Thomas DeCoud

DeCloud didnt play great this year but no one in the secondary for Atl did. Granted they did play with two top rookie cb's in Trufant and Alford and they really struggled. I like DeCoud, I think Atl saved around $3mil by cutting him and they have ALOT of holes to fill on Def.

He had an excellent 2012 season.

A few things about this.

  • If the Colts wanted more of a cover safety to pair with more of a run stopping safety they would not have signed Landry to pair with Bethea.  Bethea has never been a coverage safety.
  • Decouds play dropped significantly in 2013, some say it is because of poor corner play.  Many fans think bethea's play dropped in 2013 yet it's blamed on "losing a step" rather than poor corner play.
  • Why do so many people think that just because someone is a free agent they are automatically better than their counterpart on the Colts roster?

Didn't you know that the status quo is overrated?  Obviously every FA is better than our current ensemble or they wouldn't be free agents.  Kinda like Tebow.  The colts should soooo go after him because Luck, clearly isn't going to be any good.  Same thing with our coaching staff.  I mean heck Monty Kiffin is "looking for work" he'd obviously be an upgrade over Manusky, and our "joke" of a HC.  Heck, we should just have our owner sell to that shrewd and amazing business owner Jerry Jones.  I mean look at what he's done with the Cowboys.

Its hard being a colts fan somedays

Great post.  Really love your second two points.  Your first point is particularly insightful, but maybe not accurate.  There is every possibility that Landry was signed a year in advance knowing full well he would be paired with a coverage safety once Bethea's contract expired.  In fact, we know that a ballhawking playmaker is exactly what looks best in Pagano's system, especially when he is a future HOFer.  There is no way that isn't what Pagano wants.

That is a good point about Landry being Bethea's replacement.  I, personally, don't think that is the case but it is a valid point and worth considering.

I would rather have Bethea, Decoud is one of the worst tacklers and he's average in coverage. I don't think either will be on the team but Bethea is at least great at tackling, Decoud isn't good at anything.

I'm not disagreeing with you totally here but as far as coverage Bethea and Landry make Decoud look like R. Sherman. I love Bethea and Landry but the two together give up a lot of big plays against the pass. But yeah, they both can bring the wood especially Landy.

If we let Bethea walk because of age/money then I wouldn't mind signing Decoud for a couple years on the cheap and draft a safety in the second round. I hate seattle since they beat the crap outta Peyton's team but I would love a big fast safety somebody with the body of kam chancellor and coverage ability of earl Thomas

    • I agree.  I don't think they'll do it.  It leaves them greater options.  They can still sign him to an extension before the season is out.  They can let him test free agency.  Or they can walk away from him, depending on how things work with Latu.  Or keep him if Tyquan or Dayo get injured (again).  It's just more options.  I don't think they'll do it today.
    • The only problem with that approach is going into FA his price will be higher.   Extend him now for cheaper
    • Im not certain if there will even be any room for Pierce bc the 4th and 5th receivers need to have special teams ability. I think AD will show enough to gain the Colts confidence. You know Dulin will be there. So from there you're competing with Gould and whoever else. You know Gould plays special teams.  Going to be interesting what they have in mind.
    • Latu's addition also tells me that Gus is not doggedly adhering to his historical "Cover-3 Leo" defense.  Latu is not a Leo.  He's not the undersized wide-9 OLB type playing in a 4-3.  He's a bona fide 4-3 DE.  I'm expecting Gus to even further move away from his historical base defense.  (I never believed that he was going to cling to it come h3ll or high water.  That his coverages last year were simplified perforce, due to the inexperience of the guys he had on the field.)  I'm excited to see what we look like defensively with the new guys inserted.
    • It's about who else is Free Agents vs cap space, propensity to pay our own, can we find better 2-way(run-pass) production for less, is it worth a gamble? Fact that we have the top defensive player on our board from the draft under cheap contract, makes it easier to offset funds. Like I said we can almost have 4 DEs with the funds paid to Bosa by himself. The fact that all I hear from the Colts is glowing reviews about him.   In my opinion the Colts brought Latu in to start opposite of Paye, in the long term. Ebukam will be 31 when he's due for a new contract in 2026.     Just because we exercise the option, doesn't mean we can't work on an extension if his trajectory shows continued growth.     Good thing is we will know in a few hours.
