It'll be interesting to see if Boyett makes it on the active roster anytime this year.....    Most thought Chapman would at some point last year -- and, of course, he didn't.

Same could happen to Boyett.

Still...   I'm hoping he gets in around the bye week....  feels like the right time....

Either way,  he remains one of my favorite 2013 draft picks.    Glad we took him.

All are next on the way out imo. The path to 53 has officially begun.

Does Brazil count against the final 53?  I didn't think so.  I have Reed staying and K. Williams being cut.

Not sure. But I think K Willy makes it unless Pagano gives Reed the inside lane since he played in Baltimore with Pagano. Other than that, I don't think K Willy has done anything to say he needs to be cut. And with our running backs injury issues (aside from Ballard), K Willy could be a good insurance policy

I like this style from Grigson.  Sign guys with high talent, but currently are injured, give them a year off to rehab, and try them next year.  Some may view it as a waste of a pick, but the reality is, most of your 5th and below rounders never contribute in season 1.  By doing this, you are more or less grabbing players that you can red shirt and hope that their talent shines when they are healthy.  It's a good strategy, IMO.

Hope this works out well for Boyett.

He's essentially on PUP; the rules are the same, I believe. There might be an exception in Boyett's case that keeps him off of the preseason 75 man roster, which would mean we gain a roster spot. So it is a lot like Chapman last year. And Boyett would have until Week 8 to be ready to play.

I don't know how far along Boyett is in comparison with Chapman last year, but he's certainly eligible to return. This management and coaching staff seems very willing to err on the side of caution when it comes to bringing players back from injury, especially young players. That's how they approached Chapman, saying that they just wanted to be careful with him. That's very defensible. And as has been stated, this is a low draft pick that you ordinarily wouldn't get a whole lot of production out of in Year 1 anyways, so it's not like we're compromising the quality of the roster by being careful.

So, as great as it would be if Boyett is actually able to play in any capacity this season, I would bet against him actually playing. I figure he'll be placed on IR by midseason, he'll continue to rehab and work on his body (he had several injuries, and the more time he spends in therapy, the better; he should wind up stronger than he was before he got hurt), and he'll have a clean bill of health by the time camp opens next year.

That's a good explanation:

McNary’s exemption is under the reserve/military rules where the player reported after June 1, 2013 and has not played in any preseason games. He has missed all three preseason games with a hamstring injury. McNary was serving in the Army and did not report to the Colts until July 29.

Yea.. mine too. Also I didn't realize that teams can take a player off this "injured list" at anytime. I thought was the same as IR.

I got to 19 cuts pretty easily, it's tough for me to come up with the other 3.

My 53, without naming names:

QB 2, RB 3, FB 1, WR 5, TE 4, OL 10 = 25

DL 8, LB 8, CB 5, S 4 = 25

ST 3

Any particular reason you're keeping four tight ends? I don't think our 4th is worthy of a roster spot, and I only expect us to keep him if Allen and Fleener still aren't ready to play. Just curious what your reasoning is...

Wide Receivers (9 / 5): LaVon Brazill, Darrius Heyward-Bey, T.Y. Hilton, Jeremy Kelley, David Reed, Jabin Sambrano, Lanear Sampson, Reggie Wayne, Griff Whalen

Tight Ends (4 / 3): Dwayne Allen, Justice Cunningham, Coby Fleener, Dominique Jones

Offensive Line (14 / 10): Thomas Austin, Anthony Castonzo, Gosder Cherilus, Emmett Cleary, Khaled Holmes, Ben Ijalana, Jeff Linkenbach, Mike McGlynn, Joe Reitz, Samson Satele, Bradley Sowell, Donald Thomas, Hugh Thornton, Lee Ziemba

Defensive Line (10 / 7): Josh Chapman, Ricky Jean Francois, Aubrayo Franklin, Lawrence Guy, Montori Hughes, Ricardo Mathews, Fili Moala, Drake Nevis, Cory Redding, Martin Tevaseu

Linebackers (12 / 9): Daniel Adongo, Pat Angerer, Kavell Conner, Jerrell Freeman, Mario Harvey, Shawn Loiseau, Robert Mathis, Caesar Rayford, Kelvin Sheppard, Monte Simmons, Erik Walden, Bjoern Werner

Cornerbacks (8 / 5): Darius Butler, Vontae Davis, Josh Gordy, Marshay Green, Sheldon Price, Daxton Swanson, Greg Toler, Cassius Vaughn

Safeties (6 / 4): Larry Asante, Antoine Bethea, Sergio Brown, Delano Howell, LaRon Landry, Joe Lefeged

Brazill is retained, but doesn't count against the final 53 man roster because of his suspension. I kept David Reed because I figure he's going to be a return option, taking Cassius Vaughn out of the rotation.

The toughest spots were defensive line and linebacker. I think all of our defensive linemen have played well enough to earn a spot, except Moala, who hasn't played. But I think we'll only keep 7. Some tough cuts here, as I like Mathews and I think Tevaseu would make decent depth at nose tackle. But Guy and Nevis have been better. I also think Loiseau has played well.

That's exactly why.  Both Allen and Fleener have had issues in the preseason.  I know they're minor and mostly precautionary, but I think a backup for each would be needed.

I do agree with your assessment, I'd rather have better back ups.  I won't be surprised if we pull someone off waivers.

You may be absolutely right.   I look at it the other way - has KW shown us anything that says we need to keep him?  Especially as the 4th back, when we're already carrying a FB?  If he's our KRer, then yes.

My logic is that we haven't really seen anyone show up as the 5th WR.  Reed can do that and return.

It's fun to speculate, I could be way off base.

It's a good sign when you're cuting guys that will be picked up pretty fast by others.  Guy and Mathews have played pretty well but we're actually deep at D Line.

I think either Cleary or Ijalana will make the team.  Cunningham and Reed, too.

Maybe Green has a shot?

My 22: (cuts which i think are a tough decison in bold)

Harnish, Hughes, Kelley, Reed, Sampson, Sambrano, Jones, Mcglynn, Austin, Cleary, Ziemba, Tevasue, Guy, Moala, Adongo, Simmons, Loiseue, Gordy, Swanson, Price, Brown, Lefeged

That leaves 2 QB, 4 Rb, 1 FB, 5 WR, 3 TE, 10 OL     7 DL, 9 LB, 5 CB, 4 S        3 ST

Ziemba, Loisoeiu and Price have impressed me and i like Lefeged but Asante and Howell have played better imo.

Yea those DL cuts are tough this year.

I would like Ijalana to make it but he simply hasn't played in the preseason, I just can't find a spot for Cleary the backup OL I have are Link, Reitz, Holmes, and McGlynn. I'm probably in the minority but I like Dominique Jones more than Cunningham.

Every year since he has been here Ricardo Mathews has been on the cut list. This might be the season he gets cut but it seems like he is made of teflon. I like the list you put together it was just an observation on Mathews. We all must still keep in mind that all of this subject for changes depending on Griggs running across other players who he might think will work in the Colts system. It seems like he never stops working in that area.

He will probably be combing the cuts and making calls until the next roster cuts get us down to 53.  I doubt much sleep is in store for him over the next few days!

Well I couldn't do it...I couldn't get down to 53 lol....I think the guys I marked as strikethrough will be cut and the other 6 will be from the guys I put in Italics.   I think we'll keep either 8 or 9 on the DL.  During the one of the Baltimore preseason games, I believe against the Bucs, they showed a graphic of the roster breakdown for Baltimore as of opening day in 2012.  I believe they had either 8 or 9 DL on the roster.  I figure considering we run pretty much the same defense we'll probably keep similar numbers defensively.

I think it's pretty much a toss up between Ricardo Matthews and Lawrence Guy.  Guy is a better 5 tech imo but Matthews might be a better 3 tech.  I could see Moala getting cut based on his injury history but if they go by talent then I think he makes the team.

I'd say it's between Gordy and Green for the 5th CB spot and couldn't say who would have the edge at this point.  I think Gordy has probably been more consistent in coverage but Green adds the return aspect.  If they think he can continue to improve in coverage then I could see him overtaking Gordy.

    • But if the Colts sign someone next week or the week after then it really doesn’t matter.    I would’ve preferred we sign some two weeks ago.   Get them familiar with the DC and position coach.   But once we didn’t then it really doesn’t matter when.  It just matters that we do it before camp opens.  At least to me.    And the fact no one else is signing these top FA safeties tells me the market just isn’t there yet.   I’m preaching a healthy dose of patients.
    • How about getting a proven commodity in the FA market? I know that assumes the player wants to be here, but money talks and the Colts have some. This D needs a solid center fielder. Simmons fits that role perfectly. If he’s gettable, here’s to Ballard pulling the trigger, even if it’s a slight overpay. The team CANNOT leave this crucial position to players who have consistently underperformed in the past (Cross and Thomas).
    • All - this is the real question.   What do the 32 GMs in the league know that the rest of us (we're on the outside looking in) don't know?   Answer that question and you'll have what you need to analyze the choices made by the leadership of your favorite team.
    • We have the weak secondary where a player in FA can be signed for a year and get a starting job. We also have the money to afford any of them. Not too many other teams have that combination of both factors right now. Also, the draft recently happened and I'm guessing a lot of these teams want to try out their early round picks in the secondary right now. We didn't draft anyone in the secondary until the 5th round. We are somewhat desperate (not to mention Daniel Scott is out for the year again). Other teams are not at the moment.
    • Why do you think A and B are the only options?    What’s the reason for Ballard to be cheap?   What incentive would there be?    Posters like Superman and w87r have crunched the numbers.  The Colts are among the league leaders in spending.     Ballard’s is going into his 8th year.  He’s been competitive in 6 of the 8 seasons and I personally think season 1 was a tank.    Also…. Ballard always says the team is always looking to improve.  It’s now mid-June, so the Colts have 5 more weeks to sign someone before camp starts.  There are a number of FA safeties available.  Why aren’t the other 31 teams signing these players either.  They’re certainly good enough.  But it’s Ballard who is wrong or incompetent or cheap or something and not anyone else.
