Ohiocolt FA and mock draft 2.0 (post-combine)

Recommended Posts

Big shout out to @stitches in his Mock Off-season 2.0 (post-combine) post am using his similar stats/assumptions using sportrac’s free agency and contract numbers.

Starting Team Cap Space: $~86M

Own Free Agents:

Unrestriced FAs:

OC Josh Andrews 1 year 2M

LT Anthony Castonzo 1 year 13.5M

CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun 1 year 1M

WR Marcus Johnson 1 year 1M

WR Devin Funchess 1 year 3M – big drop from 10M he got last year but was injured.  Still 13M in 2 years averages out well on a one year prove it deal

Restricted FAs:

DT Trevon Coley 1 year 1M

Exclusive Rights FAs:

WR Daurice Fountain $525,000

S/CB Rolan Milligan $525,000

FAs Lost:

OT Le’Raven Clark

TE Eric Ebron

OG Joe Haeg

RB Jonathan Williams

S Clayton Geathers

K Adam Vinatieri

WR Dontrelle Inman

WR Chester Rodgers

Cuts:

DT Tyquan Lewis (1,190,742 in 2020 and 1,389,200 in 2021)

Total Spent on Own FAs: ~22.6M / Remaining Cap Space: ~63.4M

Other Team’s FA:

NT/LDT Javon Hargrave (Steelers) – command $15m+ Grover/Margus both played decent but do see Hargrave as an immediate upgrade on the weak-side.  Autry playing strong-side DT was by far our weakest DL position and the Colts should address early finding a 3T DL such as Madebuike.

RG Graham Glasgow – 2020 UFA 27 yo moved from C to RG this year and dominated at the position better than as a C.  PFF graded him 8th best among 28 qualifying guards.  Zero sacks 2019.  Offer $11m/yr.  Both Glowinski and Nelson making 5.4-5.9 mil/yr.   Teams last year targets our right side and especially overpowering Glowinski who underperformed.  SI expects Glasgow to make more than 10M/yr.  Offer something like Ali Marpet 4 yr(s) 2m signing bonus avg salary 11m/yr with 10.5m GTD at sign.

RDE Leonard Williams – Upgrade over Jabaal Sheard who is a FA.  Without much options in the upcoming draft might make sense to target Williams.  Williams is only 25 yo so expect something along 5 years starting around 9M

RT/LT Halapoulivaati Vaitai (Eagles) played well when called upon would offer $5m/yr.  Position backup upgrade.  Starter grade will get paid pivotal played both Ts.  Insurance policy.

RDT Tyeler Davison – With Tyquan Lewis injury history wouldn’t surprise to add depth behind Autry and cut Lewis taking the 1M+ cap hits next few years. Davison and Autry statics are similar but not overly impressive to remain starters.  Autry will be a FA in 2021 and is currently 29 yo while Davison is only 27.  Offer 3-year 3M/yr

Total spent of Other Team’s FAs: $43M / Remaining Cap Space: 20.4M

Total projected spent on NFL draftees: ~10M / Remaining Cap Space: ~10.4M

R2P39 WR Chase Claypool – Hilton should be gone in 2021 and Claypool will take over as #1

R2P44 SS Jeremy Chinn – jack of all trades DB

Final thoughts:

Many here will be disappointed that we didn’t address our QB concerns this year.  Since our QBs are still under future contracts will let them play it out and look at future options.  Brissett does get some new faces to work with this make or break year with Kmet, and some speedy WRs in Claypool and Watkins who should become the new faces of our franchise for many years.  Evans adds depth to our RBs along with adding skills as a KR specialist.  Colts TE room is still a mess with many up for contracts in 2021 but we do have capable starters this year.  Late round pick Degura will push for playing time and give us needed TE depth.  Doyle will help this year but will look at replacement options for him in 2021.

Our defense gets a much-added boost with FA Williams along with Turay in rotation who also made an impact last season.  Hargrave secures our future inside while we will look to the future on pending FAs Stewart and Hunt. In 2021 also expect Autry to walk but both additions of Madubuike and Davison will help improve our strong-side interior.  Chinn is so versatile that he can be used in many ways allowing Willis to remain at SS while making a difference as a hybrid DB if need be.

Next year we will obvious have to focus on QB, DB depth and MIKE.  Our offensive line is fairly set but will need to re-evaluate Castonzo and our active centers.  Lastly Sneed adds depth to our DB group but is projected better to help in the Slot which is good given Moore being injured last season as an insurance policy.

Forward thinking after 2021 upcoming future FAs / resigning’s we should be projected to have around 45M after moving on from our biggest cap counts of Brisset, Hilton, Castonzo and Houston.  In 2021 our focus will be on QB, LT, and MIKE.

Took a lot time to put this together but let me know your feelings.

Hold on now....am I understanding this correctly?

We drop 13 spots in Round 1... AND surrender a 4th Round pick.... for a late 2nd Round pick and the table scrap of getting back our 7th Round pick from the Dolphins?

Absolutely zero chance Ballard trades back that far. Do you not remember his presser about how they won’t move out of range of a premium player?

With the amount of upcoming 2021 FA and the different scenarios of staying at 13 and drafting different players it will be very difficult to address the many areas of need.  Luckily this year we have so many premium players available in Rounds 1 & 2 imo that we are in an ideal situation to trade back and load up in this draft.

Might not be as reliable as used to be so am open to using another trade chat.  Did seem a little off in terms of fairness.

There is no chance they don't do anything with the QB position.  Even IF they decide to give JB a another shot CB will have some sort of "plan B"; I don't think standing pat and just waiting for next year is a realistic option. Fans would be calling for Chad Kelly to start by mid-season.

Funchess won't take 3 million, he duped us into a 1 year 10 million he'll find another sucker in the 8-10 million range.

Those FA's are what we're use to getting, plan B- talent. The draft looks rough as well. If we trade that far down we get a #2, #4 and next years #2 as well. Hell, we traded down a few spots with the Redskins and got this years 2nd pick in the second round..

We traded back a “few spots”??

Try 20.   We moved from 26 to 46.

....No

First there aren’t “many areas of need”. There’s 3 big needs at QB, WR, and DT. TE and OT aren’t huge needs. But you forget that’s what FA is for. You don’t trade down a bunch in the draft so that you have enough capital to devote every pick to a need. You use FA and then draft BPA.

Don’t forget there’s a draft in 2021 also...

Kind of why I posted FA dates and already calculated resign or released and how much cap space we should have available if we didn’t select a QB this year.  Again am not high on a QB need this season.  Paying JB 20M so let him play.  Major focus was on DT and WR plus back filling needs at TE and SS.  Williams saw listed as Edge but more did see after my post he is actually more weak-side IDL.  Knew as I posted that folks won’t be happy without a replacement QB.  Am just not a big fan to pay someone 20M when we already are doing just that for JB and lose out on real needs vs wants.

Hilton’s age alone is of major concern with normal regression.  Other than DT major immediate needs imo ate WR and TE not QB.  Love to resign Houston next year but cost may be a major factor.  Everyone is entitled to their options.  Would like to see us trade back and draft more players.  Should still be able to get what was originally on our big board early.

My price for the #13 pick is Miami’s #18, their #56 and we flip flop 3rd round picks.... our #75 for their #70.

Or no deal.

I was thinking along the same lines as you.  I would hope for even something like this:

Colts give up R1-13 and R4-112 (1220)

Dolphins give up R1-18, R2-56, & R4-141 (1275.5)

Not that it matters cuz I can't see why Miami would do it as they have TONS of needs so why not keep as many picks in first 2 rounds as they can.

Good point... and I don't think they'll get cute with that #5 pick either... I'm betting they take Jordan Love there.

I think the Cowboys at #17 are a more likely trade partner if we do move down.
