Blake Freeland

He is about to get a good dose of the trial by fire that Bernard got last year. Let us all remember that, even though we had a good win last week, this is still a building/growing year for us. Let's keep that same energy with the team tomorrow.

The reps will serve him well in the long term. I expect things to look ugly at times but hopefully, Blake can come in and put in a serviceable performance and show us why the Colts drafted him in the fourth round throughout the game.

How many sacks will he be charged with in the game?  I will guess two.  How many holding calls or other penalties will he be charged with?  I will guess three.  I Hope I’m wrong but let’s hope they give him some help out there.

So about what we would expect from Smith.

Does not look like a strong man in this picture. Maybe he is not sure.

Don’t get me wrong he’s probably stronger than you and I, but that was kind of the knock for him was his strength. Athletic as the day is long and a solid chunk of clay but needed and NFL strength program to get him where he needs to be. Kind of the exact same as Raimann. It might be a little rough initially but I have high hopes for the kid eventually taking over for Smith.

I think Freeland will do fine, man for man, blocking his assigned defenders. I worry more, the sacks and penalties be a result of, blitzes and stunts, where the Colts line is not adjusted to compensate

Two thumbs up for pessimism

Feel like LA is gonna move Donald around on the line. May have to use a lot of TE blocking and doubles.

Donald vs RG or LT, I can definitely see. I’m fine with a sack or two as long as there aren’t fumbles and Steichen adapts accordingly quickly.

That’s part of the game. Overall we just need to make more plays for the scoreboard than them, that’s all that matters.

He’s going to get beat, everyone does! Can we minimise the mistakes (holding, false starts)?

Expect the colts to run the ball a lot, a lot, hopefully without another concussion to AR 🫣

Go Colts.

How did Freeland do against LAR?

Frankly I thought he played better than I expected. Yes he couldn't handle Donald but not many can. May have played as well as  Raimann did in his first game. Hope he turns out as well as Raimann has.

I saw good and bad from him which is to be expected for a rookie making his first start.  The positive thing is I saw more positive than bad.  I think he showed promise but teams will now have film on him as well to attack him.  Still a good start and better than Raimann had in his first outing so that’s promising.

    • I will say this. AR imo threw the ball much MUCH better in his 4 games last year compared to his first 3 this year.  Not even close.   I have to believe a lot of that is due to him being unable to practice much on his mechanics until August or so.  Remember even during spring practice he was complaining of a sore shoulder and had to take some time off.   I fully believe that once he is totally over his injury that he will be able to take the extra reps needed to get back into a way of throwing without having to think so much.   I play a sport at a highly competitive level, won't say which one, but I broke my thumb this spring and I just now am start to get back into the swing of things.  But I am not even close to where I was before I broke it.
    • Do you honestly think the Colts will win a SB, let alone make the playoffs....with Joe Flacco as QB?  I mean are you seriously pining for a 39 year old retread ala Matt Ryan to lead this team????   I am at a loss for that and the only thing that makes any sense is your complete dislike for AR is clouding your judgement.    AR is the future of this team.  He has a high ceiling and with him, and IF he progresses, the team could be a SB contender in a year or 2.  But with or without him there is no way in H E double toothpicks that this team wins a SB this year.  Just not enough ELITE talent on the team.  Honestly the only truly elite player on the entire team as of today is JT.  AR could be.  Not now but could be.   Besides that?  Nobody.  By elite I mean game changing talent.    So you ride with AR, hope he stays healthy and finishes the season, and improves. He makes good decisions for the most part.  The INT in the endzone today was not a good one but for the most part he does.  He just needs to gain experience and technique.    But saying JF should start, when at best....I mean AT BESt ALL HE DOES IS GET YOU into the first round of the playoffs?  Who cares.   I would rather see progression from AR, even it means suffering through a lot of losses, and get a high pick for next year rather than go through a 9-8 season with JF.  Remember the first Manning year he was not good, but he gained tons of experience.  We then got a super high draft pick where we drafted Edge the and we were off to the races after that.   I mean, haven't you had enough of Rivers, Wentz, Ryan and Mishew?  I cannot honestly believe people want to go back to that.   FJ is Matt Ryan PERSONIFIED.
    • One progress I see is that he's finishing games so that's a step. The shoulder surgery and offseason rehab has definitely set him back for a raw guy who needs all the reps he can get. It was reported that AR has a total of 30 something starts at qb INCLUDING hs. Think about that most have that in high school alone. Caleb Williams is the 2nd youngest starting qb in the league and had 33 starts in college alone while winning a Heisman trophy. AR is the youngest starting qb in the league at just 22 but has extreme talent and natural gifts that have to be developed.   I think the staff is doing him a disservice by taking away the threat of his legs (see Lamar) because he is not a pocket passer. I think AR needs a go to TE and the Colts need to rely on the run more with JT until AR catches up from his lost rehab time. Give him some easy short throws to build his confidence before he starts throwing into coverage take the Josh Allen approach.   The biggest problem is that Ballard chose a project in AR instead of moving up to snag the polished CJ Stroud. Most teams move up to get their franchise guy unless they already have the number one pick overall. The reason why it's problem is that the fan base is starting to get restless and the thought of another few years of unfulfilled promise seems discouraging.   Once Ballard chose to sit pat AR was the right choice over the awful Will Levis who was a strong possibility if not for Shane according to Shefty and Will's people. Bottom line is that this will take time. Is the overall team good enough to make a push while AR goes through his growing pains to reach his full potential? I doubt it because Ballard's tenure has been spun in mediocrity at best.
    • Honestly no, but then I didn’t expect to see any progress yet either. He basically lost an entire season and offseason because of injury.    I’ll be more concerned if there’s no progress next season.    What I think is much more of a concern this season is that Steichen’s playcalling seems to have regressed badly. I expected a vastly different offense than what we’re playing and I don’t think Steichen is helping AR at all.
    • To me, this is still his rookie year. When you are rehabbing an injury, you are not getting better at football. He has basically played 7 NFL games with 0 offseason to work on the things we KNEW he needed to work on (hence why he was considered a project QB). I will reserve my judgement for him next year given he has a chance at a healthy offseason.
