Colts claim Ameer Speed off waivers

I saw where NE had cut this guy, trying to sneak him through on waivers, and now the Colts have signed him.

...They waived wide receiver Amari Rodgers in a corresponding move.

New England drafted Speed in the sixth round out of Michigan State this spring, and he is the first rookie in the team’s Class of 2023 to be cut. The Patriots could have re-signed Speed to the practice squad if he had cleared waivers.

In five games, Speed has played 10 defensive snaps and 73 on special teams. He has two tackles on defense and one on special teams.

Funny thing is that the player we cut, Amari Rodgers, was the receiver who went in for Pierce last week when he got hurt.  And he was called up from the practice squad before the game.  Anyone else think Ballard might be trying to acquire a WR before the deadline?  Heck maybe he already has a deal in place.

We did just sign Juwann Winfree again yesterday, who I think (at this point) is the replacement for Rogers. Also points to Pierce not being too seriously injured. So, I would say, I'm not convinced Ballard has some eminent deal in place.

Didn’t see the signing.  Was it to the active roster or practice squad?  It really doesn’t matter I guess.  Neither one scares any defenses.  I don’t know if Ballard has a deal in place either.  But our backup wide receivers appear to be a revolving door.

Well the last guy with the name Speed worked out.  Why not.

I also think back several years, to the signing of Kenny Moore, who Ballard similarly scoffed up, when  Belichick tried to slip him through on waivers

Active roster I believe.

Rodgers I believe was signed to the 53 a couple weeks ago.

Yeah, our stacking of WRs on the active roster made me wonder if we wanted to start funneling some snaps away from Pierce.  See if someone else can get more production at that flanker spot…

He’s an athletic freak, 6-3 210 pounds and runs a 4.34 forty. His tape is very underwhelming tho, he doesn’t look very physical and lacks willingness to tackle. Has somewhat fluid movement from what I can see. Very Raw. Definitely a project player will likely see special team reps. Would’ve like Darius Rush back tho atleast he is familiar with the defensive scheme.

They just re-signed Winfree

I can't say much for the skills as he only became a starter when he transferred to MSU - but the size, speed and length measurements certainly add up.

Perhaps our Secondary Coaches see moldable clay in him?

I see what they are trying to build - would probably rather have Rush but they obviously cut him for a reason outside of physical abilities as they've had chances to sign him and have signed Darren Hall and Ameer Speed now instead.

Brents is 6'3"

Speed is 6'3"

Jones is 6'2"

Flowers is 6'1" (on IR)

Baker is 6'1"

Hall is 6'0" (On PS)

Brown is 6'0"

Moore is only 5'9" but his wingspan makes him like 6'6" if I recall correctly.............

They are definitely trying to get longer at corner and it seems trying to mx coverages more with press man and zone (mostly) with Jones and Brents on the edges.

I’m pretty sure I also read he was the sack leader coming out of college. If he can blitz and play man, then I’m happy.

"...three starts) at Georgia (2017-21) and compiled 25 tackles (18 solo) and one pass defensed."

Seems underwhelming to me.   Hopefully I'm wrong.  I was hoping Jones, the guy they cut Rush, would look better.   Maybe Jones just needs now time.

Is the term "project player" the kiss of death to that player's performance? It sure seems like it to me.

    • I will take a scene from Rocky 3. 80's and 90's were the best. After Homer gets destroyed by Tatum like Rocky did against Clubber, I walk in and tell Homer, you can't go out like that, we can win the title together like Apollo did. Homer would be like, I don't need this anymore, why you here? I would tell him, you can't pull it off without me because I am the best, you need better training. I am bored but great memories    .   Regarding the Rocky movies, fighters compared to real life fighters by Rolling Stone:   Apollo Creed = Ali Rocky = Rocky Marciano  Clubber = Mike Tyson Drago = Vitally klitchko
    • I would also say that part of the criteria for being put on the practice squad is: how much need is there for the Colts to have someone in that position on the practice squad?  If they have 10 O-linemen fully healthy, starters and backups, then there's little need for a backup swing tackle on the practice squad.  But if they have a rash of injuries, then the need is greater.
    • That's ok.  We can differ in our opinion. And - as an added bonus, we're not that far apart.  You're assessment they are "top 10" and my assessment that they are in the upper range of "average".  That would place them somewhere around 12 or so.  (Assuming average is the middle third of the league). Always good to trade ideas and opinions with you!
    • Honestly, you could probably place AR in both potential and concern depending on your angle. I think the Oline is better than average and at this point I think the Dline is a little overrated.    Our secondary is a big concern to me though.
