In pregame during warmups they establish a range they feel comfortable kicking at, if it is within that range you have to trust your kicker especially to take the lead. You can't decide if a play was good or not from hindsight.

if gay was playing at a elite level i would agree .   the problem is gay has been bad the last couple weeks tons of misses , so attempting a 57 yard kick is a head scratcher

No, I understand that, but it’s frustrating when the other guy who makes much less can nail a 50+ yarder. I’m fine with Gay, he’s a good kicker, but it’s hard to be too confident in him over 50.

It’s hard to be too confident with any kicker from 57.  There is a huge difference in 51 vs 57 too.
