An option at safety (assuming we don't draft one)

Recommended Posts

Could we perhaps make a trade for Eric Reid from the 49ers?

Before you call me insane ( my mother had me tested-TBBT reference) let me explain.

The fact that the 49ers drafted Jimmie Ward last night was a very weird for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, last year they spent a 1st on no other than Eric Reid (another safety.)

Secondly they signed a fan favorite here in Indy in Antoine Bethea. And it wasn't a "1 year prove deal"- it was for 4 years- so it would be weird to spend a 1st on a safety who was riding the bench for 4 years.

Also for those who argue Ward will be used at CB, well they already have Chris Culliver, Tramaine Brock and Parrish Cox at the position ( also signing Chris Cook.)

How does this relate to Reid you might ask? Well if they want to start Ward over Reid, then it is possible this may make Reid trade expendable. If that is the case, then (assuming we don't draft a safety by going BPA) I could see Grigson on the phone will a couple of offers.

Okay- now you may call me crazy but it is something to consider.

No. The reason they drafted Ward is because Reid will probably be the SS and Ward will be the FS. It was a pick for the future. They wanted to re-create what they had with Goldson and Whitner, or moreso what the Seahawks have. Now they'll have 2 young safeties who will be the cornerstone of the back end of their defense. Bethea is just filler.

Do you think they gave up on Eric Reid or something?  I've heard he did fine except that his tackling was a little suspect.

I agree with you, it is weird that they spent a first on a safety after having spent a first on one last year and giving Bethea as much money as they did.

They sure gave him a lot of money to be a filler.

6.25 M guaranteed with 5.25 APY.

If they were actually considering trading Reid, I'd be all for the Colts trading for him. He played really well last year, and actually made the pro bowl so it would be crazy to me if they did trade him. But Id give them our 2015 1st since he could easily be our FS of the future.

Is that veteran minimum though?

Umm no.  The Vet Min for Bethea is $855,000

His contract has him averaging 5,250,000 per year.

Plus the Vet min doesn't require any guaranteed money.  Bethea got 6,250,000 guaranteed.

He just got paid way too much to be just a fill in.

Stanley Jean Baptise is listed as a CB, but he has the size, speed and cover skills to be an excellent FS. With the safeties going off the board early, he may be a good draft option.

He also doesn't tackle well.

Wait till round 3 and get a safety like Dion Bailey or wait till rounds 5 to get someone like Kenny Ladler or Dontae Johnson.

Bolster your pass rush to help out your secondary first, there will be a ripple effect, IMO. If safeties are still not available, bolster your press coverage abilities so that safeties can play closer to the box more since box safeties are easier to find in the draft than centerfielders.

I've wondered a lot about McGill for FS, but at this point we'd have to trade way way up.

There's still a few options left.  I threw Desir out there as a possible transition to safety because he runs in the 4.5 range

which I feeel is not so fast for a press man coverage corner.  Of course you still have guys like Dion Bailey left on the board

along with some of the other names we've talked about on the board for a while.

Marqueston Huff, Dontae Johnson, Brock Vereen, and Kenny Ladler are still on the board. One of those guys would be my first choice, but guys like Jonathan Dowling, Dion Bailey, Craig Loston are still left as well. We'll be able to get somebody in the 5th. but I hope we trade into the 4th.

    • Oh contrare, I’d say it says more about Shane Steichen’s skill set as a coach.
    • Excerpt from an article at NFL.com …     ”… One player the Colts can lean on while Richardson gets his sea legs: running back Jonathan Taylor. After last year's hold-in and injury issues, the star running back looks back to his old self. JT bursts through the line like a Mustang on fire, leaving linebackers in his wake. On Sunday, Taylor totaled 12 carries for 103 yards and +55 rushing yards over expected, his most RYOE in a game since Week 15 of 2021. He also forced five missed tackles across 14 touches.    Shane Steichen's decision to bench the star back during the entire fourth quarter because the Colts were in pass mode belies credibility. Even if Taylor isn't a prolific pass catcher out of the backfield, sitting your best offensive weapon for an entire quarter is folly -- hopefully one Steichen doesn't repeat. If defenses are going to sit back to slow Richardson's deep attack, Taylor should gobble up chunk gains.    At this point, Taylor is the most consistent thing going for Indy. The 25-year-old back owns a game-changing gear and can shoulder a massive load. His presence and production should help settle Richardson down during the roller-coaster dips. Taylor hasn't looked fully healthy in a couple of years. He did this past Sunday. The Colts need to ride that stallion.”     The above referenced article kind of echoes my feelings on the matter.
    • Exactly I am confused with that comment by Shane unless that one drop deserved him to be benched. Again coaches know what's the best.
    • I'm not sure why the team thinks JT can't be effective in the passing game.
