Indianapolis Colts: Acquire Marcell Dareus for a first-round pick

The Indianapolis Colts need help on defense. To become a serious Super Bowl contender, they need to improve against both the run and the pass. Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky was able to manufacture a pass rush last season with some creative blitzing. Indianapolis ranked seventh in Adjusted Sack Rate on defense, which accounts for attempts, opponent, and down-and-distance. What the Colts did not have was a single pass rusher who could win one-on-one matchups regularly. It showed in their statistics. Though they had 41 sacks as a team, no single player had more than Jonathan Newsome's 6.5.

Had he played in 2014, Robert Mathis could have been that player. He showed with 19.5 sacks in 2013 that he could be a one-man pass rush. But Mathis turns 34 later this month, well past the age where pass rushers usually begin to decline. Moreover, general manager Ryan Grigson indicated he may not be ready for training camp. The Colts need reinforcements.

Newsome showed he is a developing force on the inside, but what the Colts could really use is an interior penetrator who is also strong against the run. Dareus fits the bill perfectly. He had 10.5 sacks in 2014 and would provide an immediate upgrade to a mostly underwhelming Indianapolis defensive line. He was also a force against the run, making more plays, and more successful plays, than any other Buffalo defensive lineman. Just 25, he should be an outstanding player for several years to come, making him a perfect fit for a Colts team not looking at a brief window of opportunity. And the Bills need a first-round pick badly to replace the pick they dealt to Cleveland to get Sammy Watkins a year ago.

OMG thought we really shelled out a first for him gave me quite a scare. Dareus is good but im not giving a first for him i think their are some more than capable prospects in the mid to later rounds.

Why wouldn't you give up a first for Dareus? He's only 24 yrs old

Why would the Bills trade him for a low 1st rounder?

Not saying they would but this is the last year of his contract. Buffalo used the 5th year option on him So maybe they don't want to ties up a ton of cap room on him ? So if they don't extend him this offseason , they either let him walk in 2016 or maybe franchise him at around 12 mill ? If they franchised him in 2016 and then tried to trade him , the price would probably be less than a #1.

So that would be the reason they would trade him and it would also mean that Indy would want to tie up  huge cap # signing him. So I guess there would be a lot of things that would need to fall in place for this to happen.

Why would the Bills trade him for a low 1st rounder?

Well there could be several reasons

  • Because teams try hard to find that guy that can be a difference maker on their team for years and years and as soon as they find him then trade him away and start the process all over again.
  • Because he's a perfect fit for the Colts.
  • Because Grigson said, "pretty please'.

Hiding by responses in this thread I think the value of a # 1 pick is being undersold. I think that lesson was learned last year. More importantly is the value of the player combined with his low cap #. Dareus is a really good player who will soon be commanding big dough when the colts have their own players to pay.

In other words - keep the pick.

It all depends on a few things if I were to make this trade. I'd wait to see if the Colts can get either Dan Williams or Haloti Ngata in free agency first. If they can't, then consider making a trade for Dareus. Since Shelton and Brown most likely wont be available round 1, Dareus would be another good option.

    • Notices of posts on this thread kept popping up. I knew there was no way the conversation was still about TB and the roast…. so I literally just hopped in here to see where the conversation veered off to. Wow, what a tangent!  Might be one of the best I’ve seen on the forum
    • We’ve had many long time posters who’ve gone MIA…    I’d like to imagine he retired from many years of teaching and is enjoying the quiet life on a beach somewhere.    @southwest1 always posted interesting topics as well that I miss reading.

    • Wilt dominated Bill Russell when they played, what Boston fans don't comprehend for some reason is, the Celtics had all the best players on their team other than players like West, Baylor, and Robertson. Outside of that the league had a bunch of MEH players back then except on Boston. Boston had Cousy, Havlicek, Sam Jones, Tom Heinsohn, and KC Jones besides Russell. Russell could get away with playing a bad game on occasion because Havlicek or Sam Jones or even Heinsohn could go for 25 and they would still win. Cousy wasn't a great shooter but was a great Assist guy and would just run that team like a great QB does.   Bill Simmons has Bill Russell as the 2nd greatest player ever, that is what ruins his list and I agree with a lot of his rankings. Loved his book and love his knowledge on ranking players but his Russell ranking is simply because he is from Boston. No way in hell is Bill Russell the 2nd greatest player of all-time. He had too many offensive deficiencies to be that. To me Larry Bird was the better player compared to Bill Russell.    Simmons top 10 updated: 1. Michael Jordan 2. Bill Russell 3. LeBron James 4. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 5. Magic Johnson 6. Larry Bird 7. Wilt Chamberlain  8. Tim Duncan 9. Kobe Bryant  10. Jerry West   Mine is: 1. Michael Jordan (we agree)   2. Magic Johnson   3. LeBron James (we agree)   4. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (we agree)   5. Kobe Bryant   6. Larry Bird (we agree)   7. Wilt Chamberlain (we agree)   8. Steph Curry - Bill has Curry 15th.   9. Shaq O'Neal - Bill has Shaq 13th.   10. Bill Russell - yes, he makes my top 10, great defensive player, great rebounder, a good scorer but not a dominant scorer and a winner. His 11 championships can be viewed in a lot of different ways compared to how players won theirs in the 80's-up until now. 11 is 11 though so a top 10 list without him would not like right.   He had West and Duncan in his top 10 - I don't. I have Shaq and Curry instead. To me Shaq was more dominant at his peak than Duncan was, and Curry changed the game with his 3-point shooting. Shaq is the only player in NBA history other than Michael Jordan to win 3 straight Finals MVP's (2000-2002), he has to be top 10. I never thought I would see a better shooter than Reggie Miller, then Steph entered the building. Steph also does have 4 championships, a Finals MVP, and 2 League MVP's + he has the most 3 pointers made in NBA history.
