Well thanks to everyone who have posted suggestions.  I appreciate it.

Now all we need is a WIN!

Bob

Whenever I have friends come in to visit for a weekend this is typically what we would do. All of this obviously depends on your budget and interests, but if money is not a problem then I would consider at least some of my suggestions below. I only included one chain suggestion otherwise the rest are all local. I didn’t include St. Elmo’s or some of the other places because everyone suggests that and I wanted to give you the opportunity to actually assimilate with some of the locals if you wanted. I know when I go on vacation I don’t want to do “touristy” stuff. People in Indy are generally pretty nice and like to have a good time.

Saturday Afternoon/Evening:

If you like craft beer Indy has a ton of them. They even have brewery tours that will take you around the city in “luxury.” They have six times on Saturday so plenty of time to try some delicious beer, meet new people, and explore the city. I would definitely recommend this as a great opportunity to drink good beer and just hang out. You might meet people to hang out with afterwards. http://www.brewerytoursofindianapolis.com/home.html

Saturday Dinner:

This is a newer restaurant that you and your wife would like as an evening meal, Blue Beard. Great location on Virginia Ave. and great food. Menu changes daily and they use local fresh ingredients. This is one of Indy’s rising chef stars. http://bluebeardindy.com/

The other saturday night dinner suggestion would be Plow and Anchor. http://plowandanchor.com/This location is still downtown but it is on the north side of downtown so you would want to take a quick taxi or Uber to get there. But, it would be worth it.

Saturday Night:

After dinner I would just explore the downtown area. If you like live music hit up the Slippery Noodle, a jazz bar right by your hotel. http://www.slipperynoodle.com/index.php

There is also a Howl at the Moon on Georgia Street that I like to go to whenever I’m in the mood for live music downtown. *This is a chain and I apologize, but it’s fun as hell. http://www.howlatthemoon.com/indianapolis/

On Saturday nights when the weather is good you can just get lost on Georgia Street and Meridian Street with the nightlife and just enjoy. Most people are there to have a good time and usually they do.

If beer is not your style and you prefer mixed drinks there is a good mixology lounge right by your hotel called Platt 99. https://www.thealexander.com/dining/plat-99-mixology-lounge

If you enjoy a good cigar with your cocktail, Nicky Blaines. http://nickyblaines.com/

Sunday Morning:

There are two very good brunch locations that I would highly recommend before the game:

Cafe Patachou: http://www.cafepatachou.com/

It is pretty cheap and delicious. They use local jowl bacon and it is wonderful (if you like bacon). Some of the best omelets you will have.

The other one is new and by another rising star chef Johnathon Brooks, Milktooth: http://www.milktoothindy.com/

My wife and I went here back in May and damn it was good. The drinks are funky and fun (I had no idea you could use beer in a bloody marry). Anyways, Brooks has been nominated as one of the best new chefs in the country and the location has won several awards already http://www.indystar.com/story/entertainment/2015/03/31/milktooth-best-new-chef/70719696/

Sunday Lunch:

For lunch I would do as others have suggested and go to the Colts Grille, http://coltsgrille.g3restaurants.com/

Then go find some people to tailgate with and enjoy the game! Lucas Oil is a great place to watch a football game. I have sat everywhere in the stadium and there isn’t a bad seat in the house, from the lower levels to the upper.

Let me know what you like and dislike about my suggestions and I can better tailor it to you and your wife.

Lots of nice, helpful comments here.

But yeah, since you're not familiar with the area, driving downtown could be a nightmare before and after the game. I'd suggest staying parked when you arrive at the hotel and make your way around via walking or taxi.

There's plenty to do within walking distance downtown. Circle Center Mall is worth checking out since it's right there. How about a carriage ride? Hope the weather is nice for you guys. Probably will be a bit chilly at night, but comfortable jacket weather!

Enjoy your trip and visit! Oh, and if you get bored, you can come by my house and play some Nintendo 64.

Likewise, this will be my first Indianapolis Colts game and I figure I'd pick "The Game" against the Patriots.  Fortunately, the Colts have won 3 in a row to bring excitement back and it will be amped up.  I arrive Sunday morning, should be checked into the hotel about noon, rest for a few hours, the go to the game.  I got the parking pre-paid, about a 10 minute walk the parking area.  On Monday, I'd like to drive to the Colt Complex, if I can get in to the parking lot or not, I will find out. Then I plan to take the Indianapolis Motor Speedway tour.  Then fly out Tuesday.

Besides the Colt shop in the mall.  Does you local Wal-Mart sell Colts paraphernalia and clothes.

The Colts complex is gated with security, so won't be able to get in. Walmart does have Colts gear, just nothing name brand. Kohls has the Nike colts stuff if that's easier. One thing people didn't mention, which I'm unsure of the days they offer it, but the LOS tour. It will get you in a locker room and on the field (obviously on non game days).

I've been a Colts fan all my life.  But I live in NJ.

For my last birthday, my wife presented me (and her) with tickets to the Denver game along with hotel reservations!!   So we're making a car trip to Indy.   Never been there before and believe it or not, haven't been to ANY game since a Houston Gamblers game in the 80's.

What we need is information and advice.  1. What to do or go on Saturday and early Sunday, and,  2.Game/stadium information.

Any suggestions as to what to do?   Maybe the Indy Trolley?   Any suggested places to see and eat?

Then, as to game day.......Its a 4:25 game.   Is there something in the stadium to see, stores, etc?  And what time should we go in?   Of course we want to take in the whole experience, so give us some suggestions.

I'm excited to see both Peyton and Luck play each other, no matter what the outcome.  I have my old #18 jersey.....would that be bad to wear it for this game?

Any advice as to things to bring?  We have binoculars, but would that be too much?

I'm basically clueless, so bring on the suggestions.  We're so excited and I thank my dear wife for such a great present!

Thanks

Bob

Doors open at the stadium 2 hrs before game time, so 4:25 game, doors should open about 2:25.  Lucas Oil is a phenomenal facility, definitely recommed walking around and taking it all in while you're there.  They have bands playing music, the Colts Pro Shop on the west side of the building. it's cool to go up a level and hang out at the landing in front of the large window (even better when it's open).  I like to get there early to get autographs and talk to some of the players before the game, always a cool experience!  Somebody else mentioned The Ram bar for food, I definitely recommend it or the Colts Grille.  Make sure you look up and follow the NFL's guidelines for what they will allow you to take into the stadium (women can't bring in big purses, things need to be in a clear bag, etc).

Most importantly, have fun, and Go Colts!!!  The last Denver game when Peyton returned home was probably the loudest I've ever heard LOS from start to finish, it was an amazing game!  Hope this one is the same!  Safe travels!!

Hi Everyone!

I am 26yr old LA native also making my first trip out to Indy from California for 10/25 vs Saints. I fly in Sat morning and leave Mon night (staying in downtown) Will be ubering to and walking off all of our beers :)

Looking for ideas/suggestions for:

Sunday Pregame & Postgame and Monday before 6pm return flight.

I can safely say there are not many of our brethren(vastly outnumbered at chargers and raider games) and it would be great to experience a full on tailgate but I am also that skinny guest that will eat and drink you out of house and home :P so perhaps local bar(s)/pub/resturant might be best?

I have seen tix for "Vip tailgate experience" would you recommend for $80 pp? More than welcome the oppertunity to talk to and meet any fellow fans as everytime I put on my #12, 88, or 13 and meet someone with Indianpolis roots its like meeting an old friend

Game day is fast approaching cant wait! Thanks in advance!

Isaac

Hey guys,

New to the forum.  5 of us are driving down from Toronto this weekend to watch the Pats game.  Some questions about tailgating:

1. Any suggested tailgating lots?

2. With the game being on SNF, what time will the lots open for tailgating?

3.  What time will the lots fill up by?

Thanks so much, so excited to watch this game!

Wow, fantastic info.  Thanks!

One thing we like to do is have a great dinner (not fancy food), forgo desert there,  then go walking and look for a specialized desert place/ice cream parlor.  It doesn't have to be fancy, just excellent.   Some of the best places we've been to are in beat up looking places, but homemade ice creams, etc.   Any ideas?

We love having breakfast since we don't usually make it for ourselves.   We'll check out those two suggestions.  Jowl bacon?  Don't think I've had it.

Is there a food that's special to the Indy area?

We'll park the car in the garage and try to walk everywhere.  If too far, we'll get a ride, but would like to keep it within a mile.  Is that reasonable?

We're not big bar people (our resistance is low, haha), but I can see us stopping in somewhere for a beer / drink and some bar food at night.

We're doing the Indy Trolley so that'll get us configured to the area, I hope.

Strange question;  If the roof is closed, and its November, what's the temp inside?    Is there a 'LOS Dog' or some other stadium food special to LOS?    I better bring the pepto.......

We're getting so excited!

Bob

I write shorts and a luck jersey to every home game the last 2yrs. That's why we always enter and exit thru the convention center. Only time I felt like it was cool was during manning return Gane which was a Sunday night with the roof and window open. Breeze was cool that night.

Bob, in that case here is my suggestion. Once you get checked into your hotel and are ready to explore I would go rent a bike for the day at one of the bike share stations. https://www.pacersbikeshare.org/ They have an app you can download, its cheap, convenient, they give you a lock for the bike, and it can be returned at any location in the city.

You can then use the cultural trail to go anywhere you want. http://indyculturaltrail.org/alongthetrail/

The restaurant I mentioned is right on the trail Bluebeard. It is themed based off the Indianapolis author Kurt Vonnegut, hence the name. http://www.yelp.com/biz/bluebeard-indianapolis

After dinner there is a nice Italian gelato/frozen yogurt/ice cream shop a block or two away called Café Nonna http://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-nonna-indianapolis.

From there you can bike up to Fountain Square which is a great neighborhood a few blocks up on the cultural trail from dinner and dessert http://discoverfountainsquare.com/. This offers art galleries, bars, shops, and entertainment as an after, after dinner snack :)

If you decide not to bike then I would say grab a quick cab to the restaurant. Its close but I'm not sure about walking distance close. Guess it honestly depends on how much you enjoy urban environments. I could/would do it, but I am young and love to explore urban areas...Unless it's cold! Once you get dropped off in the area though you can walk everywhere.

We'll park the car in the garage and try to walk everywhere.  If too far, we'll get a ride, but would like to keep it within a mile.  Is that reasonable?

I would say from your hotel what I mentioned is close to a mile; maybe a bit further but not much. That is why I suggest getting the bikes. You can bike everywhere, especially if you stay on the trail and a mile is nothing on a bike in downtown! Love the cultural trail. You might just decide to ride it around and make your evening spontaneous instead. Which is great because if you get lost just look for the stadium, you can see it from almost anywhere! Lol. And, not to worry downtown is very safe so if you did get lost you’re not going to be in a dangerous area.

We love having breakfast since we don't usually make it for ourselves.   We'll check out those two suggestions.  Jowl bacon?  Don't think I've had it.

Either of the two locations I mentioned will be delicious for breakfast. Milktooth is right by Bluebeard so you could scope it out the night before if you wanted.

Is there a food that's special to the Indy area?

Unfortunately, not that I know of. Maybe a breaded tenderloin? Delicious as a midnight snack or hangover cure but cannot recommend for dinner. lol

  • 3 weeks later...

Game day downtown you'll have fun just being around so many colts fans.  Just wandering around is fun

http://www.colts.com/stadium/pre-game-fun.html

Lots of food options near the stadium.  It just depends on how much you want to spend and what you like to eat

http://www.downtownindy.org/explore-downtown/eat-drink/

If you are a beer fan, micro brews are a big deal here: Sunking is big locally and they do tours http://www.sunkingbrewing.com/

If the weather is nice you can just walk around and see what strikes your fancy

As for saturday, it depends on what you like:

I love walking the canal if the weather is nice, all the museums are along the canal, you can rent bikes and paddle boats

http://www.indianatrails.com/content/canal-walk-indianapolis

There are some beautiful historic neighborhoods to just wander though: Lockerbie square is beautiful

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockerbie_Square_Historic_District

and it's right off mass ave (where there are a lot of restaurants & shops so you can wander around and see what suits you)

https://www.visitindy.com/indianapolis-mass-ave-arts-district

I like bazbeaux (pizza) and chatham tap on mass ave

http://chathamtap.com/

Great list of things there nadine...you could probably do a sticky with a list like that about what to do/eat/visit and you could update it as you see fit. I see this type of thread every so often...and if people have questions they could respond to it and get any more specific advice they may need. Nice job there!

I tried that once but it didn't get any traction

I just don't want anyone to be left hanging when they are new to the city and looking for things to do

gotcha...I don't know why but I often skip down past the stickies too...maybe we could do something to make them stand out more I don't know. I think it's just natural to look at the new topics...totally understand...want everyone to enjoy their visit.

Also....  No purses!!!  they allow a very small bag for wallet etc...  So unless your wife needs to carry something tell her to take ID and credit card and leave the purse in the room.  Same with binoculars, take them, leave the carry case in the room.

This is VERY important advice.  You get a small clear plastic bag barely larger than a sandwich and all must fit in there and be on view.  If the male half has big front pockets, put anything you can in there including Camera's which ARE allowed.  Depending on the weather the roof could be open or closed, but it likely won't be unpleasant if it is open.  They do like to mess with Peyton's mind and leave it open (he always demanded it be closed when he was here) so there's a small chance it will be open if the weather isn't nasty or too cold.  You can usually find that info out online to decide what to wear.

If you have any type of club seats, you'll have reasonably priced and good tasting food options, otherwise it is typical stadium food.  If you're staying in the hotel, ask ahead if they supply parking, if they do not, follow earlier advice on where to park free, everything is nearby.

There are some micro-breweries etc. with good food and some steak houses but all will be SLAMMED for this game, so just be ready for that.  Your hotel may have a restaurant that appeals to you.  The Rotating restaurant is a nice option, but I doubt there are still openings, but sometimes there are cancellations, same at other places.

I think you'll enjoy the Indy downtown gameday experience.... if you see a lot of hang dog faces, that's just our fans after another sickening Colts performance on National TV.  It may not bode well for a Colt's win, but it is likely the very last time anyone ever sees Peyton Manning play a game in Indianapolis, so no matter the score, it will be a timeless game and piece of NFL history.  A sad one for sure no matter who wins.

We're in the Comfort Suites hotel and will walk from there.

Bob

Great hotel, esp. location. You will have to pay for parking at hotel, but 4 weeks ago, the parking was also good for game day. There is outside parking at hotel plus there is a garage just a few yards away. It's all included in hotel parking. Check in, park your car, and never move it again (until you go home).

Game day, there is a great little bar very near hotel named Baseys. Lots of fans there. Will get crowded. Also, lots to see and do around stadium and in it.

You can walk downtown easily, or if weather is bad, hotel will probably give you a ride on their bus. Taxi not much from there, either. Tons of places there. Mall is really nice.

Arriving this afternoon from Winnipeg for the Colts / Broncos game tomorrow. Am stoked. Hope it's a season changing win for the Colts. Looking forward to seeing Manning. 1st time back for my son and I since the Chargers game in 2005.

Have fun! I hope you witness the Colts knocking off another undefeated Broncos team!

Thanks everyone!

Got to Indy, met a lot of Indy fans from all over the US and Canada!  The seats were fantastic and had some great fans seated next to us and behind.

Spent time touring Indy, walking around down town, walking up the soldiers and sailors monument, enjoying its civil war museum, then the War Memorial and its museum, a trolley ride, and tons of walking.  Colts grill was good.

Touchdown Town was fun.

So many nice people!

Great Canadian fans sitting next to us at the game.

Jack Skeleton dressed with a Colts jersey put the voo-doo on Denver!

Hotel was good, and the area was so busy with the band competition, concert and then the game.

And what a game!  Holy Cow!  I never expected a win!

Got my 'first game' and 'its my birthday' buttons.  So cool.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hope the 2 fans I talked to got new seats..........

Hi nnjcoltsman! So glad you and your wife had a great time! I'm one of the two colt fans you talked to at the stadium. My wife and I ended up at the security office along with the couple that had the same tickets. Security said their tickets were valid and ours were fake. How they know this I don't know. Our tickets were scanned just like theirs but we were the ones who got escorted out of the stadium. We went to the Crowne plaza and found Stub Hub who after apologizing profusely issued us new tickets in the end zone section 125. We got to our seats about halfway through the 1st quarter. Like you, I have been a colts fan all my life and like you this was my dream trip to Indy to see the colts live. We were very disappointed with the results. We purchased our tickets in April 2015 and gave a lot of money for good seats but we had to settle for what was available. Also, stadium security was unconcerned about our dilemma. IMO the stadium should have a contingency plan in effect for this. Anyway, the people in downtown Indy were very friendly and we had a good time with the exception of the tickets.

What a great trip my son and I had! Very impressed at how much more developed the downtown Warehouse district was, as compared to our last trip 10 years ago. Lucas Oil Stadium is perhaps the nicest stadium I've ever been to. All the people we met were all so friendly. A pleasure to meet the season ticket regs in section 614, row 7. And what a GREAT game! Btw, St. Elmo Steak House was FANTASTIC! Looking forward to my next trip to Indy. Hopefully not a 10 year gap in between this time!

Man what a day you had. You got to witness Andrew's best game of the season, Colts beating the Broncos, a great stadium, friendly fans, and St Elmo's is awesome food! Very nice! I would call that a great day to remember.

We were wondering what happened to you guys.  The other couple came back and they were not smiling.  I wonder what the deal is with stubhub?  How can that big organization pass through phony tickets?   We bought ours through ticketmaster.  Phony tickets probably happen all the time, I could imagine.  You got a refund, and then had to pay again for the end zone tickets?   Regardless, we enjoyed talking to you and your wife.  What a coincidence to 'meet' on the forums here.  Though the end zone tickets were not as good as the originals, it sure was a fantastic game!

We just got back late yesterday (11/11/15)  Man, thats a lot of driving.  1626 miles in total.   I think we'll try the train 'next' time!  Keep in touch.

I recommend the carrot cake with a scoop of vanilla at the Colts Grill.   Its huge and delicious.   We barely finished it, and after 37 years of marriage, my wife found out that I like carrot cake!!!!!   I guess there's still 'mystery' after all these years!!!

The good news is we climbed the stairs, all 334? at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument the next day to work that off.
