Stephen Holders 53 man roster prediction

I won't be shocked to see  us keep 4 RBs -- it seems like the coaches and FO were/have been really high on Ferguson.  He hasn't shown a whole lot (IMO) in pre-season -- but I tend to think he has a good shot at staying on this roster.  I also like Todman over Ridley (Ridley was cut by the Lions and I think he's probably lost a step and benefited from being on the Pats in a scheme where Belichek has excelled at making decent players look like good or very good players).  I think Todman brings much more to the table for STs and also (as Holder points out) give more diversity in our RB group (as Ridley is very similar to Turbin).

At WR -- I personally would like us to keep Hilton, Moncrief, Dorsett, Rogers and Smith.  Bray was a good returner for us last year (though I still don't see his 'take it to the house' threat), but I think he could be replaced by several guys on this roster who would do similarly.  I also think Bray is less of a threat at WR than Rogers or Smith and would rather not see a roster spot eaten up by a guy who is an above average (but not great) return specialist that likely wouldn't help much at WR if needed to be called upon.

I agree with Holder's assessment of the LB's -- it seems like the coaches/FO have been very high on McNary since he's come back from his military duty, so I won't be shocked to see him make it -- but do think Morrison and E Jackson have more upside as backup ILBs.

I pretty much agree with him everywhere else.

I have a few disagreements but it's overall good.

I think Bates makes it over Maggitt for now due to special team presence alone. I think McNary makes it over Edwin Jackson for the same reason. Jackson got way less snaps in the last two preseason games than he did in the first. McNary has been productive on defense and has been our best special teams player.

Some may say keep Mitchell over Brown but Mitchell has not shown us anything to prove he is better. He has been consistently injured. At least Jalil Brown had been a training camp standout when healthy in previous years. Mitchell needs to get healthy and play significant snaps on Thursday or he probably won't make the team.

Do it sounds like you're trading Bray for either Todman or Ferguson.  I can see keeping Todman who at least has shown something on ST's (not sure Ferguson is his equal or better there) and I don't think we say anything from any of the RB's since we've only had 109 or so yards rushing (minus the QBs). No matter what I hope they keep the better. immediate contributor of those particular guys.

I have to be honest, when inlooked at the list of name , at each position, that he kept on his roster, i really feel better about this team.

i'm not making light of our injuries at all. But seriously:

Qb: if #12 goes down, does it matter? I worry about Our depth here

rb: whether 4 or 5, interesting. If OL gives anything, this is a nice group

OL: when you see the list, looks very promising (ignoring injuries of course).

te:above average

wr: very interesting and promising group

dl: very exciting possibilities

lb: question mark in my eyes

safety: if healthy, i like group

cb: if healthy, this group could be special, imo.

k/p:. We're good.

My main concern is where we will find pass rush, but i trust our dcoord will have some wrinkles at least.  I gave a feeling the DL will get some pressures too.

Is it just me, or does this look like a promising and exciting mix, overall.  Of course, i'm ignoring injuries, but still.

I think if Mathis can give us anything at all it will help, especially if the D-Line gets healthy and can push the QB out of the pocket making it easier for our LB's.

However, you are understating the significance of the injuries we have. If everyone was healthy we would be a damned good football team.... but they arent and this is the NFL... injuries are part of the game and they will happen and continue to happen. You dont get any prizes for having the best starting lineup if they were all healthy... you actually have to go out and win games when people get injured....

Unlike the rest of the chicken little's I agree that this team could be very good, and I expect major improvements as the year goes on barring injury. Basing opinions on preseason is just ridiculous to me and preseason is meant to be nothing more than working on the basics and getting a good look at the bubble guys.

I will be interested to see how the O-line gels and who steps up for a pass rush or how we scheme to produce the pass rush, but I like the rest of the team if they're healthy. Our D-Line will be one of the best that the Colts have ever fielded and they will be fun to watch.

That would be my thinking -- I think Gore is a workhorse, and still has some in the tank to do that this year, though from the sounds of it Pagano is going to keep him on a 'pitch count'.  Ferguson, Turbin and Todman all bring different things to the table at RB and I could see all of them being used and positively contributing (with Ferguson and Todman contributing on STs as well as at RB).  I just don't see Bray doing anything to really contribute at WR, especially not compared to what Rogers and Smith can do there.  I like Bray, and think it's important to have a return man who is good (and doesn't fumble) -- Bray was good, maybe between good and very good, for most of last year -- but I don't see him being great (Devin Hester, Cribbs in his prime, etc...) -- to me, unless the return specialist is in that great/elite category where he is a threat to take it to the house every single time he's kicked to, to the point where teams have to game-plan around him (like Hester and Cribbs and Deion Sanders and other greats did), I don't know it's worth keeping a guy who is so one-faceted and doesn't seem to do much to contribute on other areas of STs or at WR/RB/DB/etc..

I agree with you, about wanting them to keep the one who will contribute most immediately.
