Colts Players Who Might Get The Axe

every year some players under contract get cut for cap reasons. these guys are not free agents, but probably should be on the list of 'endangered' colts.

feel free to add or critique this list. and if anyone has the actual cap savings from cutting them add that too!

joe addai. he has a 5 mill salary this year, and i just dont see us keeping him. he does 'fit the system' but gets hurt a lot.

dwight freeney. huge salary this season. i dont see how we keep him, he is in the last year of his contract, and is due 19 million, the cut saves 14 million.

i think we have no way of keeping both freeney and mathis. mathis played his butt off this year and freeney has went to the bank before-- one stays and i vote mathis.

cutting manning saves 6.6 mill. not saying we cut him, but if he isnt healed.......

Curtis Painter...He is due 500K

Kerry Collins... He is due 11 Million

Other than that I think we do keep Freeny and Mathis. I also think we should cut ties with Wayne, and Gonzalez.

How sure are we that Mathis can do what he can do without Freeney? When Freeney has gone down in the past our pass rush has been non existant. I do not know how quick I would be to shell out top DE money to Mathis. We have all seen what this pass rush is without Freeney and we have seen Freeney keep it up if Mathis is not there. 19 million to a primier pass rusher is a ton of money, but I rather go with the known than the unknown.

JA will probably get the ax especially with DB finally showing us something. Then again how can we trust DB to carry the load next season. The guy has been horribly inconsistent his entire career here. He could just as easily return to the old DB who get hits once and just falls down and has no burst or drive

i am not happy with a carter/brown backfield, so i think we get another back in the draft.

as far as cutting freeney, i HATE the idea. i want mathis back too. but with the cap, you lose guys every year.

restructure freeney allowing us to sign him and mathis with the savings from freeney.. can never have enough pass rushers

move on from clark tamme is just as good but cost 8m less per year

cut brackett due to much $$$ not productive for his price and his back up is better than him

cut collins if he dont retire

decide on saturday paid alot , might be time to move on

cut deim, painter ,gonzo all gone

decide on bullitt and addai ... brown can carry the load with carter, and lefeged is and option at ss and the draft class is deep you could even look at l. landry of the skins if the price is right

forgot decide if u want to keep a vet like wayne to help luck along until u get a young talent at wide out

Some of the points about Clark are valid, but don't be naive: Tamme is nowhere near as good. He was productive because of Manning, and because no one bothered covering him. Clark drew 2 or 3 guys on every play, and still put up big numbers (with Manning), while also freeing up the rest of the offense.

Agree. How much cap space does he (Clark) take? I think if we can, keep him. Assuming Manning comes back, I have a feeling he'll be back to his performance from the past, which will help a lot, especially if we end up losing Wayne.

I can see Brackett being cut. With the new GM I could also see Garcon being traded for draft pick or a player and a lower draft pick because he has more value now than either Collie or Gonzo.

Perhaps Grigson can help bring Trevor Laws from Philly to Indy (I believe he will be a free agent this year)

I cant see the Colts completely gutting the team ... The Texans are stocked on D and their O is getting that good as well. If we gut the team we can expect to be fighting for a wildcard game the next 5-6 years.

I dont agree with this, come next year if the eagles keep most of their players they will be quite the power house, the colts are rebuilding... and that starts with a great QB which we have in Peyton... and if its gonna be Luck, he has the tools to be a great QB... now all he needs is a good coach to guide him just like peyton had with moore... i think come next year the colts will have a stronger defense for the main reason that this team will not be centered around manning anymore so the money will be floating around for other players especially on defense.

Come on guys this is a no brainer....

Cut:

Collins

Painter

They did nothing this year.. I am still question why we picked Collins up in the first place. Ray Charles could see that he was washed up before the season started. If/when we pick up Luck there is no need to have Painter on the roster. He is the perfect water boy for the sideline. As far as Freeney again another no brainer... HE STAYS PUT!!! He has a good 5 years left in the game, trading him will hurt our already struggling defense.

Clark... well he's a toss up.. we can always find a younger cheaper threat... :-)

Why wpuld we cut wayne> he been about the only team constant. Aging yes, finished no. Trade Garcon who's been about as consistent as oil prices, keep Wayne (on a short term deal and maybe move to #2 position), work with the draft or FA to find a good younger "consistent" number 1 receiver. Keeping Wayne in the offense only keeps veteran leadership consistent catches and a real threat.

Because he wants too much money. We arn't cutting him. He is a FA. we just wont re-sign him.

You make a point but, I believe this year showed us that Donald Brown plays better with a fullback, so i dont see any reason why we wont incorperate a fullback into our offense after we had our best rushing season we've had in years. So the point is DB should continue to grow as long as he has a lead blocker in the backfield aka a FB

i think we got collins because polian knew painter was....well painter. he broke my heart countless times tossing the ball to the opposition while at purdue.

i read somewhere that collins made some sort of a deal when he had 'concussion like symptoms' and gave back some money..... no idea if its true or not.

also have read and heard something about clark having lost a step. THATS the key with him-- if he aint got the speed, he goes.

the problem with freeney is 19 million dollars on the contract. none of us want to lose him, but if you have a 120 mill pie, how many 19 mill guys can you have without hurting the team? in the salary cap era you live and die with the draft and first contracts. this would be his what third? dont know if we can afford him.

Wayne didn't even have 1,000 yards. IMO he isn't the impact player like he thinks he is and should not be paid like a top wr when clearly he is not

75 catches and 960 yards is not bad considering he had a combination of Collins/Painter and Orlovsky throwing to him. And unlike Garcon, Wayne was not a beneficiary of being covered by one man most of the time, since he was the Colts main receiving threat he was double most of the time and tripled quite a bit after Clark went down.

Resign:

Mathis

Garcon

Anderson

(if affordable, Wayne)

(if not retiring and affordable, Saturday)

Restructure:

Freeney

Clark

(Bullitt - dunno what he's paid, but he's too injury prone. A decent player however)

Cut:

Brackett - overpaid, injury prone

Addai - overpaid, injury prone

Painter

Collins (will retire though)

Gonzalez

Wayne had crap throwing to him this year and still put up a nice season. He drops a lot of ball the prior season with Manning but he caught most everything around him this season. I would love to keep him but at this point in the game, Garcon is the more upside of wr's and needs to be the priority signing of wr's.

BTW, can't trade Garcon, he isn't ours to trade now, he will be a FA this year.

Clark was the highest paid tight end in the league when signed his last contract. However, he is probably the 5th or 6th best. One more reason that Polian probably got fired.

Doesn't matter that he might be 5th or 6th, hes as important to the offense as those other TEs are to there teams, possibly more. He's Peyton's security blankey. I doubt Irsay views Clark's contract as a bad contract, I doubt that most would view it as bad.

If I could have a RB like Hillis, S. Jackson, Rice, or Peterson, I could live without and Addai. Two good elements besides being an adequate runner in Addai's favor. He can be a quasi wide receiver and he's an excellent blocker. I think you gotta resign Wayne and find the deep threat on the other side. To do as much as we would like I don't see how the Colts get by without talking to Dwight about a restructuring. He might go for it. Especially, if it meant keeping Mathis and a playoff run. If it looks like we're scrapping next season(won't happen) for "rebuilding" then I'd expect him to take the money and run to FA next year.

I think we either extend him or release him. I don't think it's an issue of taking the money this year.

Sometimes I wonder if people play too much Madden

You cannot restructure Freeney's contract if this is the final year of his contract. There is no place to move that money unless we extend his contract therefore making the cap hit flexible.

We either want Garcon or we don't. You cannot tag him (top 5 wr money) and then trade him, that would be Wayne-esque money and every coach in the league knows what Garcon brings : extremely inconsistent explosiveness

I don't think you can cut every one of the guys you are all listing yet re-sign older guys like Wayne, Mathis, Saturday and Diem. You cannot trade players the way they do in the NBA or in MLB. The management must decide if we are playing for now or should free up cap space to build a younger team.

You absolutely can tag him and then trade him.

The franchise tag was designed as a transitional tool while you work on a long-term solution. It was never intended to keep a player on a team for one year at a high salary. The objective is to tag the player and keep him off the market, and then reach a long-term deal with him. You can also tag him, then trade him to a team that's willing to do a long-term deal with him. The long-term deal just needs to be done before the start of the new league year.

And yes, I play a lot of Madden Franchise Mode. This has nothing to do with it.
