The NFL says it is aware of the arrangement and has taken no action, despite questions from some specialists in sports law and economics about whether teams should pay for services by for-profit companies owned by their active players and whether the relationship provides value to Brady that should be counted against the club’s salary cap.

Interesting to say the least, but I think when you are getting paid the FMV by the team to do something aside from playing that shouldn't count against the cap. Many athletes across many leagues have tv shows or radio shows in affiliation with their team (on stations owned by their team) and get paid by the owner/team to perform on the show on top of their salary for playing the sport, despite having a show because of playing the sport for the team. I don't know how Brady is involved financially (if he is) minus the fact he's a partner as there is not a lot of info on it but NFL is wise to not investigate him again.

Pretty much a non-story IMO. I doubt the NFL makes any changes next season to these types of relationships with regards to the cap.

checks calendar...yep - Playoff time is here and New England is once again one of the favorites...time to gin up a fake controversy. All anyone needs to read from the article is the following:

The NFL says it is aware of the arrangement and has taken no action, despite questions from some specialists in sports law and economics about whether teams should pay for services by for-profit companies owned by their active players and whether the relationship provides value to Brady that should be counted against the club’s salary cap.

It gets sillier every year.

I agree. I think of Henrik Lundqvist getting paid by MSG (network owned by team owner James Dolan) to star in a show last year. People questioned that to Rangers beat writers who explained he's getting FMV of a person who performs on a show despite the fact it's owned by the guy who pays him to play hockey. That's where I drew my similar take from.

I posted the exact same quote first. It was posted by Boston Globe so not trying to stir up controversy because it's "playoff time".

I didn't say YOU were trying to stir up controversy...I'm saying the media is trying to stir it up. As you pointed out, the NFL is aware of this and doesn't have an issue with it...therefore, there is no "story" to even be reported. However, thank you for sending me a PM trying to spoil the ending to Star Wars for me. That was very classy of you.

This is more of a negative statement on Brady than it is on the Patriots.  The patriots can choose to use a medical facility of their choice, that most likely does provide some benefits.  Brady on the other hand is knowingly in partnership and promoting a guy who has had federal sanctions placed against him.  Brady is basically agreeing with Guerrero's business practices of lying to make money.  Brady doesn't seem to care about honesty and integrity and putting a truthful product out there.  Just wants the money.  But I think we all knew that already.

His association with Guerrero is unsettling, but I think Brady buys into this crap for real. The guy has a bazillion dollars, so I highly doubt he's entering into a "get rich quick" scam...I actually think the guy believes that you can drink liquefied greens and not get concussions. He wouldn't be the first celebrity type to fall for bizarre crap. Heck...look at Scientology...

Why in the world would this be of any concern to anyone? It's their business I guess they can do what they like.  It's not like they are a government body with responsibilities to constituents.

Who asked the 'specialists in sports law and economics' to weigh in?  My guess somebody looking to stir up a story.

It's interesting as Brady probably makes a commission from having the Pats pay the guy (as he was able to get him the job despite not having a physical therapy license) so Brady is essentially getting paid more than stated in his contract by the same organization. It's not the first time something like this has been brought up (see my post above) which is why I think it's nothing since we've seen it before. Just interesting Boston globe of all papers report it trying to stir something up.

They are paying a company that is owned by brady.    The question is are they circumventing the salary cap by doing so.    I don't think the company is getting paid enough for it to be an issue though

Hilarious.  If he really believes this, shouldn't someone check him for Concussion?

I try not to judge, but it's definitely some pretty out there stuff. But he's hardly the only person in the country to buy into homeopathic "medecine". He grew up in California, so that might explain it.

Do you know anything about homeopathic medicine?.

What has growing up in california has to do with anything?.

Honestly I don't think much of it. But at the same time, it is weird that Brady is  known for taking big pay cuts to help reduce his cap number. I mean, they are HUGE pay cuts.

Back when John Elway got his superbowl rings they Broncos were known for paying their players on the side, so that way it didn't count against the salary cap, it does somewhat add up.

I haven't got any problem with people making whatever decision on their medical care they feel is appropriate. I have personally used some alternative medicines/herbal supplements etc with varying degrees of success. That said, I think the notion that Brady is able to "stave off" concussions because he drinks liquefied greens is kind of absurd. I could be 100% wrong about that - it's just an opinion from someone who isn't in a line of work where concussions don't happen routinely. What I can say for sure having heard him interviewed on this topic is that HE believes it. Guerrero may well be a con artist, but Brady has bought into this completely.

Oh relax...it was just an offhanded comment playing on the stereotype of Californians being more "earthy crunchy" types than the rest of us. If you are from California and you were offended, please accept my humble apologies.

The other thing people should keep in mind about this non-story...obviously, the "implication" here is that shenanigans are going on with the salary cap. But Brady signed an extension in 2010 that went out through 2014 and made him the highest paid player in football http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5552561

When that deal expired, he was 37, and the Pats hadn't gone to a superbowl since 2011. So for him to take a lower deal in 2014 as a 37 year old wasn't really all that head scratching. Could he have signed elsewhere for more? Yes of course he could have. But his performance the past 2 seasons since they signed that deal have been at a higher level than the tail end of the last deal, plus they drafted his supposed replacement.

Bad Monty he ABSOLUTELY believes this stuff works. Does it? I have no idea. That said it is one business paying another business that their QB is partners in.

Also Brady doesn't need the money between him and Wifey they are BILLIONAIRES just like any OWNER. Brady plays because he loves the competition and the game I am guessing when he doesnt enjoy it anymore he hangs them up.

Right. If Brady takes a pay cut, but he and the Pats have a handshake agreement that they'll use a vendor that he owns, that's circumventing the salary cap, and it's against the rules of the CBA.

I don't particularly care about whatever this is, and if it's not a noteworthy amount of money then it's probably not worth even reading about. But there are specific rules about off-books compensation to players. Stuff like this should be arms-length.

There's little doubt in my head that Brady is superfit for a man of his age, especially one who gets hit as often as he does. I also don't know how you can think he's unintelligent. He's probably the most intelligent QB in the league....

Because it's possibly a way to pay Brady without it counting against the cap.  And the amount doesn't matter.

Here is a quote from PFT

" NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell distributed a memo to all 32 teams today emphasizing that all non-contract bonuses are violations of league rules.  "

It doesn't matter how much money he makes from it, it's a violation of league rules that is why it's a story.  Whether it remains a story is yet to be seen.  For example, if the Pats had contracts with this guy before Brady or before Brady started using his products, then it's a non issue.  That would mean Brady tried what the team provided, liked it so much he bought into the company or decided to start a business with Guerro(sp??)  But if that's not the case then it could be a real issue.

The article made it clear that both the league and the NFLPA have been aware of the arrangement and have no problem with it. Nothing to see here.

That is incorrect (not surprising) the article made it clear that the NFL is aware of it.

Quote" We are aware of the arrangement and have not determined that there is any violation of the CBA [collective bargaining agreement].’’

And

" The union and the NFL declined to discuss the matter in detail. "

So no where does it say anything about "no problem" with it.

Fair enough. However logic suggests that if all parties acknowledge being aware of the arrangement and no actions have been taken to stop it, then it's a pretty safe bet that nobody has a problem with it. Should that change, then I am certain that the league would inform the Patriots of that at which point they would take the necessary steps to end the arrangement as it currently exists.

My point is simply that this doesn't appear to be anything the Patriots have done without informing the league, so it's pretty hard to make the case that some are already making that "they're cheating again".

You seriously think Brady is UNINTELLIGENT?     Really?

Wow,  that is some serious Brady-hate!

He's got a Luck-level wonderlic score and I'll bet a high I-Q.

What has he done that would tell you he's unintelligent?

Based on...?

He has his own business, is known to be incredibly intelligent financially, was an Honors student at Michigan, a great school, etc..

This trainer is clearly helping Brady stay fit.  He has been moving and running better than he ever has; he now does a great deal of yoga, increasing his flexibility.

Something is clearly working.

Or it just means they have not had time to investigate.

Like I said, if the Pats used his services before Brady bought into the company then it really is a non issue, IMO.  But if he got his training room, sideline access and fees after Brady bought the company, especially if it happened after Brady signed his last contract then it's worth looking into.
