So, let's say this does happen. Would that mean that Dorsett is the #3 WR going into the season? Typically your #4 or lower WR is your returner

I mean maybe.... On this team though #1 and # 2 don't really matter besides starting....

#3 #4 #5 are all interchangeable and will play plenty of football.

It doesn't really matter. They are going to put anyone back there that can make plays no matter the role on the depth chart.

T.Y. Used to be our punt returner when he started. (Didn't like it) I don't think he Colts really care to much about where a player is on the depth chart and who retunes kicks as long as they can make plays.

And again I don't think it matters after #1 and #2 all of the rest of the WR will see plenty of action.

Donte would be an interesting Kick Returner though!

I think we'll see Dorsett return punts. Typically your kickoff return man is a bit bigger bodied than your punt returner. I think Dorsett and Moncrief will both get a shot during camp/preseason. Moncrief didn't impress much on returns during the pre-season last year.

I think it has zero to very little chance of happening.  The article just kind of rambles on, it doesn't really list anything specific in nature regarding Moncrief actually being the returner. Other than showing his name amongst some of the other names. I think he returned a kick like once last year and didn't look very natural in doing so.  I have high expectation that Phil will be the main PR and KR.

Here's the text from the article:

While the Colts dominated defensive drive starts last year, McMahon is on the search for returners to set up short fields in 2015.

Rookie Phillip Dorsett is the likely punt returner.

At kick returner, Boom Herron, Donte Moncrief ("special with the ball in his hands" at 6-2 and 220 pounds), Duron Carter and Josh Robinson are all among the names McMahon mentions as deep threats come September.

It's a stretch, at the least, to say Moncrief will be the KR based off of that. But even if he is, I don't think it means anything about the WR hierarchy. Colts fans are used to guys lower on the depth chart, but some teams use #2 or #3 receivers for return duties. We already know Hilton and Johnson are the top two; how 3-5 shakes out is up in the air.

Besides all that, kick returns are a much smaller part of the game anymore.

That's what I was thinking. Typically your return man is a lower WR on the depth chart. Some cases have exceptions like the Steelers with Brown, DJAX in WAS, etc etc

But long as Hilton isn't back there I'm good

From what I recall, Courtney Roby showed some decent ability.  That's the last time I can recall us having a good returner.

That was so long ago, and he only played one game for us. I had forgotten about him, as a matter of fact.

Maybe he wasn't here long enough to lose his mind...

I am with you unless something has changed since last year I don't see it. Moncrief didn't look comfortable back there. He has ideal size and speed but he has no experience being back there and that was obvious last year.

I would say Dorsett is the best bet right now of the guys we know are going to be on the roster.

If we keep a return specialist I would look at Quan Bray from Auburn. I doubt we waste a spot on a return specialist. A roster spot this year I think you need to bring more to the table than being a KR. Especially with Dorsett being capable.

You could see D'joun Smith back there too. He had 28 KO returns at FAU 17 last year averaged 26.3 a return. Celiscar and Varga both have KO return experience could be something that helps one of them make the squad.

Exactly akcolt. That's the only thing that calmed my pure rage & furry when Grigs drafted Dorsett. Krunk told me maybe he can become a return specialist guy for INDY & my blood pressure immediately dropped.

If Dorsett isn't used in that capacity at all, SW1 is going be miffed man. Just my take on this situation.

Same article mentions Dorsett is likely to be our punt returner.  I think 3/4 WR will be interchangable, especially because Dorsett and Moncrief are so different (throw Carter in the mix and he is different than both of those guys).  Dorsett is blazing fast, tiny, and quick -- Moncrief is blazing fast, not as agile as Dorsett, and big -- they will have very different roles as WRs and can be used in different situations (e.g., I could see Moncrief being on the field more in the red zone due to his size).

Donte at KR is a waste of talent and too risky for one of our established WRs.

Stick Dorsett back there and see what he is made of...let him earn his stripes.

Donte has 32 receptions in the NFL, and 1 game with over 5 catches.  I'm a bit reluctant to say he is 'established' in the NFL.  He showed signs of brightness last year, but also showed plenty of areas where he has work to do.  I think the future for both Moncrief and Dorsett is bright, but at this point, neither has 'established' himself in the NFL.

I could see Moncrief being a good KR and Dorsett being the better PR.  Nowadays, with the new rules, most kickoffs are un-returnable (deep touchbacks or through the endzone).  If we have good blocking, elusiveness and agility are not as important on KR as they are on PR.  If we can open holes that Moncrief can just use his track speed to run through, he is longer and probably more apt to run 105 yards for a TD than Dorsett (even though Dorsett is very fast, he is not as long as Moncrief).  PR is a different beast, that usually requires agility and quickness right from the get-go, so I think Dorsett is probably a better option there.

Established? How is a second year player who only started 2 games, only 4 games with real contributuon, and got action only because of an injured and limited WR corp, qualify as established?
