PFF Scores week 9

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to be posting any grades save maybe just a few on stand-out players.

I'll try to rank grades as follows:

  • Elite 90+
  • Great 80-89
  • Good 70-79
  • Above Average 65-69
  • Average 56-64
  • Below Average 50-55
  • Bad <50

For reference the baseline grade is 60.0 - the average. To make it easier for me I've made some PFF-grade intervals for each of the above categories (see above). Fewer grades under average because once you get into that area under "Below average" there's not much point in grading it - it's just not good enough.

Comments on grades for Offense, Defense and ST, week 9

Seeing as the cats out of the bag on week 1-3 grades (my bad), I'll keep them here and make comments on week 7.

Offense -  (week3/week2/week 1)

(55.2/74.7/53.1) - Overall Offense

  • Week 9 - Average - Pretty poor week for the offense. Bottem 3 of the season for the Colts.

(49.3/80.6/49.2) - Passing

  • Week 9 - Below Average. Another "meh" performance here.

(65.3/70.9/68.3) - Pass blocking

  • Week 9 - Average. Worst of the season and Nelson actually struggled this week, when Pass blocking is usually his strong point.

(62.3/63.2/57.1) - Reciever routes

  • Week 9 - Average. Despite the passing game not being noteworthy the receivers actually did okay.

(61.4/67.4/38.8) - Run game

  • Week 9 - Above Average. 3rd best performance of the season. Our guys ran hard despite Carolina focussing on our run game.

(45.4/82.9/62.3) - Run blocking

  • Week 9 - Bad. Worst performance of the season. We really need the run game to dominate when we have Minshew at QB.

Weak offensive performance this week.

Defense - (week3/week2/week 1)

(57.7/62.3/78.9) - Overall Defense

  • Week 9 - Great. Carried mainly by our excellent coverage this weak.

(43.1/74.4/83.4) - Run defense

  • Week 9 - Below Average. We're missing Grover. Miles Sanders and Young punished us on the ground.

(39.0/51.8/66.4) - Tackling

  • Week 9 - Bad. Back to the crappy tackling after a good week against the Saints. This seriously needs to improve.

(67.4/72.5/73.3) - Passrush

  • Week 9 - Good. Not as good as last week, but still good. Buckner had a good day and so did Ebukam despite not getting any sacks.

(62.1/50.0/66.2) - Coverage

  • Week 9 - Elite. All 3 corners had a good day today with Kenny of course having a career day.

Best defensive performance of the year!

Special Teams - (week3/week2/week 1)

(54.7/69.8/78.3) - Special Teams

  • Week 9 - Bad. Worst ST performance by far.

Below Average Pass blocking - Gave up 1 Hurry. No penalties. 45 total snaps (23 Rev, 3 Pblk, 1 Rblk,  18 Run).

Another "meh" performance from Minshew. Pretty poor performance from the Oline with only Raimann standing out in all areas. Kelly hard a good day Pass Blocking. Besides Pittman our WRs were no-shows - we need Downs back! Ogletree had a good game, but got an injured foot I believe. Cox and Granson didn't get it done. JT had a good day, but Carolina focussed on the run game and it showed.

SIDE NOTE. It's interesting we talk about our TEs getting a lot of blocking snaps, when they on a combined 84 totals snaps had 4 Pass blocking snaps - they just don't get used as targets in the passing game. I think that's a shame.

Bad run blocking on the Dline, but Buckner had a stand-out performance and both Johnson and Adebawore had sacks. Decent performance by the DEs. Leonard had a good day and Speed did as well overall, but Tackling was an issue for him. Olubi was just bad - 5 missed tackles! 3 stand-out CBs - what a joy! Blackmon had a good game. Thomas had another "meh" game.

Good Receiving, Good Hands - 5/5 targets caught for 22 yards, ADOT -2.8, YAC/REC 7.2, 0 contested targets, 1 missed tackles forced. Average Run blocking.

That can’t be I was told by several posters that Leonard didn’t played well yesterday lol.

Stand-out performances week 9:

  • Taylor - Above Average. Average Running, Good Hands - 18 carries for 47 yards, 42 yards after contact (YCO/A 2.33), 2 missed tackles forced. Good Receiving, Good Hands - 5/5 targets caught for 22 yards, ADOT -2.8, YAC/REC 7.2, 0 contested targets, 1 missed tackles forced. Average Run blocking.

Thanks for doing this as always. And I’m surprised some of the grades were that high. But happy to be surprised

Yeah, definitely happy to be surprised and wrong with some of the grades, especially Leonard. Now, if the tackling across the board was better, we would have shut down the Panthers even more. Baker, hope he can put together 2 to 3 games like this. Brents can't come back fast enough.

Is it CAR's scheme/receivers, or the Colts great Corner play?  Seems like the corner play is an outlier compared to most games.

Pass rushers were only Average.  Disappointing.

Raimann and Ogletree continue to play well, consistently.

I'd say the Panthers lack of talent is a big factor in our CBs being better than usual play.

Ebukam is actually having a really good year. He's just not a huge passrush threat and that's really what we need. He's kind of like Paye in that regard.

Raimann has been our most consistent Olineman.

I'd really like for our TEs to get more targets. I think with the few opportunities Ogletree has had he's proven he can be a threat in the passing game.

So I'm looking at the numbers and it brings up a question in my mind: are Raimainn's numbers so good because he

has a dedicated TE providing support on most passing plays?  I haven't replayed the game yet so I really don't know.

I can definitely see a need for it Freeland, but if they're chipping on Raimann's side on a majority of pass plays then that

really changes my opinion on his performance.

Jones is playing great this season. I usually think we overrate these late round corners a bit and Ballard can be too quick to give guys starting spots, but honestly I’d be okay rolling with Brent’s and Jones as starters the rest of the way once Brent’s is healthy. Even next year when Flowers is back, he needs to beat out Jaylon Jones for the CB2 spot in camp IMO.

The problem has been the Baker/Brown spot not Jones.  That’s why I said a trade wasn’t needed.  Baker/Brown are only playing due to injuries and one of those guys, Brents, is going to be back soon.  Jones has held his own on the other side.  Add in Flowers and Kenny (hoping the Colts keep him) and the Colts are pretty good at corner even if young.  They could probably use another guy for depth this off-season but this has been better than I expected at the start of the year.

With the secondary the issues have really been Baker, Brown, and the safeties. JuJu has looked great, and Jones has been solid too. This is why Bradley needs to stop being stubborn and let Cross play. I’m interested to see what he could do at FS.

No we need to invest in a high corner in the draft or FA. I am tired of resting on these late round picks even when they look decent. We can do better.

My guess is Freeland was getting that help.

I was at the game and witnessed Fries getting blown up, the eye test was real and concerning!

Kelly had his worse game of the year yesterday and Fries had Freeland on his other side.  Even Q’s game was off.  Not concerning at all for me.  Circumstances are different for every game.  On to the Pats.

Neither one has a dedicated tight end.  Every now and then they get help but for the most part they are on their own.  Which surprises me actually.

Can I introduce you to Julius Brent’s.   Once healthy, he’s the Colts CB1.    He went in the 2nd round.   As did Rock.   How quickly they forget.

@richard pallo is right. I wrote this note, but it easily gets lost in the grades:

Quote

SIDE NOTE. It's interesting we talk about our TEs getting a lot of blocking snaps, when they on a combined 84 totals snaps had 4 Pass blocking snaps - they just don't get used as targets in the passing game. I think that's a shame.

Our TEs only had 4 Pass blocking snaps combined. Our tackles are mostly on their own.

Yeah, I just copy/paste last weeks post and make adjustments, but it doesn't transfer the formating. It's a pain behind. haha

Pass rushers were only Average.  Disappointing.

Raimann and Ogletree continue to play well, consistently.

Jones has been pretty consistent, along with Moore.  It's Brents's replacement that has been bad the past few weeks (save vs. Carolina)

I was curious to see how they graded because I saw alot of the missed tackles by Olubi and thought he had a bad game but heard some podcasts that said he played great which I didn't agree with. To me it definitely looks like Leonard should be getting more playing time than Olubi.

I agree. Leonard was just better in every way and he only got about half of Olubi’s snaps.

I hope he gets more opportunities. I can’t imagine Ballard is happy about his $20m LB riding the bench on half the defensive snaps.

I think it was the two floaters Young threw to a wide open Kenny Moore lol.

The first one Kenny Moore breaks on and makes a nice play but the main deal was just a weak quail of a throw from lil Bryce giving Moore the chance to break on it.  Not a NFL level throw.  There’s a little pressure but he could have easily stepped to his left.  He doesn’t seem to show an ability to stick it in there Sunday.  Haven’t really watched Bryce but he made Minshew look like Dan Marino and Aroldis Chapmans love child.

The 2nd wasn’t really a play by Moore at all per se.  Lil Bryce just floats it weakly over the receiver into Kenny’s waiting arms and he runs straight into the EZ.

It was another strange game and I don’t know what to make of it.

We didn’t really need to play offense against them.  I wonder how the offense would have looked if it was needed.

I still am upset over trading RYS for Ngakoue for a 1 year rental. When you hit on a draft pick and you have the principle of paying your draft picks, I would have Ballard rather pay RYS over Leonard, if I am being honest. He was playing well even at the time of the trade. It was like a self-inflicted wound, much like missing out on pass rushers in Turay, Banogu etc. that set us back to draft more of those kind in Paye and Dayo.

More Ogletree and Mallory is what we have been asking for, in lieu of Pierce. I am not sure if Pierce is ever going to make that jump. Maybe Pierce could be used as red zone guy more to throw it up there for him to go get it, something he is good at, if we had another Z type of wideout outside. Right now, Pierce feels like just a decoy.

Thoughts on grades through week 9.

*** note, all team have 2 starters, so will use that as basis here.

Offense:

QBs - Minshew has been one of the worst graded QB's all year. Currently 4th worse, it is what it is

RBs - Taylor has passed Moss in touches and season grade as well. Great Combo clearly

WRs - Downs is having a good year, hopefully he gets back soon, Pittman just living in around the 1/2 way mark of all WRs, Pierce needs to step it up

TEs - Ogletree has been ranked in top 10 most of the year. Mo, has been hovering around top 20.

OTs - Raimann is the #9 highest rated OT, Smith #16, Freeland #64. So while most teams would just have (2) OTs ranked in top 64 ideally (2 starters), the Colts have 3, with 2 in the top 16.

OGs - had a rough week this week, all interior line did

OCs - see above, Kelly finally dropped from his #1 ranking, which he had all season. Still #3

Defense:

DEs - Ebukam has been playing good and very consistent all year, Paye has had 4 straight weeks of improvement, biggest surprise of the season is Lewis. So going to go back to this (64) figure as teams have (2) DE starters. Colts have (3) DEs ranked in top 51. Dayo has dropped a little lately, hopefully he can turn it back around.

LBs - Shaq needs more snaps, plain and simple.

CBs - Moore jumped into the top 10 for the season, Jones continues to develop. Brents needa to get back. Colts have (3) CBs in top 47. Nice to see Baker have a good game, got him out of that last ranked CB spot. Still 5th worst but small steps.

Ss - Blackmon is solid, Cross needs more reps

K - Gay is worth every dollar.

Yeah, I just copy/paste last weeks post and make adjustments, but it doesn't transfer the formating. It's a pain behind. haha

Crazy, took me almost 2 hours.

Probably should hop on the computer and do it but I just do it on my phone...:dunno:

I still am upset over trading RYS for Ngakoue for a 1 year rental. When you hit on a draft pick and you have the principle of paying your draft picks, I would have Ballard rather pay RYS over Leonard, if I am being honest. He was playing well even at the time of the trade. It was like a self-inflicted wound, much like missing out on pass rushers in Turay, Banogu etc. that set us back to draft more of those kind in Paye and Dayo.

Ya sin had an ok year last year but he doesn’t play much for Balt.  Mostly special teamer.

I get why they drafted RYS when they were doing a lot of T2 type concepts hoping he’d help with the run being a good wrestler and beating up receivers in press coverage with safety help in a mostly C2 based D.  He might have been decent there but for whatever reason he played off the line most of the time iirc. W

I also get why we traded him for Ngakoue.  We needed pass rush.  But the dude just isn’t very good.  Also we moved to C3 and Rock isn’t suited for press/Bail tech or able to run deep with speed guys off the los.

I don’t think much was gained or lost in the deal.
