Erlinger’s replacement

Let’s face it Flacco. Is nearly 4 and  on a one year deal and Erlinger doesn’t look like he’s ever gonna be ready for prime time. I hoping Slovis or Pennix can step up

You mean bean? Isn’t pennix a RB?

This thread is confusing. Excuse Me What GIF by Bounce

I had a dream Wednesday night that all of the draft choices for the entire draft had somehow been leaked in advance by Rapoport. The Colts were taking a QB in the 1st round.

This thread confused me more than that dream.

I had a dream two nights ago that I was playing Killer Instinct with Mike Tyson and beat him with Combo. Except the game had Super Smash Bros mechanics. Then after I won, Mike Tyson wanted a rematch the next day. I said no problem. Never got to give him that rematch and woke up for day 3 of the draft.

That dream was also confusing lol.

That's a sick fever dream!

I played Smash semi-competitively in high school, so I used to only have really stressful dreams about Smash Bros. 😂

I was a very good Marth player on Melee, but never played any big tourneys. Never really got into any of the modern Smash games. With Ultimate I thought about it, but the sheer number of characters they put on the game ruined it for me. Didn't feel special anymore.

I mained Marth in Melee as well. I moved to Ike with Brawl, which was my last game. I really just played in some local and regional stuff.

I play Ultimate with my nephews once or twice a year. It's fun, but nothing beats the nostalgia of 64 or Melee.

I can never decide which I loved more, 64 or Melee.

64 for the pure nostalgia and it being the first.... Melee for really building on 64 and improving it. Such good games.

Btw Link for ever, with a side of Pikachu.

All I wanted to do is get a conversation going about Erlinger’s replacement.

Flacco is clearly # 2.  I'm not sure if Elhinger should make the 53.  Unless he's basically a coach or a whiz in the film room.  Even then, with the new rules he'd be safe on the PS.

There are dozens of guys who could fill his spot if you're looking towards the future.

I don't think there will be one.

Ehlinger is the 3rd string. Flacco is Minshews replacement as number 2. If both Richardson and Flacco are down for any amount of time the season is over anyways.

We will ride out Sam Ehlingers contract and then let him drift off to whoever wants him.

I tend to agree with this.

Although I would give Sam the opportunity to compete with Flacco for the number 2

I predict Sam will keep his spot on the roster thru 2024

I think you're probably right, but for the life of me I don't know why.  They're paying him $1M if he stays on the 53.  But that's not a concern.

The spot could be used for an extra player, maybe a specialist, or another ST player.

They could put Sam on the PS and activate every week if they wanted, as the emergency QB.

Erlinger will be our 3rd QB. Ballard and Irsay loves this kid. He is 100% better than the current Univ Texas QB, Quinn Ewers who has been throwing to AD Mitchell. Aside of AR he is mobile whereas Flacco is not.

I could see Slovis challenging Ehlinger for QB3. He's more athletic than Ehlinger and showed flashes of a potential 1st round QB prospect as a freshman at USC. Some stability and a chance to reset might be exactly what he needs. His upside is WAY higher than Ehlinger's and we've already seen him do it. It's just a matter of if he can get back to that level of play.

Don't perpetuate Sam's name spelling errors! It's Ehlinger!

On opinion from the peanut gallery

Sam E is going into year 3

If he was practicing well and had command of this offense I don’t think we are spending the cash on a vet to back up AR

Im not sure that he will ever be someone to turn the team over to

IMHO I hope the 2 QBs that we brought in as udfas get a true competition against Sam E

Let’s face it AR news to stop getting an injury positions. Secondly Flacko is almost 40 years old and Sam looks terrible. Whatever he is out there. I hate to say it, but there is a decent chance that the third string quarterback could play a game this season, especially with an illness or a minor injury.

I will be honest. The third string QB spot really is of little concern only bc it should be used to groom the future backup in hopes to free up salary cap space. However, if we are going to contend with a running type QB, I believe we will always be spending money on a good backup. Would be great to get a guy on a rookie contract capable of filling the position but typically those guys need 3-5yrs of “grooming” to be nfl ready. So, I guess I consider #3 Qb no man’s land and just throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks. Whoever they choose has little to no bearing on this team. If we get down to this guy we are most likely dead in the water.

Ok, here's my prediction.

Both Flacco and Ehlinger will be on the team this year.  And for similar reasons.

  1. Flacco is here expressly to lead the team to the playoffs as a seasoned veteran quarterback, in case AR5 gets injured again.
  2. Ehlinger is here in case both quarterbacks go down, if they just need somebody to play.

Next year?

  1. Flacco will probably not be here, simply because of his age.
  2. Ehlinger will probably not be here, simply because there's no reason to give him a contract beyond his rookie deal.

I predict that next year, we will sign yet another seasoned veteran quarterback.  To do the exact same thing that Flacco is here to do.  Lead the team to the playoffs in case AR5 is hurt.

And I also predict we draft another mid-round quarterback.  For the same reason Ehlinger is here.  To be an inexpensive guy to play the position just in case both quarterbacks go down.

Who is my veteran quarterback for next year?  I'm guessing Andy Dalton.  No, he's not my choice for starter.  But if I needed a guy to back up AR5, who's a "been there, done that" kind of guy, to play just in case...  Yeah, I would think so.

Yeah I think Slovis has a legit shot, had that great freshman season where as was stated looked like a possible 1st round pick then never got back there but if coaches can tap into it no reason he cant beat out Sam. As for Bean he was bench at KU for Jalon Daniels, he is also very thin framed so appears to be a camp arm only (Having been a college teammate of Cole Ballard who was his understudy once Daniels was injured didnt hurt thats for sure).

Let's all make it through this season first.

After that I wouldn't mind going after Mac Jones as our #2 backup behind AR.  Do realize Jones was traded to the Jaguars but currently listed as a 2024 free agent.  Jones' 2020 season still is the highest-graded season by a FBS QB in PFF College era since 2014 and still leads all QBs with an impressive 95.8 grade.  Zach Wilson also in 2020 had a 95.4 grade, Joe Burrow in 2019 had a 94.9 grade, Jayden Daniels in 2023 had a 94.7 grade, and Kyler Murray in 2018 had a 94.6 grade.

Still a lot of hope around AR and yet still a lot of uncertainty given his short college career.  Very similar to Caleb Williams.  More worrisome about injury projections.  Flacco should be good for one season.  Unfortunately for the Colts signing Flacco we lost out of any 2025 NFL Draft compensatory picks losing Gardner Minshew.  My top upcoming NFL draft replacements for Flacco, after Mac Jones, would be Jalen Milroe (Alabama) and Jaxson Dart (Mississippi).  A lot to like about both.  Milroe is a dual threat QB and Dart elevated his play in Lane Kiffin's RPO/play-action-heavy offense.  Dart's already breaking Eli Manning's college records.  Dart's great at working outside of the pocket and clearly needs to get better staying in the pocket.

As for Ehlingher's replacements can see the Colts look at Coastal Carolina's Grayson McCall another mobile pocket passer with quick release speed or K.J. Jefferson (Arkansas) another dual threat QB.

    • I say 8.  I think the floor is 5 and the ceiling 10.   This will still basically be richardsons rookie year and I think he will still be a little inconsistent. I see him having a season much like stroud did last year.  We are a better team than last year but our schedule is tougher than last year as well. I see us going 8wins 9 losses.
    • There was so much talk last year about part of our success came from a weak schedule plus poor quarterbacks Indy faced.   So I thought I’d show our 24 schedule and feature the quarterbacks we face:   1.  Hou — Stroud 2.  GrB — Love 3.  Chi  — Williams 4.  Pit   — Wilson 5.  Jax  — Lawrence 6.  Ten. — Levis  7.  Mia  — Tua 8.  Hou — Stroud 9.  Min  — McCarthy 10. Buf. — Allen 11.  NYJ — Rodgers 12.  Det — Goff 13.  NE. — Maye 14.  BYE 15. Den — Nix 16. Ten — Levis 17.  NYG — Jones 18.  Jax. — Lawrence   Four rookies:  Williams, McCarthy, Maye, Nix.   Two 2nd year QBs:  Stroud, Levis Two young veterans:  Lawrence, Tua Four Vets of various years:  Allen, Rodgers,  Goff, Wilson That’s a total of 12.    Lawrence, Stroud, Levis the Colts face X2.  That’s a total of 15.    Then Love and Jones round out the 17 QBs the Colts face.   Sure feels like a tougher schedule of QBs than we faced last year.
    • I totally agree!! I’m sure Shane had the rug pulled from under him after AR went down…. Especially with JT being back…… I think we will see a vastly different type of Offense… the few times we see Shane reference the Jt /AR combo he grins like a goat eating briars !! You add Pitt, downs,AD, woods, Ogletree……. We’re kinda scary
    • Phase 2 of off season program began Monday May 13 right after rookie camp. Whole team together but offense vs defense can't practice against each other.
    • the realist in me because of the weak secondary and unproven talent on the team sees 7 wins. but the fan in me sees 10 wins
