Josh Gordy Film Review

Ben Gundy of ColtsAuthority does a nice job breaking down Josh Gordy.

"In his limited role last year, Gordy was terrific in coverage. According to PFF, among cornerbacks who played at least as many regular season coverage snaps as Gordy’s 135, only Seattle’s Richard Sherman and Byron Maxwell, New England’s Logan Ryan and Tennessee’s Alterraun Verner allowed a lower passer rating than Gordy’s 57.3. Only Sherman, Tampa Bay’s Darrelle Revis and Denver’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had more snaps per reception allowed than Gordy’s 15.0 (Verner was also at 15.0). Not a bad couple of lists to crack."

Tbh I always thought of Gordy as a bit of dead weight but looking at the film from last year he does surprisingly well and i'd be shocked if he doesn't make the roster this year. And if he does it must be because there are better players than him which when you go in to detail can only be a good thing.

It's not even a PFF grade. It's a summary of catches allowed and passer rating against. It means plenty.

Gundy may be my favorite Colts blogger.  He always puts a disclaimer on his work, he doesn't know the player's responsibility on every play.  But he evaluates what he sees for every play.

Excellent article, as all of his are.

catches allowed and passer rating against are bad stats. You really can't use it to judge a db

Right.  We should judge them on how they look in a swimsuit and their musical talents.

Dudeski, you make me laugh with your comments, hope I'm doing the same.

While that is encouraging we have to remember he got those stats covering probably the #4 receiver on the other team.

Most of the stats are from covering #4 WR's yes, but remember the Greg Toler guy was hurt so Gordy now becomes the #3 when the #2 goes down thus making him cover #3 WR's and #2 WR's as he did vs the Chiefs in KC

I always thought that when he came in he was immensely better than Vaughn. Of course, in retrospect that is probably not very hard to be.

The sad thing is, Cassius Vaughn was actually good in coverage. And by that I mean he was always with his man, he just could never make a play on the ball. Never turned his head. And when he did turn his head, he was mistiming his jumps like that wide open pick he should've had last season vs Denver that ended up being a big gain for Decker I think it was

I must have watched the second half of the Chiefs playoff game at least 10 times.

Does anyone else wonder how they could have left Gordy alone on Bowe for that last pass?  Didn't everyone on the Colts sidelines know where the ball was going?  A slightly better pass and the Chiefs win that game.

Bethea didn't have a great game IMHO, and it looked like he was out of position.  I don't have the All 22 so I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, Gordy had a pretty good game, all things considered with the injuries.

Bethea had a horrible game indeed

And on the last play, there should've been a safety over top. Gordy had good coverage but like you said, a better throw and we don't even go to New England. Either a better throw or better awareness by Bowe would've sent us home.

If I had to bank on it, we probably ran a cover 1 that play. I hope we didn't cause that makes no sense in that situation so it was either that or a safety was outta place

no it doesn't. Those are horrible stats. Very misleading and useless

There's nothing misleading about those stats unless you think they're claiming to be conclusive, which they are not. Those stats by themselves, however, can help measure and compare the effectiveness of cornerbacks.

I've always said I liked Gordy better than Toler. Plus there's no drop off in play when Gordy comes in for Toler every time Toler gets hurt.

These numbers are really encouraging! Go Gordy!

The problem is that we went to Cassius Vaughn and then Darius Butler, both of whom struggled at that outside corner spot. Gordy played well.

I think Gordy's coverage on that play was perfect. A few plays prior, Bowe was open down the same sideline, and Smith overthrew him. But on that final pass, Gordy's positioning was great, and even with a better throw, it would have been highly contested.

Bowe was only a half foot from being in. Yes, great coverage, but he still caught the ball.

My question is - where was the safety over top? Everyone had to know they'd go to their best WR against a backup CB, right?

Maybe a coverage mistake, or maybe a lot of faith in Gordy...

I'm guessing the former. It's funny, I still get a thrill when I watch that play. As if Bowe just may catch it in bounds this time.

Second best game in Indy Colts history, IMHO.

Here's why I respectfully disagree:

1) This play was run after the two minute warning and a KC timeout. The coverage would have been very clear in everyone's mind.

2) The Colts were in single high coverage, with Corey Lynch as the deep safety. Bethea was in the box, Landry was out of the game. (So either way, it wasn't Bethea's blown coverage, but I agree with you about his play in this game, and several other games last year. He wasn't good in coverage, IMO.)

3) The Colts showed the same look prior to the timeout, with a blitz look. The Chiefs responded after the timeout by moving the RB to the left side of the formation, presumably to help against Mathis.

4) The didn't wind up blitzing; the defense played Cover 1 with Freeman playing an underneath zone, both spying the QB (who had run successfully earlier in the game) and watching for short passes. This is smart because it was 4th and 11, and while the Chiefs didn't have any timeouts left, they were at the Colts 45, with two minutes on the clock, trailing only by 1 point. The middle of the field was still in play. Freeman was trying to take the middle of the field away.

5) After rewatching the play a few times just now, Gordy's coverage didn't really force the throw to the sideline, so you're right, a better throw might have gotten him. What Gordy showed, however, was the ability to catch up and defend the pass, so it's not a given that a better throw would have been completed. Gordy still would have had a chance to break it up, or push Bowe out of bounds.

Anyways, I think the coverage single on the outside, with the corners playing inside technique and trying to keep the receivers to the outside, where they could use the sideline as an extra defender. Lynch stayed over the middle, not committing to either outside receiver. Again, I think the defense was meant to take away the middle of the field, leaving the corners singled up on the outside.

i disagree. A cb could give up plenty of catches and be doing a good job depending on calls and down and distance.

Meaningless stats

No stat is conclusive. Judging the quality of a stat on whether it determines things it's not meant to determine is a fallacy.

But you carry right on.

    • I’m well aware of when the Mahomes quote I gave you was from.   And of course they’re related.     Mahomes said the quote back in February and he said it AGAIN when the incident happened.  That’s the point.   Mahomes revealed his feelings about Butker in February and he revealed them again when the incident happened.
    • Respectfully.   Unless the title of this thread disappeared the THREAD  is about “Shocking”     Girls are hearing a one sided message from the feminists ….. their whole life   MANY MANY MANY times   this man offered a different opinion.  And is attacked He didn’t slam the girls that chose a career he encouraged the ones that wanted to be a homemaker at least part of their life    Because he has successful females in his family it doesn’t make him a hypocrite or wrong   My wife made a boatload of $$ before she became a mother   She is very happy with her choice     just like some of these women will be   and there ISNT anything wrong with that choice or anyone else’s choice what they make
    • Rick Mears or maybe Al Unser Jr when it really mattered. I have no idea who is even in it now days. . I didn't miss a race from 1991-2004, partied all weekend from Friday-Monday, stayed at my friends house that had a house behind the track every year. Ate barbecue, drink loads of beer, walked up and down Georgetown. Then things started to change, race wasn't the same, people were different; police got stricter, and they would just arrest people over nonsense, women used to even flash back in the 90's and it was left alone because that was our Mardi Gras. 1 time a year, a buddy of mine got arrested the last race I went too for a silly PI because he was stumbling around like 100's of others were, when I told police my group will just get him home, cop threaten to arrest me, at that point we had a stare down and I walked away. That was my of saying goodbye. Now I am at home, avoid the crowds and could give 2 craps about racing. Been like that since 2004. I remember when Mears won in 1991, he became the Joe Montana of racing. I was there.
    • By the way, I already put all my chips in the middle of the table when I put $200 on Indy to beat NY in Game 7. I walked away a winner and have stayed away from this series.
