How long will it take to get Peyton and the O back on track?

Once this CBA business is finalized and we get back to football, how long will it take to get the offense all back on the same page? I'm hoping that Peyton has been throwing the ball some in the off season, but unlike a normal off season, he has presumably not been practicing with his receivers. How long will it take them to gel?

That is the $64K question for all the teams. I would think with all the veteran leadership on the Colts things should come together pretty quickly. It will be a crap shoot for the rookies and the undrafted free agents though. I really thin that is where you will see some big gaps from prior years.

I think the receivers will be find but the O line will take a little time to get going. I would like to see the two rookies starting on the line along with Mac. and that G we drafted last year J Thomas this will add size and strength all around along with our blocking TE and a hard runner in the rookie running back should be a great O this year

With our offense being primarily vets we will be okay, the rookies on the line however will be bottlenecked from the lack of full offensive practice. Luckily there is a preseason to help that out as well though so I think we will be fine once green flag football starts(Yes that was a NASCAR joke haha)

yes Zebra3 i think they will be an improvement over last years less than 2 seconds. i think we need to start them early because they are the future. we have the best 2 de's in the nfl so they will get a taste of what their up against should know from pratice with these 2 if they can keep PM upright

Definitely! That 2 seconds last year was just downright brutal.

This stupid lockout out of all the things i care about, is going to affect the O-line first. We got two very talented Big Uglys, and Castonzo is going to start, but what about Ijalana. I don't think with this shorten offseason he will get the time to get ready for the NFL at all, at least in the RT posistion. He might be "ok" at guard, but this may mean that they will play less consistent and have to keep Diem around unless we replace him with CJ. Basically, it means that it will take more time for the O-line to gel...

Before his surgery, Peyton had quite a bit of throwing time with receivers. O-line is a question as well as Peyton's recovery from neck surgery. Manning Passing Academy starts tomorrow in Louisiana, so we should get some reports as to whether/how well he's throwing.

knowing Manning (well.. from a fan's perspective) he doesn't like showing off that much or giving the media stuff to talk about, i expect him to not throw that much at all, and might as well just let Eli demonstrate while manning recovers

I don't think it will take very long for the offense to gel. I know Peyton has those guys working out together anyways and Manning is famous for having the entire playbook memorized. He will be writing everything down for all of the offensive guys and making sure they practice game situations. One thing about this lockout is that coaches can't talk to players, but Manning knows the whole playbook, so he will be able to teach the rookies.

I recall Bill Polian at one point very feverishly stating that you can't draft starting quality offensive linemen in the second half of the first round, and seeing the way we hid Jerry Hugehs last season (or whatever we did with him) I'm quite skeptical we'll even see our first two picks.

I think I remember reading that before too. It makes sense with Hughes because of Mathis and Freeney being pro-bowlers. No one is going to take out 2 pro-bowlers just to give a rookie some experience, that's what preseason is for. With that said, we are much thinner on our O-line than we are at DE, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Castonzo and/or Ijalana starting from day 1.

I dunno. Like I just posted in the Mathis thread, we were pretty awful at DE depth last season, and the few times Hughes DID make it onto the field, he looked alright.

We need those guys starting, but until I see it, I'll remain skeptical. Hopefully the release of Ryan Diem will put an end to my skepticism.

I think the Colts will be fine. Might take a week or two to get our high powered offense to start performing like they should. The OLine just needs to stay healthy and they will be an immediate upgrade from last year. We had so many people shuffle from position to position that no one could get any sense of continuity. I'm hoping we hit our stride at the right time next year...the last half of the season leading into the playoffs :-)

Probably much, much less time than it will take teams that don't have a future HOFer under center!

I think teams like the Colts, Saints, and Patriots will benefit greatly because of their QBs. The lost time will likely have much more of a negative impact on teams with first, second, and third-year guys. Even good ones, like Bradford and Sanchez.

      Again, I’m not saying a good D isn’t needed…well, maybe I am….  But what I’m really saying is that with a great Offensive you can win with an average Defense.   And, as to your point, I think all the teams that lost in those games you mentioned all had very good defenses.

      Personally I think Thomas got pressed into playing before his time. He did a few things we didn't expect initially considering his draft position. I think ideally they wanted to take their time and train him up sorta like EJ Speed then get him out there.  I'm interested to see how he regroups to be honest.

      Look im not gonna say Ballard haven't had his own issues, but the guy has been put in an impossible position particularly every year.   2017 - He has a lame duck for a head coach when we all knew was gonna get fired and was drafting for his scheme so I'll give him a pass.   2018 - Arguably his best draft getting two All-pros and a stalwart at RT. He gets to sign his choice of a head coach and is left at the alter at the 11th hour which in hindsight was a blessing in disguise. Drafted Tyquan Lewis, Hines, and Franklin who all have or had great years here. Andrew Luck was back and playing like an MVP.   2019 - Horrible draft. No excuses. It was his worst draft as a GM, but he did find a gem in Speed. Luck retiring a week before the season starts would put any GM in a tough spot so once again I'll give him a pass.   2020 - His second best draft getting Pittman, Taylor, and Blackmon. Signed Rivers and traded for Buckner and won 11 games. Unfortunately lost to the Bills in the playoffs.   2021 - I honestly can't tell for certain what happened in terms of QB. Ive heard Rivers was supposed to re-sign, but choice to retire. I've heard he was pushed to retirement as the colts wanted to go in a different direction which was apparently Stafford before the Rams came in last second. I heard Reich pushed hard for Wentz saying he can fix him against the wishes of Ballard. If you ask me, I think Stafford was plan A as Stafford himself said him and his wife were so convinced he was going to Indy that they started looking at homes. When that fell through, imo Reich lobbied for Wentz. Whatever it was, Wentz was the guy and the QB carousal was supposedly stopped at least we thought. A god-like season for Taylor was not enough to save Wentz from ultimately being traded and you can chalk that one on whomever Reich or Ballard depending on what story you want to believe. In terms of the draft, Paye and Dayo have been reliable players on the dline, Granson you can make an argument is our best TE, and Fries came into his own last year.   2022 - Just an overall disaster of a season. Went the bandage route again at QB trading for Matt Ryan and you can say the colts did him no favors in terms of oline protection and JT getting hurt, but that was a failed trade for a miserable season. 2022 draft is still under elevation, but Pierce and Woods did show potential as rookies and Raimann looks to be the LT of the future.   2023 - Ballard finally gets to draft a QB to tether him to and Richardson plays a grand total of 12 quarters. It just seems like Ballard can not catch a break when it comes to QBs, but from I've seen from Richardson, I have very high expectations.

      Hi Colts fans,   Yeah, I know, I know.  I was just as surprised as you were.  No clue why my good friend Jim Irsay would call me up and offer me the head coaching job.  I had to remind him.  Dude, I said, you do know that I've never coached at all at the NFL level.  Not coordinator.  Not even position coach.  Nothing.  It didn't seem to matter.  It was as if all that was required was for me to be good friends with the owner, and -- bazinga! -- I could be a head coach.   It was awkward, you know.  That first coaches meeting.  There was Gus Bradley.  And there was John Fox.  Both of them had been head coaches.  Heck, both of them had coached in a Super Bowl!  Yet here I was, promoted to be their boss, having never coached before.  Ever.   But, you know, Bud Grant did it.  So, why not?  Remember, I have a way of doing things.   Ok, sorry, I couldn't help but giggle.  I have a way of doing... what, exactly?  Things?  Things like coaching?  I have a way of coaching?  And how did I develop that way?  By actually, you know, coaching?   Anyway, I'm glad you have a new head coach.  One who has actually coached before.  And his experience doing that is bearing fruit.  I'm just glad I'm already in the Ring of Honor.  Because after what happened, I doubt that I would ever be accepted in by the fans, regardless of how I was as a player.  Heck, they would have put Andrew Luck in before they would even consider me.   In the meantime, I'm back at ESPN, attempting to "un-burn" bridges.  It can happen.  I heard Bud Grant did that once....   Regards, Jeff Saturday
