Mike Glennon to be released

Not surprising, since Trubisky is better. He's expensive and they probably think they can find a vet for cheaper.

Uh, not really? Trubisky is better than Glennon. Glennon was always meant to be a vet presence and backup while MT learned the game.

MG signed as FA before the draft

Yeah, I know. That doesn't really make a difference. He was signed to be a backup and the Bears got the guy they wanted in the draft(MT).

Yes it does no one truly knows what was promised

So you would go to a new job if you were told you would only be here until you replacement is ready

He told the people on the Cubs broadcast that he was the leader when signed

This isn't surprising at all, in my opinion.  They overpaid him insanely, then drafted a QB with a high draft pick.  This was inevitable

Agreed

what was shocking was that they signed him to the starteresque contract then draft MT

If they had interest in MT or one of the other QBs not sure why they signed MG to that contract

This thread could/should be part of a bigger thread following the off-season QB movement/activity.

Think about it a minute...this will likely be he craziest year in recent memory when it comes to QB changes throughout the league...

-4 first rounders in the draft (Rosen, Darnold, Mayfield, Allen)

-many QB's will be cut and/or FA's... Vike's QB's, Cousins, Brees?, Glennon, Osweiler,

-Teams with QB likely problems/dillemas - Cardinals, Broncos, Dolphins. Bills, Jets, Browns

-Possible trades - Foles, Vike's QB's

So the Bears are going to pay him 15 million to leave?  He had a 18.5 million guarantee.

14 million of that money was paid in the first year.  Their dead cap on him is only 4.5 million and they are saving 11.5 in cap space.

The contract he got communicated that he was the leader.  He got 15 million per year on average.  No one pays that for a backup.  Going rate for a backup is like 3 million for an average backup and maybe 5 million for a really good backup.

He was upset after they drafted Trubinski and I understand why.  He went into it thinking he was the guy.  Then he found out after he signed that he was a temporary placeholder.

Regardless he didn't play well enough to be the guy.

I agree and understand why he was released

They probably thought Glennon would play for most of the season while MT developed, like Goff. Glennon was worse than they expected an Trubisky wasn't terrible, so he was benched.

That is why the team is the way it is

If you feel that way you do not “waste” the cap space to sign someone to a team friendly contract and/or a veteran who understands he is a stop gap

I find the situation akin to a NCAA program recruiting over someone

It is similar to when the Eagles extended Bradford, giving him $36 million for 2 years. They would later go on to draft Wentz a month or so later.  (They also signed Chase Daniels that same off-season, IIRC.)

If we decide to trade Brisett he would be a great backup for Luck.  5 or 6 mil a year should do it.  I would feel more comfortable with Glennon than Brisett.

I highly doubt Ballard would trade Brissett after trading for him. Ballard's exact words were that Brissett was drafted for the future. What that means no one knows but I don't think he will traded this year no matter.

Till we see Luck on the field it would be IMO stupid for Ballard to trade him.

I just read that Glennon was paid $18.5mil to:

-start 4 games (1-3 record)

-completed 93 passes

-Threw 4TD's

-Threw 5 INT's

Wow... what a ROI for Da'Bears!! LOL

That is why you should push you kids to play football! ;)

I would feel much better about our QB situation with the veteran Glennon as the backup for Luck instead of a developmental QB like Brisett.  I would love a trade of Brisett to the Dolphins for Landry.  He could battle it out with Tannehill for the QB job and The Dolphins get the cap relief and we get an elite starting WR to go along with TY.  Makes sense to me.
