I am not in the habit of following the antics of players not on my team,  but if I read between the lines in this article, or just read it straight forward  I am to understand Blount was a really good RB with the Patriots, and was let go on a free-agency blunder, and picked up by the Steelers, where he performed not-so-good, had some off-field trouble and even left the field early at his last game as a Steeler, which led to him being released, and then by some miracle picked up by the Patriots 24 hours later?

I don't know why anyone finds any of that suspicious.

Oh good Lord. This has gotten beyond pathetic.

The Steelers signed Blount to a contract that was something in the range of $4M for two years. The Patriots wanted to retain him this offseason but Pittsburgh outbid them.

When he was cut by the Steelers, he cleared waivers. Every NFL team had a chance to pick up his deal and elected not to.

Ridley was on IR by then. Jonas Gray had just run all over the Colts but the Patriots had Vereen (3rd down back), Brandon Bolden, and James White on the roster. So they clearly needed someone.

Blount was signed for two years and around $1.7M.

So if the NFL watching world has gotten so crazy that everything the Patriots do MUST be shady, that means you're accepting:

1. That somehow they manipulated all 31 teams into NOT picking Blount up when he was on waivers, and...

2. That Blount orchestrated this with the Pats and took a 50% pay cut in the process...

Of course he knew the Patriots would be there. They wanted him back and had lost Ridley.

But hey it's New England, so... must be something illegal, right?!

You know what, that is not a bad thing.  No illegal formations though OK? HA HA!

Hahha no no no...and when I say I still 'play with'...well that's a loose term. I'm an architect so I get a kick out of all the new Architecture and Landmark sets. I just build em and let em sit there.

The above is true and I don't have a clue if there was any conversation between Blount and the Pats. What you leave out is a couple of facts that make this possible. I'll leave out the perception of him appearing to be guilty of this during the interview. Heck that could be just one guys opinion.

1) I would think that only teams in contention that needed a RB would bother to even look at picking him up at his age and salary. Pretty late in the year to bother with a guy like this unless you a  legit need and post season aspirations.

2) I could say 2 and 3 but I'll summarize the whole issue here. It's perfectly logical for the Pats to let him know he had a landing spot when and if he could "talk" his way into being cut by the Steelers. He would receive the same money as the contract goes over to the Pats.. no ? So please explain this 50% pay cut he took ? By my figures , it's a 0 % pay cut. The other part of this is teams will stay away from guys that + and moan like he did. So the likelihood that he would fall to the Pats is way more probable than you have it laid out.

Seems a little strange that he told Piittsbirgh to take a hike just when the Pats needed a RB. His contract was not guaranteed , so if no one picked him up , he would lose the rest of his years pay. In all fairness ( I tell it like it is) , that's not a real issue because he wasn't getting much more than league minimum when you subtract the 250K bonus he already received from Pitt . but the danger is the very real possibility that no one would bother to sign him after he cleared waivers.

So the above needs to be added to your post and then we have the total picture. Then if your buddies want to chuckle at how stupid this is , we at least have the rest of "possible " story . We also needed to address the 50% pay cut you have him taking.

I can't wait until my son (2) is old enough for Legos... anything to recapture my lost youth.  ;)

Careful what you wish for...I feel like I would have enough money to go to the Superbowl every year if I put all the money away that I have spent on Legos over the years!

It's very simple... I'm not sure why you're questioning me on that.

His deal in Pittsburgh was 2 years, $3.85 million.

His deal in NE is 2 years, $1.73 million.

He's 28. I'm sure teams shied away from his salary (and not his age) when he cleared waivers, because if you pick up a guy on waivers, you assume responsibility for the remainder of his contract.

If Blount shot his way out of Pittsburgh, he had to know it was going to cost him a couple million.

So he clears waivers and can then sign with whichever team he wants, right? Like I said before, the Patriots lost Ridley, and aside from Vereen had very little experience in their RB group. Just Vereen, Bolden (special teams player, mostly), Jonas Gray (as you know the Indy game was his first significant NFL action, and possibly his last), and James White (rookie 3rd down back).

I would think this type of conversation happens often between any NFL player and coach:

PLAYER: "Hey coach, (team name here) offered me 2 years and $3.85 million."

COACH: "Well we're not going to match that... we've liked having you here, but that's not what we had in mind for money. Good luck to you, you've worked hard here so if it doesn't work out and you'd ever like to come back, we'll be here."

PLAYER: "Thanks, coach."

So Blount obviously knew Ridley had gotten hurt. The Patriots needed a power back. No one expected Jonas Gray to go on a tear and treat the rest of the NFL like he treated the Colts. But they didn't want to pay Blount the amount he was going to get on his Steelers deal. So he gets his freedom to go anywhere, but in return, he loses $2M he could have earned by just sitting on the bench and keeping his mouth shut in Pittsburgh.

Look I get it... the Patriots are bad. All of them, pure evil. But to dissect a situation like this is just feeding the media trolls who create stories where there are none.

It's amazing to me... I've seen more complaining about the media (and in particular ESPN) from the Colts' fan base than any other team's. "They hate us, they're always wrong, why do you even bother watching ESPN anymore?" etc-etc-etc.

Yet it's ESPN's "Deflategate" story that you're all clinging to now like it's scripture.

I "get" that Pats fans want to believe in their team.   Who doesn't?

I "get" that there are always two sides to every story.

I "get" that all kinds of leaks are happening with each and every story unfolding.

I'm trying not to judge the fans, because I have been on the receiving end of that more than I care to get into.

My assessment earlier in this thread was in regard to the article I read and what I took away from it.   I think if anyone reads the article, not knowing any background or back story, that they would come away with the same summary I did.

I am really sick of all of it.  I am ready for the Super Bowl to be over and behind us so we can maybe get the answers to the ongoing investigations.

Afterall,  isn't that what we've been told will happen.

And can we believe everything we've been told?

It's just pathetic how much real estate the Pats have in the rest of the league's heads.

Go get a hobby. It's just sad

Well the only thing I can say to you is that your on a Colts Forum and if your not happy with the replies that are being posted maybe it would be wise to go to a Pat's Forum Board and I'm sure all the fans there would agree with your post. :)

As for the "pay cut" , I said it was 0 $ as I thought The Pats wavered him rather than what they did. That being signing him to a new contract after he cleared waivers. As I said in the earlier post .. there really wasn't much of a chance any of the 21 teams would exercise the right to put a claim in on him.

Now for why I'm STILL going to question your numbers is this.

Yes he signed for 3.7 million. How much of that was guaranteed ? Answer ... just the 950K signing bonus which he collected. The rest of that contract is a 900K base salary for 2014 and a 2 million $ base salary for 2015. None of that money was guaranteed. The chance that the Steelers were going to keep him at a $2,000,000 base in 2015 were probably less than my chances of going out with Kate Upton. They haven't cap room going forward to keep the good players let alone someone they could replace with a 6th -7th round draft pick .. or even an undrafted free agent RB. He was 100% going to be cut in 2015. So what does that leave for "lost compensation." It would be the difference of 5 weeks at $45,625 (730K div. by 16 games) and 5 weeks at  56K. ( 900K div by 16 games. I figured that on being with Pitt for 11 games and NE for 5 games.

So I do question your statement of his sacrificed half of his 3.7 mill as that would be 1.85 mill. Reason being that I come up with around $55,000. Now maybe Pitt can go after some of the 950K signing bonus ? I doubt it very much , so I think my figures are right on.

That said , I have no idea if and who he may have talked to from NE . Maybe nobody ? Dunno. I just posted the link to the story. I probably should have been "softer" with the title of the thread. I really did look at it and say to myself.. "does this crap ever end ?" Just seems like one thing after the other. Spygate , defaulted footballs , players faking injuries vs the Colts no huddle (the Willie M. dive and subsequent tackle of James was disgusting ) pushing the limit with formations ... just one thing after the other. If you don't believe the "jealous .. persecution thing" which I don't , you have to say "what the heck is going on here ?

Well, to be fair here,  I have been pretty outspoken in what I think I know.   We all think we know  what we "think we know".

What I meant earlier is,  I am "trying" to not judge others on their stance just because we happen to differ in our opinions.

We're all entitled to our opinions and feelings.

I don't blame someone for seeing things differently than I do, and expect the same in return.   That's all.

Can't wait till this is all behind us ~  IF it ever is.

Not as long as we have a media that is driven by clicks.

The biggest issue I have with this particular post is you have the list of stuff that bothers you..you can divide into two categories. The "gates", and the rest, which is on field things.

Being disgusted with the gates is quite reasonable. I'm kinda fed up with them myself.

I don't know of a rivalry where a fan of one team doesn't accuse a player on the other side of faking an injury at one time or another, or other such on field shenanigans.  Maybe if you step back and break them up, the pats could seem a bit less evil?

I didn't say that this whole list that bothered me. I was just saying .. geez . when is this going tho end ?  To be honest , the one that really bothered me was the injury faking. Especially when it cost us the game where W. M. stopped Edge and that gave NE HFA and may have really altered the outcome of that season. Faking injuries was no doubt cheating and I have no doubt that they were faked. That said , spy gate never bothered me that much and I'm holding judgement on the deflation. The Blount issue and formation thing is no big deal to me. I'll take the no comment on the Blount salary to mean you kind of give up on that one ? But anyway , you should be happy that your team id playing Sunday and I don't doubt they were the best in the AFC. I guess me stance in the deflation thing is I think you have both an arrogant HC and owner also. That makes me look at this issue with a little disdain before I know all the facts.

I was not in on the Blount discussion, so I'll let you fight that out with him :)

My opinion on Blount tho, is that he was never told there was a spot if he managed to get out. But it was a low risk move. Be a jerk. He either gets cut, or gets benched. If he gets benched, then he has the big salary, and easy season. Probably cut in the off season.

If he gets cut, there were a few teams that could use a back. He was probably sure he would get an offer.

ehh Grasping for straws here.  He might have engineered his release because he was unhappy with his role.  But there is no way of knowing for certain he'd clear waivers . . .

When he did clear waivers it makes logical sense that he would go back to the place where he's had the most success.

I'm not sure I follow this thread completely but I think what we should be asking is why wouldn't another team in the league block the Pats from re-signing Blount. I seem to remember the Pats picking up a TE from the Giants when they let him go because of injuries just to stop them from signing him back. Fact is Blount had every bit a chance to win a SB with Pittsburg had he stayed and helped them as in NE. Fact is he is a knucklehead....smokes dope...gets in fights...and is not a good teammate for the most part. However, Belicheck can do things with players no one else can. Coach the uncoachable if you may say...and gets the most out of them. I don't get what we are trying to say in this thread....except that Belicheck and the Pats are the only one with enough vision to see what Blount can do for a franchise down the stretch and in the post-season when running the ball and these big backs wear down defenses.

When I read the article, what I came away with, was Blount was let go on a free agency blunder, the Steelers picked him up,  he probably never wanted to leave the Pats,  the Pats may have felt the same way, he didn't perform well in Pittsburgh, neither on or off the field,  The Steelers cut him,   he was then placed on waivers, no other team showed any interest, and the Pats picked him back up.

Some (the writer included)  seem to think it was a set-up, that he screwed up on purpose, to be let go, and return to the Pats.

:dunno:   That's just my take on what the writer was trying to relay.   Not that it all happened that way, but it seems that is what the writer was saying.
