Gonzo Gone! No Big Surprise At All

Can't find the link. But this was from the Indianapolis Star Sports FB page statues.

Often-injured WR Anthony Gonzalez won't be back with the Colts next season. The five-year veteran received a call from the team on Friday, thanking him for his service but informing him he wouldn't be offered a new contract. "It's a business. First and foremost and always, it's a business. I mean it's a sport and everything, but it always comes back to being a business," said Gonzalez.

I saw it just now. Not surprising.

Sadly, if we kept him he'd be a starter.

For how many games?

It's unfortunate to see him go, but it is the best decision. He hasn't shown he can stay healthy. I wouldn't have been upset to see him stay on a very low cap hit contract, but I guess the new regime doesn't think he deserves to stay. Unfortunate because at the start of the year, he was really determined to get his starting position back

I'm not sure what the real story was on him. He appeared to be healthy most of last season but rarely got in games. And when he was in he wasn't used.

It will be interesting to see if he has a career elsewhere.

We will need to get a solid WR.

Yeah, I won't be surprised if they get Luck a playmate in the 2nd round so they can grow together ala Peyton/Marvin.

We have so many needs, you could make an argument for just about any position except QB at that pick, but the fans need something to get excited about on a team that currently has no playmakers under contract.

Just got the news, good to see him gone. He just takes up cap space and room on the roster. He gets injured too much now and he's been useless. Have fun in Oakland Gonzo! That's where I think he goes.

If the players who missed games due to injury survive injuries better under the strength and conditioning regimen of a different team, what would we then think about that? Just throwing it out there.

IMO players like Addai and Gonzo were just milking injuries for a easy paycheck.. I am not sad one bit to see either of them gone.

Three great reasons to cut Gonzo:

1.) Injury prone.

2.) Paying him 1st round money.

3.) Must develop new chemistry with a new QB, so may as well go with new WR's as well.

The decision makes perfect sense to me. I like this decision even better than dropping Curtis Painter. At least Painter played and didn't cost so much!

Keep it up Grigson!!! Nice job of cutting WR Gonzo another injury prone player. It's getting to the point that no Chris or Bill Polian drafted player will be on the active roster. Good!!! It's about time we clearly the decks once & for all.

Technically, he was not cut. He played out his 5-year contract with the Colts, and the team opted not to re-sign him to a new contract.

No release was issued, no dead cap space to worry about.

I am just reminded of how in 5 years, no one drafted by Matt Millen was around in the roster put together by the now Lions GM Martin Mayhew. Now, the Lions are contending.

But I would have never thought I would use Matt Millen and Bill Polian in the same sentence a few years ago w.r.t a similar situation. Hopefully, the purge is limited to only the ones not providing value :).

I would give him midway through the 3rd quarter, game one.

It would also then make you wonder "what if we had retained Clark or Addai under a new fitness regimen", that is where I was going with it.

D. Clark age 33 for the upcoming season

J. Addai age 30 for the upcoming season

In the case of the above 2, maybe they would be performing as if they were reaching their prime instead of how they performed in the last 2 years. For both these players, based on their recent performances, I see them as being passed their prime, and getting paid as if they were reaching their prime.

    • In Indiana you can get a real nice 3 bedroom, 2 full bathrooms/showers/nice Kitchen/big living room house for 200,000 in a decent neighborhood. Where do you live NY or Cali , in one of the those states I guess it would be about 600,000 to afford anything like I talked about. I could never live in either of those states. If someone in NY moved here, they would be rich.
    • Smith has been having a hard time staying healthy the last few years and he's due 19 mil next season with no dead cap to cut him.
    • Well they replaced Strausser with Sparano which solved a problem.
    • I disagree about Smith.  He’s an absolute road grader as a run blocker. He’s graded as one of the best in that category.  His pass blocking was around 71 last year. Considering the need for knee surgery that’s pretty good considering the DE’s they went up against last year.    Fries was solid last year. He plays with a mean streak and through the whistle. Fries was better last year than Glowinski was as a Colt in my opinion. I don’t see any reason Fries wouldn’t continue to improve. He’s an ascending player.    I hope the Colts hit on drafting Kelly’s replacement.  It was good that he had a bounce back year after 2+ sub par years. However, they can’t pay everyone and having a center with a $14 million cap hit is too much.    You can’t pay everyone. It seems like the Colts have a plan in place to replace Kelly and/or Fries after this season but I expect the Colts oline to be even more consistent this year with a healthy Smith and a QB who is willing to stay in a clean  pocket.  I also feel like the depth is there to handle injuries.
    • One correction here.  The NFL has loosened the restrictions on veterans.  Six of the players have zero restrictions on how many NFL games a player has accrued.
