Unfortunately, Griff Whalen was overrated. I was even hoping he would be like a Wes Welker or Danny Woodhead for the team, but he just doesnt have the ball skills, speed and football savvy to get separation and do any real damage. Catch and fall tactics dont usually get you employed in the NFL very long and he was a specialist at that.

Marvin Harrison did it pretty well. I remember him sliding down avoiding hits quite a few times

Drops as in statistical drops, not overthrows. He has comparable hands to DHB without the speed or size, and he cant even get seperation with his routes. Griff Whalen is just bad.

Andrew Mishler @andrewmishler

DHB has dropped 7 of 30 catchable passes this year, which is the second-worst drop rate in the NFL. It's like Donnie Avery never left.

There's no one comparable with DHB he's awful. At least Whalen can catch the ball when it's needed the most.

I wish Donnie Avery never left (never thought I'd say that), he was 20x more productive than DHB.

Donnie Avery is better then DHB but we would still complain about him( I know i would). Most of his passes from Alex Smith have been drag routes with YAC,  they rarely ever throw it pass 15 yards. Avery still drops passes and slants they both are bad, he's just not as bad.

Whalen is bottom 4 in the same category.

Correct, Donnie Avery isn't very good but he's a hell of a lot better than DHB.

He's still a better player then DHB regardless and he's great on 3rd down.

You're living in a fantasy land if you think the Colts would have released DHB over Whalen who has shown little to impress and is still practice squad eligible. DHB has been terrible but you can count on him sticking around until the end of the season and then he'll probably be cut in the offseason.

I think they're going to use Fleener outside at WR positions, a la Jimmy Graham and Vernon Davis in 3 wide sets, and try and create mismatches.

Because he was always drunk or hungover..please read article below.

http://msn.foxsports.com/lacesout/tom-zbikowski-had-no-problem-playing-with-a-hangover/

that was meant to poke holes in the idea we keep guys just because they are ex Ravens more than a real question.

We have 52 players on the active roster right now, Im expecting one of our 4 TE's currently on the active roster to be let go to free up another roster spot in case we have to sign someone we would actually need...since we don't need 4 TE's on the active roster such as Saunders......Maybe Corner....Jalil Brown. As to Whalens release, He has not done much to make himself safe from being cut since being brought up........Then again he would not have been the guy I cut either

We released Griff Whalen then pulled Justice Cunningham up to take the vacancy Griff Whalen left. How are we only at 52?

Coby Fleener

Jack Doyle

Weslye Saunders

Justice Cunningham

All are on the active 53 man roster now

I dont get it why you would keep 4 TE on the active roster.  Even if we run a two TE set, which we havent been doing a whole lot of, you still only need 3.  If one gets hurt...you still have your two.  if another gets hurt, doesnt matter because we have been running 1 TE sets enough.  I dont see 3 getting hurt in one game.  Even so.  We can do 4 wide outs.  Get rid of reed.  Hes a garbage receiver and a garbage returner.  The guy cant do anything right.  Keep rogers, i dont mind, keep Dhb, i dont mind.  But risk losing whalen who has better hands than both dhb and reed, just to keep a player who you were with on another team is outright selfish on pagano's part.  If that is the case.

need tall receivers in the red zone, justice is 6-3 and can block

I read a few posts then just skipped so if my ? mark is answered sorry. I have no problem with bringing him up from the practice squad, but waiving Whalen n keeping Reed though? I am not one of the "Whalen = god/ Welker 2.0/ Collie" guys but Whalen has actually done something positive for this team. What has Reed done? Sure that catch and second effort to try, yet fail, to reach the endzone  on one of his MAYBE 5 catches was noteworthy, yet 9/10(being generous) of his returns have been inside the 15 with a few being inside the ten.

Whalen hasn't been a "holy crap why was this guy on our PS?" guy, but he has made a few plays when they counted. I'm not about to burn a bridge and riot over the move, but what the heck ya know?

Maybe we release Reed and jalil Brown to sign Chris Rainey..... *shrugs shoulders* just throwing it out there

Haven't heard much about Rainey since we worked him out. Someone would have to go if we're gonna sign him

I like most people on this forum hope David Reed will be odd man out

Most of the thread has been trying to answer this lol.

From what I can surmise thinking about it:

1) David Reed is the return man. Period.

2) We dont need 6 WR on the roster. Whalen was actually doing very poorly, and they have decided its Da'Rick's turn to give the WR by council thing a whirl.

3) Whalen is still PS eligible. Reed is not.

I'm sort of wondering if we will be signing Whalen back to the practice squad for sure.  This practice squad WR with the last name Lenz seems to me to be a very similar player to Griff.  Why would we keep two Griff Whalens on the practice squad?  I'm wondering if it would be possible if they like Lenz a bit more than Whalen.  I'm probably off base, but just doing some thinking.

And i do not disagree with you on this.  But we need to be sure to get to the endzone and need some sure handed people.  More than just TY.  DHB and Brazil just are not as sure handed (IMO) than Whalen is.  Keep whalen, drop reed, put brazil in returner, and put in the tall TE's for the redzone.  Do not need 4 TE because youre only going to have 3 TE at most in a redzone formation and even that would be surprising.

As has been pointed out, Whalen has the 4th worst drop rate among WR in the NFL, making him decidedly one of the least sure handed recievers in the entire league.

I think one possibility may be another team wanted to sign Justice C and the Colts didn't want to lose out on him.

So they brought him up to the active roster.

The addition of Cunningham might means that someone else (Doyle, Saunders) is dealing with some kind of minor injury.

As for Rogers... Colts don't want to put 5-9, 173 Hilton on 6-1, 219 Peterson and slow Whalen on Mathieu in the slot. Maybe they want to put Hilton against Mathieu and somebody who is faster and bigger against Peterson? Fleener and Hilton down the seam?

That is actually a very reasonable scenario however from Doyles performance in the running game he isn't (shouldn't ) Missing any time on the field... I will say this TY has shown that size not a big factor in covering him (Legion of boom)
