Colts to replace turf

Still not natural grass, but different turf.

Yeah LOS doesn’t have drainage to support an all grass turf and they don’t have the big open space or the stadium design to wheel it out like Arizona does.

 

Replacing the turf every few years is normal maintenance but glad it’s being done.

We’ll never be able to have real grass. Even if they opened the roof every day there still wouldn’t be enough total daily sunlight to grow a respectable field. And the field is below street level so as said above, there’s no bringing one in from outside.

The NFLPA’s J.C. Tretter wants a full ban on artificial turf fields. Realizing this won’t happen they have commented on the types. Noting that some types of A.T. are different than others there is a recommendation against slit film  turf. This is from April 2023. Yahoo sports. 
 

“Two years later, Tretter called for the immediate ban of "slit film turf," citing injury concerns. The Jets, New York Giants, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Coltsand Cincinnati Bengals all use slit film turf. “

There are three basic types of turf. 

Slit-film:  Flat turf blades created by adding slits to a thin sheet of plastic.

Monofilament fiber:  Dimensional turf blades that stand upright.

Dual Fiber: Slit-film and monofilament turf blades blended together.

 

Seems like the type of turf makes a difference. Anecdotally teams think that some injuries happen with out much if any contact and that it is linked first to A.T. over grass and then to the type of turf used. Will be interested in what gets installed.

Teenagers in Indiana have managed to grow weed in their bedroom closet for decades.....  we can't grow ACTUAL grass In a multi multi million dollar facility in 2023.

Interesting to see that the Titans have installed the fake stuff in their stadium this year. It's always been natural grass.

Maybe the Colts should pull a Boise st and make the whole field Colts blue or white!? Better yet, black and blue for the Indiana nights game!🤪

I don't think they can.  According to an article back in 2011, NFL owners meeting they encacted a rule, based on the Boise St. field color.

"At the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday it was announced that a new rule had been enacted that eliminates the possibility of blue turf.  NFL teams must have their field color approved by the league and it has to be a shade of green."

You can't have a natural grass field in a dome stadium - unless you live in Arizona or other state down south where you can grow grass naturally all year round.

 

Hopefully - the new turf will be the latest and greatest version of fake grass.

For the record, I've seen it posted a couple times.

 

When I said it's "still not natural grass", I wasn't inferring that it would be at some point.

 

Just that some won't be happy that it isn't, even if it can't be.

You actually can. European soccer/football stadiums, because of their roofing completely covering the stands, don't get adequate sunlight and they have been utilizing a type of 'sun lamp' that gives the grass the 'sunlight' it needs to flourish. I'm kinda surprised stadiums in the U.S. haven't used the same technology.

 

But the problem with Lucas Oil Stadium would be drainage from watering the grass, so we still wouldn't be able to use that technology.

Not all turf is created equal. There are newer designs that are safer. I hope the new turf better.
