Is having a receiver like hilton an advantage or disadvantage on 3rd down?

It's 3rd and 6 and the game is on the line. Would throwing  to your star receiver  in that situation  make you easier to defend or is it better to have a team where there is no favorite receiver  and the ball is thrown to whoever is open.

As long as the QB doesn't follow him with his eyes the whole time, it's not an issue.   Plenty of other receivers to use.

Advantage regardless. You either go to him or use him to shift the coverage to allow a secondary target to get open. The more attention he can demand, the more it helps the rest.

I am pretty sure TY was really good on third down last year. We were also one of the best teams on third down.

I think the old football adage applies here - "think players not plays."  It is always helps to have top notch playmakers.

Having Hilton vs. not having him is a huge advantage. However, some is going to have to give the Colts what Inman gave them. He was unbelievably clutch on 3rd IIRC.

There is no disadvantage to having Hilton.  It only becomes a problem if your 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th options are not very good.  

 

Sure they might shift their coverage to Hilton but that only leaves the rest of your receivers with 1 on 1 matchups.  If one of them can win the matchup and the QB can get him the ball and he can catch it you are fine.

TY is a star receiver because he can get open, make great adjustments when the ball is in the air, and he can catch just about everything thrown to him. Having a player like that is an advantage.

 

In your 3rd and 6 scenario, either way, having TY is an advantage.

 

A. If you are throwing to your star receiver, then you would assume that the defense did not roll coverage towards him, and thus, he would likely be open against most single coverage's. 

 

B. If the defense rolls coverage towards TY, then you have an advantage only if you have a reliable second receiver, like Doyle, Inman, Rogers (like in the Miami game) or hopefully  Campbell/Cain.

Inman was a solid possession receiver for us. I was disappointed to see him go. 

 

I'm excited to see what they do with Funchess. We have some size running routes this year. The way we utilize or TEs paired with what we potentially have on the outside.....we should be a matchup nightmare for most teams.

 

TY is absolutely an advantage as long as you have at least a reliable second option. He makes the field bigger for other receivers. Still on those other receivers to make the plays when they

need to be made.

the only disadvantage we had last year was over-reliance on TY due to the overall state of X WR.

 

not being able to truly threaten on the other side of the field, or deep, led to double teams and ultimately a less effective TY.

 

that should not be a problem this year.

I think this team is mature and unselfish enough that they want to win games and don't care too much about who is making the plays.

 

One thing I think Reich does very well (for the most part) is adjust to situations within the game (this is something we didn't really see from the Pagano era after Arians went to Arizona).  TY was our star last year, and will continue to be our star for another few years (perhaps Campbell takes over that role if TY slows down a little?).   However, there were clearly situations where Luck had other WRs/TEs/RBs to utilize.  This is why Ebron had so many touchdowns, the coaches knew how to find mismatches for him in the red zone.  

 

As @Irish YJ said, the problem with TY (at times) last year, was he lacked a supporting cast (or late in the year was playing with pretty bad ankle sprains).  If Funchess, Campbell, Cain work out at WR and if Ebron and Doyle stay healthy, we should have plenty of options on 3rd and 6 type plays.  TY's a top 15 WR in the NFL... having him on our team is definitely not a weakness.
