(Analysis) Wayne will make HOF!

I was reading in another thread a debate on whether Wayne should be a hall of famer. Although I think he should be, let's leave it to the numbers. HOF voting not only is based on stats, it's based on pro bowls, superbowls, what the player meant to their team, did the player help revolutionize the game, was he a community servant. Now not saying a player has to be all these, just saying it raises the likelihood of making HOF. Let's look at the three main stats ans analyze them. Receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

1. Receptions.

Rank Player Rec Years Teams

1. Jerry Rice+ 1,549 1985-2004 3TM

2. Tony Gonzalez (36) 1,242 1997-2012 2TM

3. Marvin Harrison 1,102 1996-2008 clt

4. Cris Carter+ 1,101 1987-2002 3TM

5. Tim Brown 1,094 1988-2004 2TM

6. Terrell Owens 1,078 1996-2010 5TM

7. Isaac Bruce 1,024 1994-2009 2TM

8. Hines Ward 1,000 1998-2011 pit

9. Randy Moss (35) 982 1998-2012 5TM

10. Reggie Wayne (34) 968 2001-2012 clt

Now we can see Wayne is currently in the top ten in this category. We see 2 HOF in jerry rice and cris carter. Irvin who isn't on this list is in and Andre reed was a finalist this year. Wayne has 2 years left on his contract so let's analyze based on that, I personally think he will play longer. We could say Wayne will easily be in the top 7 with just 100 receptions. If he continues the chemistry with Luck, he could easily be top 3 with 2 100 reception seasons. Even of he plays 5 more years and averages just 40 receptions per year, he would still land in top 3 above Harrison. You could also say Gonzalez, Brown, ward, Harrison, Bruce, are locks for HOF. And with the inclusion of Irvin and his off the field issues, we could see moss and Owens also get in.

2. Yards

Rank Player Yds Years Teams 1. Jerry Rice+ 22,895 1985-2004 3TM

2. Terrell Owens 15,934 1996-2010 5TM

3. Randy Moss (35) 15,292 1998-2012 5TM

4. Isaac Bruce 15,208 1994-2009 2TM

5. Tim Brown 14,934 1988-2004 2TM

6. Marvin Harrison 14,580 1996-2008 clt

7. Tony Gonzalez (36) 14,268 1997-2012 2TM

8. James Lofton+ 14,004 1978-1993 5TM

9. Cris Carter+ 13,899 1987-2002 3TM

10. Henry Ellard 13,777 1983-1998 3TM Rank Player Yds Years Teams

11. Torry Holt 13,382 1999-2009 2TM

12. Andre Reed 13,198 1985-2000 2TM

13. Steve Largent+ 13,089 1976-1989 sea

14. Reggie Wayne (34) 13,063 2001-2012 cl

We see Wayne currently sitting at 14 with 13,063 yards. With two seasons left, we could see him in the top 5 passing Tim brown. With just 2 100 yards seasons, he would be sitting comfortably with 15,063 in 5th place. You see a lot of the same names which tells you Wayne sits amongst the career elite receivers in history. Quite an honor. And with the expanding chemistry with luck, I see Wayne accomplishing this feat.

3. Touchdowns

Rank Player TD Years Teams 1. Jerry Rice+ 197 1985-2004 3TM

2. Randy Moss (35) 156 1998-2012 5TM

3. Terrell Owens 153 1996-2010 5TM

4. Cris Carter+ 130 1987-2002 3TM

5. Marvin Harrison 128 1996-2008 clt

6. Tony Gonzalez (36) 103 1997-2012 2TM

7. Steve Largent+ 100 1976-1989 sea

8.Tim Brown 100 1988-2004 2TM

9. Don Hutson+ 99 1935-1945 gnb

10. Isaac Bruce 91 1994-2009 2TM

24. Wayne 78

Now Wayne sits at 24 currently but before you panic, 13 touchdowns puts him in the top 10. That's a feat he can accomplish over the next two years. Wayne maybe has lost a step with speed but if you look at the top of these lists, most guys are considered possession receivers. Rice. Carter. Bruce. Harrison. Ward. Gonzalez. These guys weren't considered burners. Having great hands allows receivers a longer life in the NFL.

Pro bowls

Rice 13

Gonzalez 13

Carter 11

Brown 9

Harrison 8

Moss 7

Wayne 6

Owens 6

Irvin 5

Bruce 4

Nowadays, it's harder for receivers to make it to the pro bowl just based on the amount of great receivers there are. 6 isn't bad for Wayne. It's above Irvin and Bruce. Irvin in. Bruce most likely.

Analysis. Wayne has a superbowl ring and he also has the advantage for playing with the same team and having the same quarterback and now one in luck he has great chemistry with. Many times players fall off late in their career because the switch teams. See rice in Oakland, Bruce in San Fran, moss with anybody past patriots, Owens after Philly, Brown with patriots.

As stats sit now. A receiver with 1,000 receptions, 14,000 yards, and 100 touchdowns has a great chance of making HOF.

Wayne also is a public servant, isn't a "diva", doesn't complain and comes to work ans does his job. Just because he isn't signing footballs after every touchdown doesn't mean he should be kept out.

Wayne, if he can play out his contract and maybe sign an additional 1-2 year deal, he will be:

Receptions: 3rd

Yards: top 5 (maybe top 3)

Touchdowns: top 10 (maybe peak at 6th)

Add a pro bowl and a ring,

who wouldn't let that guy in????

maybe we should focus Wayne's replacement to be a more possession receiver And not a burner. We get too fascinated with the fast guys while the possession guys are the hall of famers. Speed kills, but possession lives.

he can make it but wrs tend to be blackballed. guys like tim brown and andre reed are still waiting to get in. cris carter just got in this year after waiting 5 years.

I agree but once you see

he can make it but wrs tend to be blackballed. guys like tim brown and andre reed are still waiting to get in. cris carter just got in this year after waiting 5 years.

Reed and Carter had off the field issues much like Irvin.

After breaking in down the way you did, there is little doubt in my mind that he should get in. I believe he could reach all of those stats in the next 2 years, plus maybe an additional 1-2 year deal??? Hard to keep a guy like him out

I'm not saying he's a first ballot, but a player like him (elite without off the field issues) would make him a lock eventually. People like carter, Irvin, moss, reed, Owens had significant off the field issues. Voters Like role models.

Oh yeah he'll get in. Just a matter if when.

This.He def will get in but it could take up to 5 heck maybe even 10 years after he hangs his cleets up/is elligible. How sweet would it be if him and Harrison were both inducted in the same year? Just give them both a shared bust with both on the outside pre snap and name it "Manning's one two punch".

Some on this forum think he wont

Good list...good analysis.

As you say.....spot on....not first ballot.

Also with Reggie's personality, he may end up in the booth or on ESPN like Carter.....and as you say 'has not had' off field issues.  Reggie makes it....at one time I did not think it was possible....he has become the consummate professional IMO.

OK.....how about a straight arm to Revis just for me...... :colts:  :colts:  :colts:

Wow BronxColtNYC, clearly you did some heavy duty homework here. I agree with you 100% & I'm very impressed with the time it took to do this. I'm no stat guru at all, but Wayne is a STUD & he'd easily have my vote.

I would agree with that. Not a diva on the field or a trouble maker off the field. Comes in, stays quiet, and puts in work.

Hope he is in someday

Will Harrison get in?  He had the best 8 year span of any WR in NFL history -- but he has been involved in some crazy off-field things towards the end of his career and immediately after his career.

Numbers-wise, I say he should be a lock to make it- - but I wonder if his off-field troubles will effect him.

Im not one for wanting players who just retired into the hall of fame, I believe some of the older players that have been retired from the game for many many year should get in first, I mean Jerry Kramer former RG of the Green Bay Packers is 77 years old and has been a finalist 10.....yes that right....10 times, the guy was a huge part of 5 championships

Nice bit of trivia there, thank you. From his Wiki too... "He is a member of the NFL's 50th Anniversary All-Time team,[6] and the only member of that team not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame."

Is there a specific reason for this?
