TY Hilton Contract Speculation (Merge)

I like TY, but I think they should be willing to let him go.   And I do think that impacted the choice to draft Dorsett.  I hate to say it, but the Pats have been the best at cap management for a while now, and one thing they're consistent about is they never spend big $ on WRs.

The Pats aren't any better at cap management than the rest of the league in general. They avoid cap issues, but that's hardly rocket science. It's also helped by Brady having a team friendly contract.

I'd also note that one of the biggest things that's held the Patriots back is their not being willing to pay WRs and DBs.

I know T.Y.'s agent is one that has a bad rep for trying to "pull all the $$ he can". But I guess that is his job.  But T.Y. does deserve a new contract, and before the season starts to boot.

You would think that giving him a new contract this year would be a selling point to having a less overall contract than waiting til next year.

Say he wants an 7 mil/year for 4 year contract.  Wouldn't he make more money in the long run to sign THIS year for 6 mil /year for the same amount of time? it would seem as a leverage point on the Colts side to me.

Another question is this:  what do the Colts and T.Y. think of his position?  Do either believe he is a true #1 receiver?  I love the guy, fast, hands, and learning good route running abilities, but he has had SERIOUS issues with breaking out and getting open when he is double teamed.  Alot of that is because of his body type.  Most true #1's can find a way to get open when double teamed, granted they are almost ALL larger receivers as well.  This effects his worth in terms of salary.

Either way, I truly hope they are able to come to a mutual understanding and are able to get a contract done.  He has a good rep with Luck, and his youthful experience is an underrated benefit to the team.

FYI I merged this with another topic discussing Hilton's contract future.

yeah they do not spend big $$ on wr's.  But cap management is in the eye of the beholder:

Dead money this year:

Kyle Arrington $3,250,000 Logan Mankins $4,000,000

Darrelle Revis $5,000,000

I think all this talk in this thread about a contract in the 7-10 mill per year range is Fantasy Land talk....     seriously.

We had a shot at getting him for Randall Cobb money (4/40) when his agent WASN'T Drew Rosenhaus.

But once Hilton went back to Rosenhaus we all had better brace ourselves....  he's going to want very, very big money.

Hilton is now waiting on guys like Bryant, and Thomas and Green.    Those guys are looking for $$ in the teens per year, with Bryant reportedly looking for 17 mill per.

If Hilton really sees himself as a true #1 instead of a 1a who plays in the slot like Randall Cobb,  then he's going to be looking for more than Maclin got (5/55) and probably closer to 12/13 mill per year.

TYH is going to be expensive if we want to keep him.    Very expensive.

I'd love to get him on a 5 year 40 million with 20-25 guaranteed. But if settle for a contract like Vontae's

Reread NewColtsFan's post above you... That's where this contract is likely to escalate to. TY is going to be hunting for Dez/AJ/DT money which is going to be upwards of 12+/year.

Not really, we can't void the year he currently has on his contract.  We can add new money to it but usually that's in the form of a signing bonus.

For the record if TY signed for 7 mil a year I would do a happy dance.  10 Mil a year would be a bargain at this point and realistically we're probably looking at 12 to 13 Mil per year for TY.  Jeremy Maclin just had his first 1000 yard season this last year and prior to that had 4 seasons without going for 1000 yards.  Much of it apparently due to injuries.  He got 11 MIL APY from KC and got 22.5 Mil guaranteed.

TY already has 2 straight 1000 yard seasons and has no notable injury problems.  If he gets through next season without major injury and puts up a nice 1200 yard season or so.  He's seriously looking at a 12 to 13 mil per year payday with quite a bit of money guaranteed.

Yeah. that 7 mil i quoted was just for reference.   But i seriously do not see Indy giving him 13 mil/year.  He is a great players for us yes. and a major deep threat.  But let's face it, he does have serious problems with double coverage.  He just disappears. Now, I do not think he'll have to worry too much about that this year due to the talent on the field with him now.  But in order to keep that talent in the long run (Dorsett, Moncrief, Carter'maybe'), he will have to lower that total some.  In single coverage, he is a nightmare.  And he can ensure single coverage's for the future by not allowing his "money grubbing agent" to take over the negotiations.  I personally see him getting a Antonio Brown/DeShon Jackson type deal. 8-10 mil/year.  Since he is similar to those receivers.  He is not a Calvin Johnson/Dez Bryant/Demaryius Thomas style receiver.

I think we'll be lucky to get him for 8 to 10 mil per year.  With TY's production and his reliability . . . I see him getting a lot more.

But you are saying 13mil/year.  That would make him the 2nd highest paid wr in the NFL.  He is not the 2nd best wr in the NFL.

Welcome to the world of market setting contracts.  Every time a top player comes close to FA they usually set the market for a position or come close to it.

Luck is not the best QB in the NFL but he will likely set the market and be the highest paid one.  Why?  Because salary cap expands and when a top player hit's FA he's usually able to set the market.

TY Hilton may not be the 2nd best WR in the NFL.  But I have a feeling he'll be up there.  Remember also that Dez and DT are going to be looking for contracts too.  One of those guys is going to push the market, probably higher then the 12 to 13 that I think TY will get.  I'm guessing at least one of them gets 14 M APY.  TY will push for just a shade under that.

Actually it may be smart of the Colts to get the extension done early before the market is set by one of those guys.

But Dez, DT, and CJ, are all different type of monsters.  top notch Size receivers get the 11-13 mil contracts.  Antonio brown, Deshon Jackson, T.Y. are the smaller burner types.  Those types whom are top notch get the 7-10 mil contracts. They are paid differently.

Did you have a look at Mike Wallace's contract?  He signed that I think in 2012 with the Dolphins and no longer has a signing bonus attached but when he did it was HUGE.  I believe outside of Fitz and Calvin Johnson it was a market setter.

When Antonio Brown signed his contract he wasn't putting up nearly the numbers he has recently.

yeah, that is an overpaid WR..period.  entire NFL knows this.  Wallace got a contract off of speculation only.  Because the team wanted to sign a 'hopefull' playmaker and since there was not alot of those at that position floating around, they overpaid to make sure they had him.

In Wallace defense he has 15 td's the last two years and no doubt goes over 1000 yards receiving with ease with a better QB, Now he probably falls off the football map unless Bridgewater makes a massive jump in Minnesota

I love TY, but I think we should let him walk if he wants over 11M a year. The fact is that good quarterbacks can make due with average WRs. How do we know that TY would be considered just as good if he had played for the Texans all these years?

Grigs is good at drafting receivers. So why are we going to pay through the nose for one when WR is one position that rookies can come in and be immediately successful?

I think the smart business choice is to be open to letting him walk if the money gets stupid.

Let him go and save for defense. Otherwise we are recreating "star wars" offense from the Polina era.

TY isn't going anywhere. And I think he would take a 4 year 40 million deal from us instead of signing with some loser team like Oakland for 12 million per. I mean when we're talking about this kind of money, what's really the big deal in 10 million a year or 12 million a year? LOL. Either way he and his family are set for life. A lot of guys are greedy and will sign with another team for 1 or 2 million more. I don't think TY will be like that. He's gonna be a Colt for a long time.

I agree that Brown is the cream of the crop when it comes to smaller burner receivers.  I was just comparing that the small speedsters are a different breed than the larger, versions of receivers and are paid differently.

Size, sure, everything else? TY isn't but a halfstep behind. I don't think he's going to get the 14/15+ like the others are, but I wouldn't be surprised if a handful of teams are ready to give him 12-14/year. I like TY, and I think this is where we agree, I'm not too keen on giving him that 12-14/year money.

If Ty was going to accept 4/40,  I think he'd already be signed by now.

What I'm hearing and reading is that TY is waiting for the bigger name #1's around the league to get their new deals so that his deal is more obvious.    Even if he's not getting 14-16,  he's going to want more than 10.     You don't re-hire Drew Rosenhaus if you're willing to sign for 4/40.     Rosenhaus means he wants every dollar he can get.

I don't like it either,  but that's the reading of the Tea Leaves....

And actually for comparison to whomany think is the best wr in the league Calvin Johnson...Hilton actually has more yards receiving through his first 3 years in the league then Johnson did.....Johnson 3071 yards...Hilton 3289....And Hilton only had 2 less TD's then Johnson 19 to 21...That's with Hilton starting 14 less games then Johnson did his first 3 years (40-26)....Just a guess but I don't think Hilton gets any less then 5 years and 60 mill with 35-45 mill guaranteed

Guarantees are running about 30-60 percent,  but I think, for the most part (not 100%) the only players getting more than 50% guaranteed are QB's....   I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but not many.     Most guarantees for the majority of big name players I think run 30 to 50 percent.

Then, there's the JAG player....    he might get a decent contract,  but with very little guaranteed...  perhaps 5-20 percent or so....

This is a long way of saying that while I agree, Hilton getting 5/60 is quite possible, I don't see him getting $35 Mill guaranteed.

I'd think 30 is the high end, and 25-30 is likely.....

And since we're talking dollars,  I'll say all this is just my two cents!!

Exactly all he needs is the Broncos or the Cowboys to give in and give Dez or DT a market setting contract, someplace around 14 mil or so and TY will just aim a hair under that.  I really think we're looking at 12 to 13 M apy.  (For the purposes of this discussion I'm looking at Calvin Johnson's contract as an outlier.  A 14 M apy contract would set the market for every other WR.)

10 Mil is not going to cut it to get TY.

T.Y. does not get into the end zone like the top WRs manage to do...he had 7, 5, 7 TDs in his 3 years

here...meanwhile Fleener had 8 TDs and Allen had 8 TDs.

He had big yardage last year but that can be picked up by the other receivers.

We all love T.Y. but he is not in the same league as Calvin, Dez, Damaryius,

Nelson, Beckham, et al...Hilton is "Tier 2".

Exactly, T.Y. cannot take the "fade routes at the corner of the endzone", like Dez, Megatron, A.J., ect.  He is like what all small burner receivers are,..yardage eaters.  He gets you to the red zone, but once there, he is limited.

Also, Dez said he was happy with 13 mil year.  Just wants a multiple year contract, instead of a franchise tag for security.  I see Dez getting 13 mil /year, Thomas 12, and T.Y 10ish.

Is T.Y. a top 10 receiver? yes, and 10 mil/year would put him in the top 10 paid category also.

I actually believe smaller receivers can run that corner of the endzone fade route and be successful/great at it. Shorter receivers just have to run the route different. Marvin Harrison was great at that Corner endzone fade.

Marvin's hands, route running, and 'noodle legs' though were also beyond compare.

People on this board are living in la la land if they believe TY is going to settle for $10 m per year. The shelf life for NFL players is very short because the risk of injury is so high. At any time their career can be over. You get the most $ you can, and maybe, maybe, you give your team a bit of a home town discount, but that won't be much. In the end, its a business. Period. The agents aren't worried about anything except getting their clients and themselves paid. That is their job.

TY is unquestionably worth $12 m+ per year. I have my doubts if the Colts can pay him that with Luck's contract; Costanzo's contract; the Tight Ends, etc. TY is not a max type WR. $17m per year is not going to happen. If the Colts could get him to take under $12m per year, they might be able to make it work cap-wise. But don't hold your breath. I think he's likely gone, simply because he's great and some team with lots of cap space is going to throw some big bucks at him.

The selection of Dorsett wasn't just because he was the "best player available".

Hopefully that gets rid of all the trade speculation around T.Y.

Up next Castonzo, Luck, Allen/Fleener, and Chuck!  :D

It really does nothing of the sort.

I don't think TY gets traded but this Irsay talk does not cement his long-term future in Indy at all.
