Colts interested in OT Jake Long

Recommended Posts

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport adds the Colts to the list of the teams pursuing free agent LT Jake Long. According to rotoworld.com

im sure alot of the people on here are gonna say "no, he hasnt been himself lately and he'll ask for too much money...we need to take a cheaper route". its funny how people act towards free agents here cuz theyre just not use to it lol i hope we sign him and Vasquez both..wed instantly have one of the best lines in football

I don't mind paying for Long; however, the price does have to be right. I'm not saying we need to be dogmatic and set a 6 mil a year firm cap, but he would need to come at fair market value not his distorted FA perception. If he is 100% though, he could be scary. Imagine an O line with Castonzo, Vasquez, Shipley, Geoff Schwartz (2-3 mil a year), and Long. WOW would that be formidable...I would rather invest in one top guard, one stop gap guard, and a solid tackle than overpay for both Vasquez and Levitre.

I was one of those early on about Long, but over the last 2 months have came around on the idea. Sign Long, and Vasquez, move Castanzo to RT and we have a tough line as long as Long can stay healthy.

got that right...arguably the best if Long is 100%. And im a believer in Shipley i think he can do somethin at C one day.

lol you just like to argue dont you? i see you on here always arguing with people. Thomas is a good pass blocker maybe the best, but run blocking? not so much.

He's the best all around OT in the league. He's only given up 68 hits, hurries, and sacks since he's been in the league. His run blocking is still at an elite level.

When it comes down to it, pass blocking is more important than run blocking.

I have to agree with Dustin, another few years of production at the same level and Joe Thomas will be in the Hall of Fame. I doubt you will find any expert in the game who does not consider him the best Tackle in the league. I do agree Long is the better run-blocker, but even at his best he wasn't as good all-round as Joe Thomas is now.

That said, I would still like us to get Long, he'd suit a power-man scheme and could potentially get back to his best.

is pass blocking more important? was it more important when we couldnt even get 1 yard on the patriots in 4 tries? dont kid yourself. Pass blocking is where its at but without a run game your pass game will not be at its full potential. Im not trying to argue with you, i could give 2 %s about joe thomas. hes with the browns. Jake Long is a FA and the best LT available. there ya go sound better? dont get all butthurt n look up stats on me, chill.

According to what you want I guess, as Long is definitely the better run blocker. But overall there isn't much doubt the Joe Thomas is number one OT in football.

Absolutely right on that one Anton. Joe Thomas is the best OT in the NFL today. No argument there. Between him & Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, my Ama Mater is representing the league quite well actually.

Don't forget about the best defender in the game as well.

I don't want Long Castonzo is good enough at LT.  We need a RG and RT don't wanna overpay for Long who was average last year.

Catanzo would be better a RT IMO. I wasn't sure about it at first, but he's a much better run blocker than he is a pass blocker. I think he'd be much better on the right.

Castonzo would move to RT which honestly would be a better fit for him. And Longs been beat up lately so of course he hasnt been the same, hes healthy now tho from what i hear so i have no worries in the world.

The question is can Long stay healthy? I don't wanna spend a lot of money on a player that misses a lot of games due to injury.

well our guys that will be making the calls, ya kno Grigson Pagano and co are not a bunch of *s. im absolutely positive that he will not pay for a player that has question marks about his health, especially a guy that will be asking for the type of salary like Long will be. have faith

So if we get Long, & Vasquez what positions are we going to complain about next year? I've had so much fun making fun of our o-line I feel like I should thank them for all of the good times I've had (Thanks Dave Attell).

The issue with Long is not just the price per year....   it's also the number of years.

Long is not coming to Indy for 2-3 years and $8 Mill per.     If he's getting less per year,  he'll still want more years.   The Dolphins will offer him a deal.    We'd have to outbid Miami for him, and likely other teams as well.

Bottom line,  he'll want too much (total dollars, $ per year and signing bonus)  We can ask, and can kick the tires,  but I'd be more than stunned if Long to Miami happened.

I'm not completely sure Miami will offer him a deal. They don't think he really fits a ZBS that they switched to last yr. and they already have a good replacement on their roster. They could offer him something, but I don't think it will impress him at all.

Perhaps....  I'm only repeating what the NFL Network reporter based in Miami reported this morning.   The Dolphins would like him back, but only at the right price.   They won't bid high for him,  but there will be an offer if he lowers demands....

Whether that's true or not,  I don't know....

Could be, I just got the perception they were happy enough with Johnathon Martin that they won't worry about losing Long. Who knows though, were getting close to ZERO hour though and soon we'll be getting news.

This is some "Joan Waylon"-level rambling right here.

    • To me, AR looks bigger physically. At 21 he should make a huge impression on our rookies. AR looks huge!
    • As many times as Brady and company got caught cheating I don’t know how anyone can put him #1.  Especially a Colts fan. Just my two cents.
    • I’ve been dealing with sciatica issues for the last several months now. Started in late February randomly one day. In my lower back on the left side, and it goes down into my buttock and even down into my upper left leg some days. Some days it’s in my leg and not my back at all.  It’s entirely random. Some days I wake up and I feel alright. Even if I don’t do anything at all that day other than move around the house and take it easy, the next day I can wake up and I have to hunch my shoulders over and look down at my shoes to stand up straight with no pain. There have been days where I’ve been in terrible pain and had to do a ton of walking at work, and then the next day I actually feel pretty good. Some days when it’s in my leg I can use a heating pad under my left buttock and upper leg and it makes walking a little easier, and then some days I could set my backside on fire and every step is as painful as the last.    My point being, whatever it is he’s dealing with back there, if it’s anything like this, every day can be wildly different, and for no rhyme or reason. And this has been a thing with him since March. He was questionable down the stretch at the end of the season with this issue as well, which leads me to believe that it is indeed some kind of similar issue where it’s just luck of the draw how it bothers him day to day. Some days he’s not even questionable at all.    My doctor has told me to stretch and use heat or ice (ice has done nothing for any of it other than just make me cold,) and try to rest it as much as possible, but it’s looking this this may have to head to surgery. I go later this month to start figuring out those next steps. It’ll be telling to see if Haliburton participates in USA basketball this summer. Whatever his issue is isn’t bad enough to keep him off the court, but that could be time he’s going to have to devote to resting up or other treatment instead of going to France and taking part in the games to get fully healed up.    It’s almost like the shooting motion was bothering him last night. He's never been afraid to let them fly, even when he’s not hitting. But last night, even in a close late game, he wasn’t taking them. And the other guys weren’t even passing to him like they normally do. Once the ball left his hands at the top of the key it usually didn’t make its way back around to him. The only reason they wouldn’t get the ball into his hands more, especially late in a close game, would be because they knew he was dealing with something.    I absolutely believe he’s dealing with something because I’m living it myself. But carlisle needs to man up and use the hook in a situation like last night where he was inhibited instead of using him as a decoy. McConnell is good enough that we don’t need a decoy out there.
    • These are the Reception Perception charting numbers for Mitchell:     They also have him charted in the 83-85th percentile against man and against press coverage.    edit: I just realized you asked for Pierce. Sorry... don't have those numbers.    edit 2: found this on Pierce as a prospect:
