27.5 guaranteed is a monster deal but I guess there's not a whole lot of point back loading a 4 year deal for a 25 year old player.

Not really. Their team is relatively cheap in terms of contracts. They are mostly made up of low round draft picks who blew up in their system. I'm pretty sure they will do another great job of bringing in a fresh batch of talent. I wouldnt be surprised if they traded out of round 1.

The Seahawks are in better shape with the cap than most think.  They are nearly $15M under the cap right now and even with extensions to Thomas and Sherman should still be able to roll quite a bit of that into next year's cap.  And with the salary cap expected to rise above $150M in 2016 there has probably never been a better time to lock up young elite talent. 

 

Like all teams they will have some tough cap decisions to make, but they will have a young, talented core under contract to continue to build around for the next few years.

This offseason, they've already lost Golden Tate, Walter Thurmond, and Giacomini.  This is simply the nature of the salary cap.  You can't keep all the great talent you have because you can't afford it.  Guys who have proven themselves in your system will have to be replaced by rookies who aren't a sure thing.  They're bound to lose some good talent.  They have a lot of contracts expiring in 2015 and 2016

Don't get me wrong, Sherman and Thomas are great players, but they are benefitting from the dominance of the front 7. With big contracts being handed out, I just don't see how they will maintain success for the long haul. It's great to have star players on the team, but with the big contracts, less money can be spent to add quality players around them

I had a long response but it got erased somehow. Bottom line, those guys are expendable. They still have a bunch of depth at those positions save for DB but they have a bunch of picks too so it's no biggie. Their Indispensable players have already been identified and will be paid accordingly.

You never know with rookies.  You might let Lynch go, but you won't be able to find an RB with his running style and his abilities.  Looking at just their linebackers, KJ Wright and Malcolm Smith both have contracts that expire in 2015.  Bobby Wagner expires in 2016.  Furthermore, Cliff Avril expires next year, as does former first round pick James Carpenter.  All of these guys will want to be paid and it's not likely for Seattle to be able to replace all that talent using the draft.  In the end, they will have to let some good talent go

Those are exactly the type of players a team shouldn't overspend to keep if they want to remain competitive during the salary cap era. Teams don't get into cap problems because they pay fair market value to keep elite talent like Earl Thomas, they get into trouble by overpaying for relatively replaceable players. The Seahawks didn't even make an offer to Giacomini or Thurmond because they believe they already have young players on the roster who can replace them and lowballed Tate because this is a WR rich draft.

I see no information that indicates that Sherman has received a contract extension yet.  Although there is information that they are working on it.

I agree that they were smart to let those guys go, but they have plenty of other talented players with contracts that will expire in a year or two.
