Are You Concerned?

So - the Colts head coaching search continues - as there "may be" an unprecedented THIRD round of interviews.

The "candidate field" began with 13.

Dan Quinn and Ben Johnson decided to stay with their teams.

Bubba Ventrone - Mike Kafka apparently haven't made the "final cut".

Ejiro Evero was just hired by Frank Reich for the Panthers Defensive Coordinator opening.

So - Are YOU concerned that the Indianapolis Colts THOROUGH search for the next head coach may keep them from acquiring top level talent for the rest of the coaching staff?

With the Evero hiring - I sure am.

There's another thread about the Colt's blocking Bradley from a lateral move. That indicates the new Head coach will be mandated to have Bradley as DC. One less slot to worry about. Of course Bradley could become a Head Coach but I don't see that happening.

Somewhat.    But Ballard knows this and has factored this.   He’s also talked to the HC’s about their staffs.   So he knows much, much more than we do.   So if he’s ok, then I think we need to be ok.

I actually thought it was against the rules to post in all bold letters. But it's been a while since I read them. Just tired of all the silliness and same thing posted over and over. Guess it's time for a break from the board for a while. Have a good one.

From the sound of things, the Colts are trying to retain a lot of the existing coaches.

so there may not be a need for them to acquire too many top level talent staff members

Not really.  At least, not because other teams have made choices, and have taken some of the options off of the table.  But we weren't going to re-hire Reich, we knew that DeMeco was going to go to the Texans no matter what, and we knew that there was no way that Payton was coming to us.  My only gripes were the head coaches that decided to remain with their teams.

SO -- with what is left, we have a 2 out of 3 shot to land either a good offensive mind or a good leadership guru.  And for as far as we have fallen, we're still not the "destination to be avoided" that Arizona is.

So, I'm still pretty hopeful that we'll land a decent HC, and move on with the next stage.

(Unless Irsay pulls an Irsay, and hires Saturday anyway.)

Absolutely! Ballard is two steps ahead of everyone. In fact, he probably scripted all of the NFL’s personnel moves in advance in his binder.  Trust Ballard and the wins pile up.

It might be? I'm not sure.  I just know it's easier for me to see on my cell phone.

As far as things being repeated the NFL season is not 100% over yet. :spit:

Evero is going to run a 3-4 in Carolina.  Not really the defense Ballard prefers. So they didn’t really miss out. The Colts roster is built for a 4-3 and not suited for a 3-4.  The Evero connection to Morris sounded great but Gus also has ties to Morris.  If not Gus then Henderson would probably be Morris’ choice for DC.

Four candidates apparently have told the Colts they’re good with Gus as the d-coordinator.  Gus did a good job with the D considering their high priced LB was a cheerleader this year.

I’m going to assume Steichen and Callahan are two of those coaches.  Bradley did a good job against Steichen’s offense.  They may be just fine with only having to put together an offensive staff.

    • I hope the question to be resolved is whether they should sign/acquire a safety who is a starter or one who is a backup, not whether they should add a safety at all.
    • Really impressed how Pitt has taken it upon himself to mentor AD. Not saying he didn't do that with Pierce or Downs, but it seems like AD is more forthcoming about it. Happy to see Pitt is finally embracing the leadership role as he knows that WR room starts with him and his example
    • Yeah, it goes without saying that he has to stay on the field. And they've talked about him needing to be smarter about protecting himself. I think he's learned his lesson about respecting the competition. the other lesson is that he'll need to pick his moments, not putting his body on the line when it's not a critical play.   But there's a difference between encouraging him to be less reckless, and trying to restrict him from being a rushing threat.    As for the bolded, I know it's counterintuitive, but I think a QB getting pressured and hit in the pocket is just as dangerous -- maybe moreso -- than a QB scrambling. In the pocket, you have 4-5 gigantic defenders being blocked by 5 gigantic OL, and when they close in, the QB often finds himself under 600 pounds of trench players. He's also mostly defenseless, especially when it's time to throw.    Whereas when a QB runs or scrambles, he can protect himself, and he's generally not surrounded by 10 other players who can fall on top of him. He can get down and slide, run out of bounds, etc. If he's smart, he can use his incredible athleticism to protect himself as a runner.
    • that definitely sounds like he was going to say should and caught himself.
    • He named Ogletree. He didn't name Jordan Murray. I think it was reported back before the draft that Ogletree is clear, and there's nothing coming from the NFL.   In general, I agree with you about Ballard. He's candid and sincere (IMO), and he means what he says, so it's not just coachspeak all the time. Yeah, he might play the game and dance around some things, but he's not just spitting out platitudes because he has to spend 20 minutes with the media. So I always listen to his comments and pressers.   When I said boilerplate, I really just meant I didn't think there was anything that I would consider newsworthy, aside from the injury news. And that's fine, I wasn't expecting anything significant.   You might be right that he's a lot more excited about the offense than the defense. And that makes sense, I think there's some potential for real excitement on offense. Obviously that starts with Richardson, but we have a lot of talented young players, a good OL, and a really good RB. The offense could be really good, and probably needs to be for this team to make some real noise. Because the defense, while solid, has some concerns. Of course, we drafted some talented players and made some staff changes, and there will be plenty of competition, like Ballard said.   Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Good insights.
