Freeney And Mathis Where Are You

Neither Freeney or Mathis has registered a sack since week 5 against the chiefs. That’s over a month ago, and for that month they have been invisible on the field. There are a lot of player who aren’t playing up to par on this team and none stick out to more than these two. There only job is to get to the QB and both have failed to do so. Especially Freeney for the money he is getting to only play on passing downs. He has always been a one trick pony (meaning all he can do is pass rush) but to pay this much for what has become mediocre pass rusher is too much. For everyone out there who thinks he is a hall of famer, this season proves he is far from. Hall of famers are indivuals who are the greatest ever at their respected position and Freeney has proved he is far from that.

Although they have been playing badly and getting no sacks, they did have pretty good games today. Mathis made a couple of tackles for losses, like the 5 yard losses off the dump pass, and Freeney provided good pressure on a lot of plays.

It's namely because teams are running the ball on us more, which limits their sack totals. Obviously, teams can do this on us because they're not fighting to keep up with our score, like in years past.

What we need to do is force opponents into more obvious passing down situations. Once we do, we need to give our D-Line more time to get after the QB by getting good press coverage, stop stunting our D-Line, and achieve better coverage of short routes by playing more cover 1. If we can force the opposing QB to have to wind-up for a deep release, it buys our D-Line more time, so let's dare opposing QB's to throw deep on us!

..we got penetration from the tackles.and Mathis and Freeney were all over Rothlisberger..

Freeney still draws double teams on every down. It's hard to mount a pass rush when you get blown out on a weekly basis.

I have a question then, why do we make freeny do things that weren't what made him great in the first place? I remember for the past 6 or so years he was the best rusher in the league because he forced tackles to react to his moves... now I see him run around tackles pull here pull there what the heck are we doing taking him out of his element? If you want to change something call an extra rusher to fill the gap as he sweeps to the outside so that way he can make the chipper second guess and he can take the sack. The things we do on defense make completely no sense what so ever!!!!

Furthermore have you seen Jacksonville? They run a cover 2 oriented defense and they have so much more sucess than we have!!! Albeit that's not saying much but I'm positive we have better players than their group they are just not being utilized!!

First off there is no Charles Johnson on the indianapolis colts. It's Antonio Johnson and he has been playing the last three weeks if you have been watching. And the rookie's name name is Drake nevis who has been injured for some time..... So you are telling me that freeney and Mathis Success Depends on how our DT's play????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Maybe they're getting too old....I think I saw Freeny drinking ensure during the game...can't say about Mathis.

OR

It could be that they are too tired after being forced to be on the field 40-45 minutes a game because of our INEPT offense.

That combined with freeney being chipped by a TE, then getting by the tackle and having a RB help the tackle block is just asking way to much from freeney. Mathis getting chipped and then running into the tackle don't help him or freeney set up a move to get around. When freeney tried to spin on a play he had nothing to set it up with. There was no power into the tackle then spin to catch off balance. By chipping those two alot you stop their initial burst and making their counter moves hard to be effective when it doesn't catch the tackles off balance.

Freeney and Mathis get manned up often on their own accord. I have seen rookies man both of them up one on one and hold them down all game on more than one occasion. It happens to the best pass rushers. Add that to the fact that our secondary can't stop anyone, and all QBs have to do is a 3 step drop and throw a completion 80 percent of the time. Plus no one on our defense has commanded a double team on our defense while pass rushing other than Mathis and Freeney since Sanders.

Did anyone see Tommie Harris looking good today against GB? I saw him get at least one sack and he was in on several plays. Granted the NFL is ridiculously pass happy so the score was high, but both Harris and Hayden played good today. We look really dumb not keeping them around. Did we even try to renegotiate Hayden's contract or did Polian just cut him?

Our defense has serious DT/CB issues, but what's new? Outside of when we had Hayden, Jackson, Booger, and Simon, we have been at the bottom of the league at CB and DT for a long while. I'd say ever since Polian became top tyrant. What like 96 or so?

He still has a bit of work to do to reach the Hall of Fame. That's a tough position to get inducted.

There are 17 guys with more sacks who are not in yet including Kevin Greene, Chris Doleman, and Michael Strahan (#3-5 on official all time sack list) and Charles Haley, a 5 time champion.

I'm sure he will play himself in but he isn't there yet.

part of the problem is we have Brayton and Anderson playing ends on obvious run downs, but I heard somewhere that teams start to throw when those to are in since they aren't rushing specialist. Then when Frathis gets in on what seems to be obvius passing downs, they start running the ball instead. Since our CBs and LBs have a huge cusion theres plenty of room to run the ball if they get around either Mathis or Freeney. From this perspective it seems to obvius to figure out whom to pass/run on from the opponents point of view.

Right on the money. When their corners are playing 10 yards off, the quick slants and short routes are open all day long. No need to let a play develop and give Freeney and Mathis time to get to the QB.
