR there's a good chance he's gone. ofc that has yet to be seen. but this season is important for him

Well there is the draft.

And there is the potential that Richardson is who they thought, which if it turns out to be true, will make them better.

And free agency is not over.

On the flip side, are we sure that the teams that signed all those free agents are better than they were last year?

Not trying to battle with you here - but the roster building is not done yet.
