What's the odds Luck un-retires?

TBH luck should just stay retired. He never seemed too invested in football anyways. Sorry that he had to go through injuries, and I don't know how he was in the locker room. But from afar, it was something about him that I just couldn't trust.

Put it this way, do you ever challenge or second guess the devotion of Peyton, Brady, or even Wilson? now add luck to this equation? Something is just different about the "all in" from luck, even when drafted.

Yep, he certainly had a broad and simultaneous range of interests...and from an outside view, didn't seem anywhere near having the blood-oath level of passion that Peyton and Brady had/have for football.

Now....there is nothing wrong with that....he's got the right to cash out of the game and into retirement as he did.

But it simply doesn't foster much trust that if he came back, he'd battle through injuries and be fully committed. :dunno:

I'm just a run of the mill fan who doesn't know all the "ins and outs" of the NFL.  Since he "retired" is he out of his contract?  Reason I ask is if he was healthy and wanted to play in the NFL again does he have to come back to the Colts?  Could he walk up to another  team in the off season and say "I want to be your quarterback." kind of like a walk on?

Just curious.

Nope....my understanding is that any return to the NFL for Luck has to go through the Colts.

I don't know if you happen to know the answer to this question, but whether or not he returns, can we trade away his rights?

Odds are that he will not return, so let's see if we can trade away his rights and get something, if that's at all possible.

Good question.... without seeing the agreement that he and the team came to, I'm not sure.... but dangling him in front of the likes of Daniel Snyder or Jon Gruden wouldn't be a bad idea.

I would however.... load any such deal with conditions in the event he DID come out of retirement. They can have his rights for a 2nd round pick.... and IF he comes out of retirement they add a 1st round pick and another 2nd.

To be totally honest. (Although a little comical). Luck seemed more thrilled about his book club than winning a Superbowl. Jmho. (duck)

I kind of thought that but wasn't sure.  Reason I asked is this past spring at training camp Mcafee was interviewing Ballard and made some comment about kicking again and Ballard said he wouldn't release him without a trade, but he was laughing so I couldn't tell if he was serious or not.

I disagree he loved the game injuries and playing on a trash team took that love and joy from him even if he had stayed his head and heart wouldn't have been all in so we wouldn't have been any better even with him than the bum we are all stuck with now.

If he does come back it wont be to play for us.

Luck loved the game but I don't think he was IN LOVE with the game.

I think most players in the NFL, playing in the NFL was all they ever really wanted to do with their lives.  I'm not entirely convinced that Luck loved football any more than he loved Architecture for example.  Honestly I think there is a good chance that he chose the NFL because it just flat out pays more.  Architecture is a good career but you don't make "Never have to work again" money in a year like you do from the NFL.

There are a few players like Luck or John Urchel that love football, but they have other things they want to do with their lives that don't involve football.  And I think these guys eventually come to the conclusion that football might wreak their chances of doing those other things with their lives and so they choose to leave it behind.

I would selfishly love to see Luck unretire because I love watching him play football and he would instantly make the Colts contenders again.

But I think Luck made up his mind.  He's got his money, he's got his family.

I think he is at peace with the decision and I wish him the best just stinks we couldn't have won a couple titles while we had him.

I think a very good chance he returns if injuries healed, if they lingered doubt he does. He always wanted a Super Bowl title and also mentioned how much he loved being in a team setting and his closeness to fellow players. Would i trust he wouldnt re retire ? Well think most eveveryone would have those doubts with the way he left.

Will he decide he wants to come back, TBD.

I'm surprised at how many people are saying things like "Luck didn't love football", "Luck doesn't miss the game" etc. I really just don't believe any of those things. The dude is not the loudest guy in the room, that we know, but that doesn't mean his passion for the game is any less. Noise and showmanship != passion. Those just weren't aspects of his personality.

Football has been an integral part of his entire life, professionally and personally. Luck grew up on football, he's formed countless relationships and it's weaved into the fabric of who he is. I would be absolutely shocked if some of his greatest memories weren't on the football field. The dude played his * off for this team and other teams time and time again. You don't do that, you don't get to the highest level of this game if you aren't passionate about it.

I feel as if fans aren't putting enough significance on the state of his mental health. It is a very very serious thing. It has the absolute power to strip everything that you love most from you. Above all else I really think that this was the biggest reason in his decision. Not that his love for the game changed or that his heart wasn't ever really in it in the first place.

Do I think Luck misses the game, his teammates, the competitiveness, and the sheer amount of mastery you need to play at that level? Absolutely, he probably wishes everyday that things went differently.

Do I think he has interests in life other than football? Yes, I definitely agree with posters who have stated this. However, I think that is the same for many great players (including #18). It's that drive that helps make them so good in the first place.

Do I hope he comes back? Yes, I would be ecstatic to find out Luck has returned. Not only for the great football player he is but because I honestly believe that if it occurred it would mean that he's gotten a handle on his mental health as a person.

The photo earlier in this thread shows a pumped up Luck.
It may not mean a thing but certainly worth noting.

I don't think there is any reason to believe that just because he stopped playing football he was going to just let himself go.  By now working out daily is probably 2nd nature to him that it would feel odd for him not to do it.

He also might be fully healthy and thinking about his own HOF career. Regret is a +, and to be that young and walk away might lead to a bunch of it. I can see if he had several head injuries or neck injuries, but he might be feeling good and thinking things through. The fact that the Colts didn't take back this years signing bonus tells you all you need to know about how he's thought of..

This all resets his point about "breaking a cycle". If the addiction (pain meds)/depression part of the story is accurate and it was/is so dire that a cycle involving that needed broken... there's no shot he comes back. Zero. This is speculation though. If it was just mental exhaustion/bordem from rehabbing injury which can manifest similar moods, but isn't the same as the addiction/depression dynamic that might be a bit different.

One day there's going to be a book. There's a story here and we don't really know it yet.

    • Wilson IMO is too much like Downs. Not sure we would want to pick another predominantly slot player.    IMO the players that make the most sense at WR are - AD Mitchell, Ladd(he again plays a bit of slot, but he's also a bit more versatile, he's played about 75% of his snaps in other alignments), Troy Franklin - he can be a Z for us... Jermaine Burton?!? if he's cleared character-wise?? I like Malik Washington but he's predominantly slot too so not sure he's a fit here.    BTW... this guy is projected as a day 3 pick... but because of the general lack of that type of player after Troy Franklin(fast Z) I can see him being pushed up... maybe get drafted mid-late R3 - he's like budget version of Xavier Worthy- Anthony Gould.    Maybe DeVontez Walker? Although he had such a bad Senior Bowl, I'd be surprised if Ballard goes for him.
    • While having 6 QBs go in the first 12 picks pushed some talent towards us... it probably also contributed to it being extremely hard for Ballard to trade up. It's just way too hard to make teams move away from QBs or to outbid teams who are bidding for their QB. I think 5 was probably our best chance for trade up... Arizona reportedly completely shut down any offers - they just wanted MHJ and they took him. 5 was probably our best chance, but it probably was way too steep of a price. Giants probably didn't want to move from Nabers, division rival Titans not great trade partner, Atlanta... wanted a freaking QB for some reason?!?!? Then Bears got their dream player drop to them and IMO that was probably the last chance we had.
    • I wouldn't mind if we traded up early if we picked one of these three players: 1. Texas A&M LB Edgerrin Cooper 2. Iowa CB Cooper DeJean 3. Texas WR Adonai Mitchell
    • Round 2/3 Wishlist 1. Texas A&M LB Edgerrin Cooper 2. Iowa CB Cooper DeJean 3. Texas WR Adonai Mitchell 4. Rutgers CB Max Melton 5. Michigan LB Junior Colson 6. Western Kentucky WR Malachi Corley 7. Minnesota S Tyler Nubin 8. Iowa State CB T.J. Tampa 9.Oregon WR Troy Franklin
    • Finally CB drafted a Edge with production, not only high RAS. But then it's a guy with big injury concerns. Anyway....any player can get a serious injury on any given play. So, welcome to Indy! Give everything you have on the field and stay healthy!   Gotta find a DB and WR in round 2. Think DeJean is still on the board?! Round 2 is probably where his value is.
