The Unexpected Pass Rush Dilemma

Recommended Posts

So far, we have picked up 2 potential starting OLBs in free agency in Mingo (if he gets it together) and Simon (who is an overlooked stud). We are also talking to Sheard, and assuming we bring him in, we have 3 starting-caliber pass rushers. If that's the case, do we still draft one in the first round? Even the second? Personally, I think we should pass on Sheard and grab a stud in the early draft to fight for a starting job, because if we do get Sheard, that leaves 4 starting-caliber players fighting over 2 spots. While it's not a bad problem to have, it takes up roster space and cap room. That's just my thought on it all, but I want to know what you guys would do in this situation!

Eric Walden is likely gone, mathis retired, I see Cole getting cut so that leaves us with ayers and Maggit at olb. Signing 2 guys (hopefully 3) isn't as bad as it sounds. It will make drafting BPA much easier now though and I would like to see a cb signed and I'm good with FA

Can't have enough pass rushers!! And currently, according to some fans on here, we may have 1 possible decent pass rusher in Simon (i say that cuz i don't know much about him)..mingo is a depth signing that the team probably HOPES can breakout..but he's shown no great signs in his yrs in the league..SHEARD COULD help, he's been solid and was in a limited/benched role in NE last year..i say sign him (cuz we need bodies at that position anyways) and still draft a OLB that's more known for their pass rush! Let him develop and possibly start by seasons end. Even if he doesn't start Colts rotate their OLB's quite often anyways! Everyone should get enough PT to show what they got!

Mingo is not a starting caliber OLB.  Could he be?  Unlikely but of course possible.  What these moves have done is make it so the team doesn't have to draft an OLB early, which is why they were smart.  Economically safe deals meant to protect you from reaching for a guy.

All that said, they should draft an OLB early if there is someone they see as a future difference maker, but they don't have to.

If we sign Sheard, then we can go after the BPA at one.  What I mean is that our draft board could change and we may list CBs or even a RB higher than we have them now.

Bottom line, when a team says BPA, they mean on their board.  But right now we don't know about Minho, so we only have one decent LB.  So I think we go after an edge rusher in draft.

None of them are really pass-rush specialists though. I would still want to get one or two edge guys in the draft.

Mingo could be, given his athleticism, but hasn't shown anything just yet. This is the kind of year you really need Mathis in camp with the young guys..

 LOL banking anything on Mingo.
And i would see Sheard & Simon as competing for the same job with the other as our backup rotational 3rd rusher.

We would still want a true Rush linebacker for our D.

I'd pretty much assume Mingo would have the same chance as an UDFA of making an impact. You hope for the best, but don't expect much.

There's really no other pure rush guys in FA, but there's quite a few in the draft. They just may take a bit to develop.

None of them could be considered more than rotational players, much less studs. I'm not saying it has to be an edge player in round one, but that's where we would go in a perfect world. I'm hoping they bring in an off-ball LB, NT, and CB in free agency as well. Some more supplemental players like John Simon that won't break the bank but help fill the holes; Kevin Minter, Johnathan Hankins, Morris Claiborne, etc.

If we get OLB set we could go DE with our 15th pick, Soloman Thomas for example if available of course.

I'd see Thomas as more of an OLB than DE in our scheme. He's not big enough to play on the line, but is about the same size as Justin Houston and super athletic, so rush OLB isn't out of the question for him.

We just signed Simon to a 3 year deal, but those other guys are ones on my list as well.

You can never have too many pass rushers.
