Remember Booger McFarland.

Cato June

Mike Peterson

Jerry Hughes

Tim Jennings

Antione Bethea

Insert a half dozen other LB that led the league in tackling and had near Pro Bowl years, but we released immediately following their stellar seasons.

Seems like we not only refuse to sign anybody in FA that is a premier player, we let go of Players as soon as they start playing well on defense.

Remember we Signed Rob Morris And The Duck to huge Contracts.

We let go of a 6-6 safety that ran a 4.4 yard dash to give his often injured contour part a gigantic contract.

But, remember we had Dwight Freeney, and Robert Mathis Booger McFarland and Bob Sanders on the same field. We won a superbowl, with relative ease.

Do you remember how long colts fans begged for a huge 3-4 gap defender like McFarland before we got him, in the end of his career.

10 years. 10 YEARS. A FRIGGIN DECADE.

What the hell is wrong with these coaches and gm.

Why did they think they could just ignore the O-Line AND the D-Line.

I can see one, but not both.

You cant fix the D-Line and O-Line through the draft only. especially in a 1 dimensional offense with no running game.

How many years in the last 20 have we seen the worst QB put up 90+ passer rattings.

How many out of 20 have we seen mediocre running back run directly up the middle of the field for 8 yards without before being touched.

Like 18 out of 20, 19.

I don't live in Indy, but the problems we have are not that we can't but we don't try to take risk, except for a offensive game plan centered around post routes that take 5 seconds to develop, behind a O-Line that can only block for 2.

Do you realize the line was so bad, Andrew Luck suffered internal organ damage.

Do any of you realize how many opportunities were squandered because of management.

GET YOU ISH TOGETHER. GET YOUR ACCOUNTANTS, AND GET AT LEAST 1 GOOD PLAYER ON THE D-LINE, 1 ON THE OLINE AND 1 CORNER. IN THE NEXT 2 YEARS. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

McFarland tipped the scales for the Colts that year.

I was hoping they'd get a Pass Rush/OLB in FA this year (I realize they're hard to get and that we wouldn't have gotten Miller fom Denver).  I wanted Kruger after he was let go from Cleveland.  Only a short-term upgrade but an upgrade nonetheless.

I get the frustration, but I'd say the Colts, especially spanning the time frame you've outlined in the OP, have hit more than missed in all three categories - draft, free agency, and player retention.  The wins and success show that.  The other thing to consider is, for all the Colts fans longing for some dynamic middle linebacker, or nose tackle, other teams looks at the Colts and shake their heads in disbelief at our great fortune when it comes to quarterbacks.  If it were easy to have 53 all-pros, and be able to re-sign them all when contracts come due, it would be a boring game.

Uh ok...... Not sure what else you are hoping to accomplish here but venting OP, which is fine...... but remember, they TRADED for Booger only after Cory Simon, who they signed to a BIG contract prior.... didn't work out

And Montae Reagor got injured non-football.

and nobody wanted a 3-4 gap defender for the Tampa 2 defense the colts were running, and that's not what Booger McFarland was.  I'm assuming you meant a quality 3tech DT.

He was a big fat, hard to move or get around DT. That's all that mattered, that's what we needed, that's what we got, and we got a SB out of it.

Put the keyboard away buddy

Why don't you tell the 50 other dudes in the forum at the time, who were saying those exact words "We need a Big Fat 3 tech DT or NT"

And we got em, we won a superbowl. Not just because of him now, but our Run Defense was definitely Markedly improved because of him.

But you want me to put my keyboard down.

Our coaches gameplan around our weaknesses. Long developing routes with a bad o-line. They never changed it, but the o-line did improve, hence an improvement of our passing game. If our o-line does well, our gameplan will workout pretty good next year. Our WR aren't too scary to play West Coast offense now an then are they, I know they are on the Skinny side.

But my point is, unless they expect the Colts O to go back in time to like 2007 where you can lob up 3 TD a game consistently, hitting post routes and streaks for 40 yard TD, they need to change up their approach to next season.

Because if you notice, THIS YEAR, CB HAVE JUST AS MANY INTERCEPTIONS AS WR HAVE TD. NOT TO MANY DOUBLE DIGIT TD RECIEVER THIS YEAR RIGHT. ARE YOU NOTICING THE CB IN THE LEAUGE ARE GETTING WAAAAAAAAAY BETTER.

We may need to start teaching dorset and Hilton to get ready for some quick hitches. If we can implement that, and develop Lucks short game with a little west coast offense mixed in, it would completely confuse the defense, and they may actually abandon blitzing, like they did in 07, when defense feared our offense.

Our personell on offense is there, we are a 1 Guard away from having a steller O-line depending on the rookies development through the off season.

We just have to mix it up with the passes. We will be okay with our gameplan on offense if the o-line works out well like it has, but if it doesn't we need to work on some west coast.

Cuz if we don't....

LUCK WONT LAST ANOTHER 5 YEARS IN THIS LEAGUE. HE GETS HIT MORE THAN ANYBODY.

In spite of the incoherent ramblings, he makes several good points.

I agree that we're pretty close to being a very good team on offense.  But they should be running more of a west coast offense to take advantage of the quick twitch receivers, and account for a mediocre line.

On defense, it's hard to game plan when you only have one or two 'win' positions and no pass rush.

Of course, this is news to no one.

The reason Polian was never able to find the DT needed to run the Tampa 2 was because there was none available...yes...for over a decade, in either the draft or FA.  Warren Sapp made Tampa Bay what it was and Tommie Harris made the Chicago Bears, as well as Urlacher.  All three were top ten picks, and the Colts never sniffed the top ten under Polian except for 1 year, when they drafted Freeney at 11.

Gap shooting DTs are top 20 if not 15 picks, and the Colts haven't drafted that high but two times in about 20 years...Freeney, then Luck.

Two times in 20 years.  Almost every year its been pick 22 or higher...for about 20 years.

Booger was had for a 2nd round pick simply because he was nearing the end of his career.  Tampa held on to him before that.

Most of the players listed were not worth holding on to.  We held on to Freeney, Mathis, and Sanders until the time was right to let them go.

This is why they need him to fire Pagano and bring in a coach like Shannahan who emphasizes the short passing game. You do that and draft Dalvin Cook who excels at catching out of the backfield, you'd have a top tier offense.

The Colts are far away from being a Super Bowl contender but aren't that far away from being at least a Packers level team. If I had to put it into numbers, I'd say we're 1-2 successful offseasons from being a consistently good team, but we're a HC and at least 3 seasons from being an elite team that can win it all.

Hey all, I've removed a post from this thread because of EXCESSIVE FORMATTING

Please note, use formatting judiciously.  Don't type in all caps and don't post in giant fonts.  NOBODY LIKES IT and it's even in our rules that you should not do this.

Also DON"T TAKE SHOTS AT EVERyONE ON THE BOARD

I'm not on the "Fire Pagano" bandwagon.  I think he's a decent coach, except for Belichick you could find fault with every coach in the league.  McCarthy has had arguably the best QB in the league and hasn't been to a SB in 5 years.  Lewis has had some of the best rosters and hasn't won a playoff game.  Carroll?  Yeah, just run the ball.

No one, except the Patriots, have been consistently great year after year.  And I'm pretty sure both Tom and Bill are going to owe Ole Scratch something when their days are done.

But seriously, I know Pagano has made some bad calls.  What coach hasn't?  But what coaches in the NFL got as much out of such a bad roster?

Do you want me to rephrase it, or are you satisfied with your passively insulting Gif image?

I do find that gif satisfying, but don't let that stop you from continuing your very passionate rant.

In all seriousness, I just don't understand what your point is. Set aside anything that I might disagree with or think is inaccurate in your posts, what are you arguing? What do you want the Colts to do?

Basically I'm saying this.

1. Coaches, if your not going to be aggressive and getting a premier corner or olineman or de then see step 2.

2. Coach down your weaknesses (oline, run defense, run offense, dropped passes, frequent injuries in the secondary) and exploit your very few positives (setting the edge on the d line for example) or step 3.

3. Completely overhaul your offensive gameplan to completely avoid the weaknesses you now currently still have.

All this is to avoid step 4.

4. Do the same crap that doesn't work, year after year after year after year.

Very well, I agree with you. Except, I think they should do 1, 2 and 3. Improve your roster however you can, and coaching should minimize weaknesses and maximize strengths.

Alot of good points were said and few of them I have said myself our offensive gameplan is not what it should be....we have 2 very fast wr's and use them wrong rarely any slant routes are called and not enough quick hitch routes I mean the deep ball won't work all the time chud should realize that

Jerry Hughes was terrible the whole time he was a Colt.. Very disappointing 1st round draft pick

Nah his first season in the 3/4 with us was a sign but I'm guessing it was too late for him to get the team to keep him

    • Like I said blatantly throwing to a covered receiver is *ic, you continue to mention the likes of Marvin, Reggie etc. what did all those guys have in common? You can’t Double cover them all, Hence one being open. Which you throw to them, why? Because they’re open. These are all NFL players , yes some are better than others but they are Professionals at the end of the day and have made a NFL roster. You’re paid to catch a ball regardless if the game is on the line or not each catch should feel routine no different than the next.
    • Yep, people forget Peyton threw to the likes of Bryan Fletcher in a critical AFCCG and even a defensive lineman Dan Klecko, lol     Brady made a career around seasonal WRs in David Patten, Deion Branch etc. Drew Brees spread it around too. Mahomes has been doing that too since he lost Tyreek Hill.
    • Just curious, other than height, weight, speed, and ball velocity; do we know how AR measured in other athletic drills?  3 cone, shuttle, bench press, etc.  He moves like a guy who might not score very high on those others.  JMO.   Not that I would expect a QB to do those others drills.  Its just that this idea of his athleticism we have maybe comes from our imagination and hope rather than anything substantial.  Its like because he scores a 98th percentile on HWS, and throwing distance, we expect a 98th percentile for explosion and body control to come with it.
    • I wonder what happened with Will Fries for his improvement, would sure love to hear it. Is it more NFL strength training along with knowledge of the same schemes? What do you think?
    • No to Smith being gone. Yes to Kelly being gone. Smith, when healthy, is one of the Top 10 RTs in the league, I still believe that.
