Jordan Phillips vs Clemson

Wow.

Questions about NT ability are answered. Questions about motor and effort almost go away. And this dude's athleticism, at 6'5", 329 pounds, is just off the charts. Great, long arms to stack and shed, good hand work, has a swim move like no other. And a spin move, which is not something I want to see from my interior DL, but that doesn't mean I'm not impressed. And pursuit ability. There are some rough edges, he loses leverage, sometimes gets turned... I still think he'd be a better 3-tech than nose, but he can play all three DL positions.

This one is a couple plays after he left briefly with an injury: http://www.draftbreakdown.com/gif-embed/?clip=257249&gif=MarriedLikelyCanine

This is on the next series: http://www.draftbreakdown.com/gif-embed/?clip=257249&gif=MistyHighlevelArabianwildcat Remember,this dude is 329 pounds.

And there's more. Watch the tape.

You guys were right. I was wrong. He's a first rounder, and if he's there when we pick, we should take him. If he's playing 25 snaps/game for us at multiple positions, he's a winning acquisition.

What I like best besides his agility for a big man is that he is not the typical 340-350 pounders that you often hear people say you have to have for a D Lineman to play NT, People get to wrapped up in size

I really like at 3:00 min or so left in the 2nd qtr where he just takes a double team, drives them both backwards then splits them and sacks the QB. Good power and leverage. Then at about 58 second left in the second qtr where he just penatrates and stuffs the run. Very nice. Showed a little speed too for a big fella on the first play in the 3rd where he chases the ball down field on the big play. He was moving pretty well for his size. Good stuff!!!

For how big and athletic he is he sure gets handled easy a lot of the time. 2nd Round guy. Doesn't use his physical stature or athleticism to his advantage.

Thats certainly not what I see!!! I see him taking double teams, driving both guts back splitting them and getting to the QB.

Phillips definitely moves well for his size and has the ability to be a major force in the middle of the line.  However, don't get too crazy over him based on this Clemson game.  ......watch his other games and you'll see that for long periods of time, he isn't making an impact at all.  ....I've watched a few Oklahoma games specifically eyeing Philips as one of our draft targets......he too often leaves a lot to be desired.  The ability is there for sure......he just doesn't show it often enough.  ......considering the need for NT, i could live with him being our first pick......but i'd much rather have Malcom Brown or Eddit Goldman.

Goodness gracious you weren't lying. That's some quality tape. Whew.

Understand, I watched those tapes first. Those are my critiques of him, motor is inconsistent, makes some dumb plays at times, gets turned when he loses leverage (usually on the heels of trying to do something dumb), etc.

But the motor is there on the Clemson tape. Absolute dominance at times. Chasing guys down, blowing into the backfield, bull rushing, splitting double teams, batting down balls, etc. I know it's taboo around here to say anyone reminds you of Haloti Ngata, but I'll just say that I wouldn't be surprised to see this guy run back an interception or something...

Also, if he's splitting time between three positions, and limited to < 30 snaps, his motor isn't a question. He could take snaps from Chapman at NT, especially in passing situations, and get Chapman back down into the 25-30 snap range. I think he's a perfect fit for us.

I'm doing my profile on him right now (it'll be up in a few) and the comparison I came away with was Terrance Knighton.

I'll wait for the profile, but I'm more impressed with Jordan than I've ever been with Knighton. Maybe I need to rewatch the other games so I can calm down a little... lol

Yeah of the game I've seen, Clemson showcases how good he can be. Not as flashy in the other. Maybe the Clemson C was just that awful.

They doubled him some in that game. Didn't help.

But the least impressive tape I watched was his TCU tape. That center looked like the real deal (he's a senior in 2015, and on my radar), and they used both guards to chip and double. They weren't interested in letting him wreck the game, but a lot of credit to the center. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the center's play in the Clemson tape.

One thing I like about Phillips is how he takes advantage of his opponent's mistakes. If the blocker gets too upright, he'll bull rush. If the hand placement is sloppy, he'll use a variety of moves, including a rip/club move. Sometimes he puts his head down at the snap, which might be a fatigue issue, but other than that, his awareness seems really good.

Phillips is - I think - likely to get scooped up by a team like San Diego, Cleveland, or Baltimore. He's clearly one of the best D-linemen in the class. Shelton will definitely go before him, and there are other D-linemen like Malcolm Brown and Eddie Goldman that teams may or may not pick over him I guess but I'd be slightly surprised if he's still sitting on the board when we pick.
