Defense wasnt ready for texans

The Texans' offensive coordinator came in with a great game plan.  Most of their running was outside the tackles, which is running away from the Colt DTs which is the strength of their run defense.  Bradley needs to figure out how to adjust and defend outside zone running.

He has a job because he is Ballard's guy. The Irsays are  going to have to kindly order a change.

Who on Gus's staff would take over? I wouldn't think the ancient LB or DB coaches.

We will see how the first 6 games go.

Then a change all the way from Left Field, we go Chuck Strong. haha :spit:

I think the strategy, and the correct one, was to focus on stopping Stroud and the passing game not Mixon.  Joe Mixon is a an average running back that cost them a 7th rd pick.  Not a player you would focus on.

Mixon is not average

Something I find a little amusing about all this whining about the defense. On December 10th 2006 we went to Jacksonville and gave up 375 yards rushing on 42 carries. What happened later that season? Oh yea, we won the super bowl. Too many of you people on here who obviously know more than Chris Ballard and Shane Stiechen need to get a grip. I don't like the bend and always break defense any more than the next guy, but it's what we have played for the past 52 years. It is what it is.

Running against the Colts is something we are not used to.

Maybe the Texans are a little better than some of the fans in this forum thought?

IMO the game was lost due to poor coach calls rather than bad play from the players

Perhaps. I think there were some mistakes made coaching. Some aggressive moves made that didn't work out. But ultimately I think the Texans made more plays than we did, especially in key moments that were the difference in the game. That last throw and catch Stroud to Collins on 3rd down to put the game away was one heck of a play... and a matter of inches... and one that had it gone the other way could have very well led to an entirely different outcome in the game. It's a game of the smallest margins, and the Texans made the necessary plays.

Well let's not forget that Gus wanted to leave the Colts for another DC position but was blocked by Ballard.

For a lateral move like that you have to get the permission of your current team.

You reap what you sow

Ballard needs to follow him out the door.

Didn't hear about this, do you have a link/Source?

If he wasn’t average why would you trade him for a 7th rd pick.  There was no spot on the roster for him.

Cindy took the 7 rather than cut him and get nothing.  RB’s are devalued, which you know.

In his first 7 seasons, Mixon has 4 years of rushing over 1,000 yards and he’s rushed for 50 TD.   He’s got another 13 TDs receiving.   There’s nothing average about him.

I’d guess he’s ranked somewhere between 10-16.

I think it was a combination of both. Players didn’t execute, for example on those two separate occasions where we have them on third and long you allow them to convert for a fresh set of downs. IMO that was completely unacceptable. Play-calling / coaching was very questionable as well.

Bradley said they had a lighter box to try and stop the passing attack. it was working 4 sacks 10 pressures

Texans staff saw this and changed to a heavy run offense

We just didn’t adjust out of fear for their passing attack

when you have specialists at DT the other teams see that and archangels the play calls

and of course we had to give up the mandatory 3 and longs

Instead of being happy with 3rd and long I cringe and just wait to see how our opponent gets the 1st downs Just can’t seem to get off the field

Seems like Bradley's defense did neither.  Ballard hasn't fixed the secondary and our LBs weren't getting to Nixon.

This is nuts. What did we go get Davis for?

I would say the obvious answer is Davis missed the vast majority of the preseason and preseason games.  Pretty hard to be effective when you can’t practice or play.  I find it hard to rush to judgment on a player after one game and those circumstances.

Bryan should  not be on this team. He is playing out of position when they ask him to be a run stuffer. I agree he does have to get back into football shape.

Dungy changed tactics telling Freeney and Mathis to play run first instead of trying to rush the QB and they got Bob Sanders back. Steinchen is no Dungy and there's no Bob Sanders coming to the rescue.

Key is for them to be able to play both Run D & Pass D decently. The colts D is  built to play the run better than the pass and should try that game plan this Sunday going against a inexperienced unproven Willis who's looked terrible so far in his limited career. But I wouldn't be surprised if packers receivers, TE's, and RB's be open with lots of cushion making even Willis look good, which usually happens against backup QBs haha

We sold out to stop CJ and expected our run D to hold out.  “Tackle the runner on your way to the QB” approach.  Obviously wrong.  Wore the D out.  Hopefully they learn.

I was think how TTUN beat us when we had CJ at The OSU.  CJ had plenty of yards (and in my opinion, better skill players than he has now).  So how did we lose?

They ran the ball, and were more concerned about scoring and time of possession than they were about CJ, MHJ, Wilson, etc.   Just don’t give the offense time to score and wear down their D.

In other words, the game plan Houston used.  Definitely out coached.

After thinking what happened in texas game it seems we were all to focused on the texans passing game and wasnt ready for the run game. I hope next week and moving forward we stay fully focused on the WHOLE game because thats what really matters.

We clearly weren’t ready for the pass either. Defense focused and then let them run/pass wherever they wanted. They punted only 2 times. Scored every other possession. Like what, 6 scores?
